“The Book of Dress, Adornment and Manliness” is book 26 of Al-Kafi, the collection of ash-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Kulayni. It holds 553 hadiths — Hadith 12,094–12,143 in the standard numbering. Each is shown below in the original Arabic with an English translation, its full reference, and the grading the hadith scholars gave it where one was recorded. It is long enough that it is split across 12 pages so each one stays quick to load; the parts run in order and are linked at the foot of the page.
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’Allah is beautiful, He loves beauty and He loves to see the signs of bounty on His servant.”’
2. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from in a marfu‘ manner the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘If Allah grants a bounty to one of His servants and such bounty appears on him, he is called the friend of Allah who speaks of the bounty of Allah. If Allah grants a bounty to one of His servants but it does not appear on him, he is called the anger of Allah and denying the bounty of Allah.’”
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from ‘Uqbah ibn Muhammad from Salmah ibn Muhammad Bayya’ al-Qalanisiy who has said the following: “Once, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, passed by a man whose voice had become very loud on another person when demanding something very little from him. He (the Imam) asked, ‘How much do you demand from him?’ he replied, ‘So and so amount.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘Have you not heard the saying, ‘One who has no kindness has no religion?”’
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Asbat from the one who narrated to him who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When Allah grants a bounty to His servant He loves to see it on him; He is beautiful and loves beauty.’”
سَهْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ مِسْمَعِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَبْصَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) رَجُلًا شَعِثاً شَعْرُ رَأْسِهِ وَسِخَةً ثِيَابُهُ سَيِّئَةً حَالُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مِنَ الدِّينِ الْمُتْعَةُ وَ إِظْهَارُ النِّعْمَةِ .
5. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Shammun from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman from Misma‘ ibn ‘Abd al-Malik who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once saw a man with his hairs untidy, his clothes dirty and his condition very bad. The Messenger of Allah said, ‘It is of religion to enjoy and allow the bounty to show.’”
وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) بِئْسَ الْعَبْدُ الْقَاذُورَةُ .
6. Through the same chain of narrators as that of the previous Hadith the following is narrated: “He (the Imam )’ Alayhi al-Salam has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The worse servant is a dirty servant.’”
7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from certain persons of his people from Mu‘awiyah ibn Wahab who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once saw me carrying grass. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is undesirable for a man of dignity to carry lowly things, thus people become bold against him.’”
8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn Hadid from Murazim ibn Hakim from ‘Abd al-‘ A’la’ Mawla Ale Sam who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘People say you have a great wealth . 5 He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not affect me badly because ’Amir al-Mu’minin one day passed by different groups of Quraysh with a very old shirt on him and they said, ‘Ali has become very poor and has no assets . 5 ’Amir al-Mu 5 minin heard it. He then commanded the person in charge of charity to keep his share of dates, not to send to anyone but keep them. He (the Imam) then told him to sell to the first persons who wish to buy in exchange for dirham then place the dirhams as dates are placed, then hide them with dates so they are not seen. He then instructed the person in charge, “When I ask you for dates then climb on it, look at the asset and kick it with your foot as if you do not consider dirhams of any value and significance until they are scattered all over the place . 55 He (the Imam) then sent someone to call the people (who had called him very poor and without any assets). He (the Imam) then asked for dates. When he went to bring dates he kicked with his foot and dirhams scattered all over the place. They asked, ‘What is happening, O abu al-Hassan ? 5 He (the Imam) replied, ‘This is the assets of one who has become very poor and has no assets . 5 He (the Imam) then commanded to keep in mind the people to whom I have been sending dates. See how much were sent to each one then send that quantity to each one."
9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘I dislike to see a man who has received a bounty from Allah but does not show it."
10. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather, al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu 5 minin has said, ‘You must dress up for your Muslim brother just as you dress up before a stranger; the Muslim brother who likes to see him (his Muslim brother) in the best dress . 555
11. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Faddal all from Yunus ibn Ya’qub from abu Basir who has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu 5 minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was informed that Talhah and Zubayr say, ‘Ali has no assets . 5 He (the Imam) said, ‘It troubled him and he commanded his agents to collect his share of grains. They followed his instruction until the end of the year, then they brought it to him and it was worth one hundred thousand dirhams. It was spread before him. He sent for Talhah and Zubayr. When they came he told them, “This asset by Allah belongs to me and no one has any share in it . 55 They had proof to verify it and they left saying, “He in fact does have assets . 55 5 55
عَنْهُ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ وَ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ أُنَاساً بِالْمَدِينَةِ قَالُوا لَيْسَ لِلْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) مَالٌ فَبَعَثَ الْحَسَنُ ( عليه السلام ) إِلَى رَجُلٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَاسْتَقْرَضَ مِنْهُ أَلْفَ دِرْهَمٍ وَ أَرْسَلَ بِهَا إِلَى الْمُصَدِّقِ وَ قَالَ هَذِهِ صَدَقَةُ مَالِنَا فَقَالُوا مَا بَعَثَ الْحَسَنُ ( عليه السلام ) بِهَذِهِ مِنْ تِلْقَاءِ نَفْسِهِ إِلَّا وَ لَهُ مَالٌ .
12. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Faddal and ibn Mahbub from Yunus ibn Ya’qub from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that in al-Madinah people said, ‘Al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, has no assets . 5 Al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, sent to a man in al-Madinah, borrowed one thousand dirham from him and sent it to the charity collector saying, ‘It is the charity due on our assets . 5 People said, ‘Al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has not sent it without a reason. This is because of a certain amount of assets ."
13. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ali ibn Hadid from Murazim ibn Hakim from ‘ Abd al-‘A’la’ Mawla’Ale Sam who has said the following: “Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, lived in serious financial condition and people of al-Madinah began to speak about it. It came to his notice. He assigned one thousand dirham and sent it to the governor of al-Madinah saying, ‘It is the charity due on our assets.’”
14. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from abu Shu’ayb al-Mahamiliy from abu Hashim from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, loves beauty and beautification and dislikes misery and wretchedness.’”
15. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, from Muhammad ibn Aslam from Harun ibn Muslim from Burayd ibn Mu‘awiyah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to ‘Ubayd ibn Ziyad, ‘Showing the bounty is more beloved to Allah than its safekeeping. Therefore, you must live in your people with the best dress among them.’ He (the narrator) has said that ‘Ubayd was never seen except with the best dress among his people until he died.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jundab from Sufyan ibn al-Simt who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Clean garments put down the enemy.’”
أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ النَّضْرِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شِمْرٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَبِسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الطَّاقَ وَ السَّاجَ وَ الْخَمَائِصَ .
2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shamir from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, dressed in al-Taq, (a certain garment) al-Saj (green pallium) and al-Khama’is (a black gown).”’
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مَنِ اتَّخَذَ ثَوْباً فَلْيُنَظِّفْهُ .
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘One who chooses (makes use of) clothes, he must clean it.’”
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Jamuraniy from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn abu Hamzah from Sayf ibn ‘Amirah from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, if a believing person can have ten shirts. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he can do so.’ I then asked, ‘Can he have twenty.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he can do so.’ I asked, ‘Can he have thirty?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he can do so. This is not profligacy and lavishness. Profligacy is when you make your dress to maintain your dignity the cloth of your disgraceful condition.’”
الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْوَشَّاءِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَلْبَسُ ثَوْبَيْنِ فِي الصَّيْفِ يُشْتَرَيَانِ بِخَمْسِمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ .
5. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ who has said the following: “I once heard al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, would buy two dresses for summer, each valued at five hundred dirhams.’”
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from Yahya ibn al-‘Ala’ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin sent ‘Abd Allah ibn al-‘Abbas to ibn al-Kawwa’ and his people. He was wearing a shirt of fine fabric and a gown. They looked at him and said, ‘O ibn al- ‘Abbas, you are the better among us in our belief and you wear this kind of clothes.’ He replied, ‘This is the first thing about which I disagree with you. “Who has made it unlawful to maintain beauty and to eat the pure foods which Allah has created for His servants?” (7:32) and He also has said, “dress well when attending the mosques.” (7:31)’”
7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Safwan from Yusuf ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “I once visited abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and I was wearing a Jubbah of silk and al-Taylisan (pallium) of silk. He (the Imam) looked at me and I asked saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I am wearing a Taylisan of silk and a Jubbah of silk, what do you say about them?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Silk is not unlawful.’ I then said, ‘Its warp is abrisam (silk from silk worm as opposed to that from certain plant fibers or synthetic). He (the Imam) said, ‘Abrisam is not unlawful because when al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was murdered, he was wearing abrisam and jubbah of silk.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Abd Allah ibn al-‘ Abbas was sent to al-Khawarij by ’Amir al-Mu’minin and he stood before them wearing the best of his dresses with the best perfumes and with the best stumper. They said, ‘O ibn al- ‘Abbas you are the best of people to us but you have come wearing the dress of the tyrants and riding the stumper of the tyrants.’ He read to them this verse, ‘Say, who has made unlawful the beauties that Allah has brought out for His servants and the best sustenance.’ So dress up and beautify; Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty but it must be of the lawful ones.’”
8. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Ali in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Once, Sufyan al-Thawriy passed by Masjid al-Haram (the sacred area) and he saw abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, dressed in fine expensive clothes. He decided to meet him (the Imam) and scold him. He went close and said, ‘O child of the Messenger of Allah, the Messenger of Allah did not dress up with this kind of dress, Ali did not dress with this kind of dress nor any of your ancestors did.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, lived at a time when it was a financially serious and stringent condition. He (the Messenger of Allah) lived according to such conditions but the world thereafter has become financially relaxed. The most deserving in financial opportunities are the virtuous people.’ He (the Imam) then read this verse, ‘Say, who has made unlawful the beautiful things that Allah has brought out for His servants and the fine kinds of means of sustenance.’ (7:31) We are the most deserving of what Allah has granted. However, O Thawriy, what you see I have dressed up with I have done so for people. He (the Imam) pulled his hand to himself and raised the outer layer of his dress. Underneath on his body was a layer of rough textured garment. He (the Imam) said, ‘I wear this for my own soul and what you see (the outer layer) is for people.’ He (the Imam) then raised the outer layer of the garment of Sufyan, which was of rough texture but the layer underneath on his body was of a fine quality. He (the Imam) said, ‘You have dressed up for people with the outer layer and for yourself to enjoy with the fine quality layer underneath.’”
9. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from ai-Washsha’ from ‘Abd Aifah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘When I was in tawaf (walking around al- Ka‘bah) someone pulled my dress and he was ‘Abbad ibn Kathir al-Basriy saying, “O Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, you wear this kind of dress and your position to Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, is so close.’” I said, ‘It is a material made in Furqubiy (a place in Egypt) which I have bought for a dinar. Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, lived in a time when his kind of dress was suitable for him and if I wear that kind of dress now people will say, “He is another show off like ‘Abbad.’””
10. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, if a man can have ten shirts, changing them every day. He (the Imam) said, ’It is not unlawful.’”
11. Through the same chain of narrators as that of the previous Hadith the following is narrated from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, if I can have three shirts. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ I asked again until I reached ten shirts and he (the Imam) said, ‘Does exchanging give them more durability?’ I said, ‘It does, were I to wear one of them for a longer time, it would become less durable.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”
12. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Nuh ibn Shu’ayb from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who is affluent and has a great deal of clothes and very fine ones, palliums, many shirts which are used to extend the life of each shirt and beautify himself; if it is profligacy and lavishness. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not lavishness because Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, “The affluent can spend according to his affluent condition.” (65:7)’”
13. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Astdariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was leaning against me or he said, ‘against my father’ when ‘Abbad ibn Kathir al-Basriy met him (the Imam) and he (the Imam) had a dress of fabrics made in Marw (name of place) of fine quality. He (‘Abbad) said, ‘O abu ‘Abd Allah, you are of the family of the Holy Prophet, and your father was (so pious). What is this dress, made in Marw, on you? I wish you dressed in a lower quality dress.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said to him, ‘Woe on you, O ‘Abbad! Who has made unlawful the beautiful things that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has brought out for His servants and the very fine kinds of means of sustenance. When Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, grants bounties on His servant He loves to see it on him and it is not harmful. Woe on you, O ‘Abbad, I am a piece of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, do not trouble me.’ ‘Abbad wore two pieces of clothes made in Qitr (name of a place).”’
14. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Clean clothes remove sadness and it is of cleanliness for Salat (prayer).”’
15. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when a man said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, you have mentioned that Ali ibn abu Talib wore very rough-textured clothes. He wore a shirt valued at four dirham and similar items and we see you wear fine clothes.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said to him, ‘Ali ibn abu Talib wore that kind of clothes in a time when it was not disliked. Were he to wear such clothes today he would have been defamed. The best dress in every period of time is what the people of that time use, however, when our al-Qa’im will rise, he will wear the kind of dress Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, wore and follow his way of life.’”
16. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Asbat from the one who narrated to him who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not unlawful if one has twenty shirts. 5 ”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah, most Blessed, most High, dislikes a dress that causes public abhorrence.”’
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from abu ’Isma‘il al-Sarraj from ibn Muskan from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is enough humiliation for a man to wear a dress that causes public abhorrence or use such a stumper.’”
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Something that causes public abhorrence is in the fire, regardless of being good or bad.’”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from abu al-Jarud from abu Sa‘id who has said the following: “Al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one wears a dress that causes public abhorrence, Allah on the Day of Judgment will make him to wear a dress of fire.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الْبَسُوا الْبَيَاضَ فَإِنَّهُ أَطْيَبُ وَ أَطْهَرُ وَ كَفِّنُوا فِيهِ مَوْتَاكُمْ .
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You must wear white because it is fine and pure; and shroud your dead people with it.”’
الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ مُثَنًّى الْحَنَّاطِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الْبَسُوا الْبَيَاضَ فَإِنَّهُ أَطْيَبُ وَ أَطْهَرُ وَ كَفِّنُوا فِيهِ مَوْتَاكُمْ .
2. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Muthanna’ al-Hannat who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You must wear white; it is fine and pure; and shroud your dead people with it.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from certain persons of his people from Safwan al-Jammal who has said the following: “I provided abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, transportation to al-Kufah for the second time and abu Ja‘far al-Mansur was in it. When he (the Imam) arrived in al-Hashimiyah, the city of abu Ja‘far, al- Mansur, he (the Imam) pulled out his feet from the saddle’s stirrups and dismounted. He asked for al- Shahba ’ mule and dressed in white, with a white hat. When he (the Imam) entered the place of abu Ja‘far al-Mansur he said, ‘You have dressed like the Prophets.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Why do you want to distance me from the children of the Prophets?’ Abu Ja‘far al-Mansur said, ‘I was planning to send to al-Madinah an army to uproot all its palm trees, take all of its inhabitants as captives.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Why did you want to do so, O ’Amir al-Mu’minin?’ abu Ja‘far al- Mansur said, ‘Because I am informed that your slave Mu‘alla’ ibn Khunayth calls people to you and collects funds for you.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘By Allah it is not true.’ Abu Ja‘far al-Mansur said, ‘I cannot agree with you unless it is swearing to divorce, setting free of slaves, sacrificial offering and walking (Sa‘y).’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Are you commanding me to swear by things as partners of Allah? One who is not happy with Allah has no case with Allah.’ Abu Ja‘far al-Mansur said, ‘Are you showing me how great your knowledge of the law is?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Why do you distance me from understanding and law when I am a child of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause?’ Abu Ja‘far al- Mansur said, ‘I will bring the informer face to face with you.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can definitely do so.’ The informer came and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, asked him, ‘O so and so.’ He replied, ‘Yes, by Allah, besides whom no one deserves to be worshipped, who knows the unseen and seen, the Beneficent, the Merciful that you have done so (called people to yourself . . .).’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said to him, ‘Woe is on you! Are you glorifying Allah so that He may feel embarrassed to punish you?’ You must say, ‘I denounce the means and power of Allah and I resort to my own means and power.’ The man then took the oath the way he was told but before completing he dropped dead.’ Abu Ja‘far al-Mansur then said, ‘I will not believe anyone thereafter against you.’ He gave him (the Imam) good rewards and allowed him to go back.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) الْبَسُوا ثِيَابَ الْقُطْنِ فَإِنَّهَا لِبَاسُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ هُوَ لِبَاسُنَا .

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid f, abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘You must wear cotton clothes because it is the clothes of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and our clothes.”’

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Mu‘awiyah ibn Maysarah from al- Hakam ibn ‘Utaybah who has said the following: “I once visited abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in a well-furnished house. He (the Imam) was wearing a shirt which was not fully dry and a colored bed sheet which had left its color marks on his shoulder, and I was looking at the house and to him (the Imam). He (the Imam) said, ‘O Hakam, what do you say about it?’ I replied, ’I was about to say something about it after seeing it on you. With us it is used only by the youthful ones.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘O Hakam, ‘Who has made unlawful the beautiful things that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has brought out for His servants and the very fine kinds of means of sustenance/ (7:31) This is of the things that Allah has made to come out for His servants. This house which you see is the house of the woman and I am not far away from the time of the wedding, however, my house is that which you know/”
2. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Muhammad ibn Humran and Jamil ibn Darraj from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not unlawful to wear a cloth which is dyed with al-Mu‘asfar (dye with safflower)/”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from Zurarah who has said the following: “I once saw abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in al-Mu‘asfar (dye with safflower) dress and he (the Imam) said that he has just married a woman from Quraysh/”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) عَنْ لُبْسِ ثِيَابِ الشُّهْرَةِ وَ لَا أَقُولُ نَهَاكُمْ عَنْ لِبَاسِ الْمُعَصْفَرِ الْمُفْدَمِ .
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited the dress causing public abhorrence and I do not say he (the Messenger of Allah) prohibited you from wearing clothes dyed with safflower, sharp red color/”
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Wearing clothes of sharp color is not desirable except for weddings/”
6. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman from Jarrah al-Mad’iniy who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Wearing clothes of sharp color is not desirable except for weddings/”
7. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from Burayd from Malik ibn ’A‘yan who has said the following: “I once visited abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. A sheet of sharp red color was on him. I smiled when I entered. He (the Imam) said, ‘It seems I know why you are laughing. You laugh because of this cloth on me. It is because the Thaqafiy woman forced me to wear it and I love her.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘We do not perform Salat (prayer) in a cloth of sharp color and you also must not perform Salat (prayer) with such clothes.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘Afterward I went to see him when he had divorced her and he (the Imam) said, ‘I divorced her because I heard her denounce Ali, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, so I could not keep her with such attitude.”’
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from abu al-Jarud who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would wear al-Mu‘asfar (dye with safflower) clothes and printed clothes.”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَانَتْ لَهُ مِلْحَفَةٌ مُوَرَّسَةٌ يَلْبَسُهَا فِي أَهْلِهِ حَتَّى يَرْدَعَ عَلَى جَسَدِهِوَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) كُنَّا نَلْبَسُ الْمُعَصْفَرَ فِي الْبَيْتِ .
9. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, had a sheet that was from Wars (a place in Yemen). He (the Messenger of Allah) would use it in the family. The color of the sheet had left marks on him (the Messenger of Allah).’ Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘We would use al-Mu‘asfar (dye with safflower) clothes at home.’”
10. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘We would dye our clothes al-Mu‘asfar (dye with safflower) and banu ’Umayyah died with saffron dye.’”
11. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus who has said the following: “I saw abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, wearing al-Taylisan (pallium) of blue color.’”
