3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about women’s using gold and silver as ornaments. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ نَعْلُ سَيْفِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ قَائِمَتُهُ فِضَّةً وَ كَانَ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ حَلَقٌ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَ لَبِسْتُ دِرْعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَكُنْتُ أَسْحَبُهَا وَ فِيهَا ثَلَاثُ حَلَقَاتِ فِضَّةٍ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهَا وَ ثِنْتَانِ مِنْ خَلْفِهَا .
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that Nad (the end of the sheath) al-Qa’imah (the handle) of the sword of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was of silver and in between there were rings of silver. I once wore the armor of the Messenger of Allah and I trailed it on the ground. It had three rings of silver, one in front and two on the back.’”
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not unlawful to decorate the sword with gold and silver.’”
الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنِ الْمُثَنَّى عَنْ حَاتِمِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ حِلْيَةَ سَيْفِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَانَتْ فِضَّةً كُلُّهَا قَائِمَتُهُ وَ قِبَاعُهُ .
6. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from al-Muthanna’ from Hatim ibn Sulayman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The sword of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was decorated with gold and silver, as well as its Qa’imah (handle) and Qiba‘ (hilt).”’
7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Dawud ibn Sarhan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not unlawful to decorate al-Musahaf (Quran and books) and swords with gold and silver.’”
8. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah from more than one person from Aban from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Women can continue wearing ornaments.’” Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad from Aban from Muhammad ibn Muslim from abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, a similar Hadith.
عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن جعفر بن محمد الأشعري، عن ابن القداح، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: إن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله تختم في يساره بخاتم من ذهب ثم خرج على الناس وطفق الناس ينظرون إليه فوضع يده اليمنى على خنصره اليسرى حتى رجع إلى البيت فرمى به فما لبسه.عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن الوشاء، عن المثنى، عن حاتم بن إسماعيل عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام مثله.
9. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, wore the ring on his left hand which was of gold then he appeared among people who continued staring at it. He (the Messenger of Allah) placed his right hand on the pinky (little finger) of his left hand until he returned home; then threw it and did not wear it again.’” From abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, a narration, similar to the above Hadith, is also made by a number of our people from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Washsha’, from al-Muthanna’, from Hatim ibn ’Isma‘il.
10. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman from Rib‘iy from al-Fudayl ibn Yasar who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a bed which has gold in it; if it is proper to keep it in the house. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful if it is golden; but if it is gold then it is not lawful.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Mansur ibn al-‘Abbas from Sa‘id ibn Junah from ibn Khalid al- Zaydiy from Jabir who has said the following: “Once a group of people visited al-Husayn ibn Ali, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, and said, ‘O child of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, in your house we see such things that we dislike/ In his home there were pleasing spreading and cushions. He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘We marry women and give them their mahr (dower). They buy whatever they want and we do not have anything to say about it.’”
2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father from ‘ Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from abu Malik al-Juhaniy from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ata’ who has said the following: “I once visited abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and in his house I saw spreading, cushions, furnishings and pillows and I asked, ‘What are these?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘These are the belongings of the woman (wife the Imam).’”
3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Dawud ibn al- Haseen from al-Fadl abu al-‘Abbas who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘They made for him whatever he wanted, such as Salat (prayer) niche, statues, basins like wells. . . .’ (34:13) He (the Imam) said, ‘They were not statues of men and women but they were the figures of trees and similar objects.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَتْ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) وَسَائِدُ وَ أَنْمَاطٌ فِيهَا تَمَاثِيلُ يَجْلِسُ عَلَيْهَا .
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Salih al-Sindiy from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, (in his house) had pillows and floor furnishings which had pictures (of sceneries) on which he (the Imam) sat.’”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muskan from al- Hassan al-Zayyat who has said the following: “I once visited abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in a well-furnished house; and the next day I visited him in a house where there was nothing except a mat. He (the Imam) wore a thick and rough-textured shirt. He (the Imam) said, ‘The house that you saw was not my house. It was the house of the woman and yesterday was her day.’”
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from certain persons of his people from Ali ibn ’Isma‘il al- Maythamiy from abu al-Jarud who have said the following: “I once visited abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. He was sitting on a certain furnishing. I kept touching it with my hand. He (the Imam) said, ‘What you are touching is from Armenia.’ I then asked, ‘What do you have to do with Armenia?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘This is what mother of Ali (wife of the Imam) has brought.’ I then visited him at another time and kept touching what I was sitting on. He (the Imam) said, ‘It seems you like to see what is underneath you.’ I replied, ‘No, but a blind only plays.’ He (the Imam) said, to me, ‘That item of belonging was owned by mother of Ali. She was of the opinion of al-Khawarij and I wanted that she can return from her opinion until the morning and accept the divine authority of Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, but she refused; then in the morning I divorced her.’”
7. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ’Isma‘il ibn Mehran from ‘Abd Allah ibn al- Mughirah who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Once a man asked abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, if a man can sit on a furnishing which has pictures of things on it. He (the Imam) said, ‘Al-’A‘ajim (non- Arab) respect it, but we do not consider it important.’”
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy ibn Ali from Ali ibn Ja‘far who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about silk furnishings and similarly about brocaded items, prayer rugs of silk and of brocaded ones; if it is proper for a man to sleep on it, perform Salat (prayer) or lean against it. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can spread it and stand on it but he cannot perform Sajdah (prostration) on it.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad and A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad all from ibn Mahbub from al-‘ Ab has ibn al-Walid ibn Sabiyh who has said the following: “Once Shihab ibn ‘ Abd Rabbihi asked me to ask permission for him to visit abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and I informed him (the Imam) about it. He (the Imam) said, ’He can visit if he likes.’ I took him to the house of abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. It was during the night and Shihab had a mask on him. I found a furnishing for him to sit on and he sat down. Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, said to him, ‘O Shihab, remove your mask; it causes doubt during the night and disgrace in the day.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( صلوات الله عليه ) إِذَا ظَهَرَتِ الْقَلَانِسُ الْمُتَرِّكَةُ ظَهَرَ الزِّنَا .
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘When al-Matrakah (a certain kind of cape) becomes public, so also will become fornication.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from [his father] from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Dihqan from Durust ibn abu Mansur from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Folding clothes is giving them rest and durability.’”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Mu’ammar ibn Khallad who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Once I left home to visit Dawud ibn ‘Isa ibn Ali who camped at Maymun well. I had two thick pieces of clothes on me and I saw an old woman and two girls with her. I asked her if she sells them. She said, ‘Yes, but a man like you will not buy them.’ I asked, ‘Why is it so?’ She replied, ‘One is a singer and the other is a flute player.’ I then met Dawud ibn ‘Isa who treated me with high esteem and gave me my seat. When I left, he asked his companions, ‘Do you know him? This is Ali ibn Musa. People of Iraq believe obedience to him is obligatory.’”
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn al-Hakam who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, disliked wearing al-Burtalah (a deep cape).”
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qasaniy from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Minqariy from Hammad ibn ‘Isa who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once looked at the furnishings in the house of a man, and said, ‘A spreading for the man, one for his wife, one for his guests and one for Satan.’”
7. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from certain persons of his people from Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Tayalisy from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one wears a loincloth in a sitting position, he remains safe from lower back pain.’”
8. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Mansur ibn al-‘Abbas from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin from ‘Amr ibn Ibrahim from Khalaf ibn Hammad from Ali al-Qummiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Growing hairs in the nose and spacious shirt afford immunity from leprosy. Have you not heard a poet’s saying, “You will not see my shirt other than being of wide sides and sleeves?”’
9. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn af-Husayn al-‘ Alawiy who has said the foiiowing: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘One sign of the manhood of a man is plumpness of his stumpers.’ He (the narrator) has said that he heard him (the Imam) saying, ‘Three things are of the signs of manhood of a man. One is liveliness of his stumper, good looking slaves and distinguished house furnishings.’”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ مِسْمَعٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا يَمْسَحْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِثَوْبِ مَنْ لَمْ يَكْسَهُ .
10. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Shammun from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al- Rahman from Misma‘ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You must not touch the clothes of one who has not yet worn them.’”
11. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Muhammad ibn Bakr from Zakariya al-Mu’min’ from those who narrated to him who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Fold your clothes for the night because Satan wears during the night the spread out clothes.’”
12. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Yahya ibn al-Mubarak from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jabalah al-Kinaniy who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, welcomed me and I was hanging a fish in my hand. He (the Imam) said, ‘Throw it away; I dislike that a noble and high ranking man himself carry something unimportant.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You are a people who have a large number of enemies. People are your enemies, O Shi ‘ah, because you have become their enemies, therefore, you must beautify yourselves before them to whatever degree you can.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from al-Hassan ibn al-Jahm who has said the following: “Once I visited abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. He had applied black dye to his hairs. I said to him (the Imam), ‘I see that you have applied black dye to your hairs.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘In applying dye there is reward. Applying dye and to be prepared is of matters by which Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, increases the chastity of women. Women ignore chastity because of their husband’s ignoring preparedness.’ I then said, ‘It is narrated to us that applying henna increases oldness.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘What else can you increase in oldness? Oldness increases every day.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ مِسْكِينِ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَكَمِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَنَظَرَ إِلَى الشَّيْبِ فِي لِحْيَتِهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) نُورٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ شَابَ شَيْبَةً فِي الْإِسْلَامِ كَانَتْ لَهُ نُوراً يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِقَالَ فَخَضَبَ الرَّجُلُ بِالْحِنَّاءِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَلَمَّا رَأَى الْخِضَابَ قَالَ نُورٌ وَ إِسْلَامٌ فَخَضَبَ الرَّجُلُ بِالسَّوَادِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) نُورٌ وَ إِسْلَامٌ وَ إِيمَانٌ وَ مَحَبَّةٌ إِلَى نِسَائِكُمْ وَ رَهْبَةٌ فِي قُلُوبِ عَدُوِّكُمْ .
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Miskin ibn abu al-Hakam from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once a man came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. He (the Messenger of Allah) looked at the signs of oldness in his beard. The Holy Prophet said, ‘It is light.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) then said, ‘If one becomes white-headed because of oldness in Islam he will have a light on the Day of Judgment.’ The man applied dye to his hair with henna, then visited the Holy Prophet. On seeing him the Holy Prophet, said, ‘It is light and Islam.’ He then applied black dye to his hairs and the Holy Prophet, said, ‘It is light, Islam, belief and love from your women, and fear in the hearts of your enemies.’”
أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مُوسَى الْوَرَّاقِ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ دَخَلَ قَوْمٌ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) فَرَأَوْهُ مُخْتَضِباً بِالسَّوَادِ فَسَأَلُوهُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ أُحِبُّ النِّسَاءَ وَ أَنَا أَتَصَنَّعُ لَهُنَّ .
3. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from al-‘Abbas ibn Musa al-Warraq who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once a group of people visited abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, and they saw him with black dye applied to his hairs. They asked him about it and he (the Imam) said, ‘I am a man who loves women and I pretend before them.’”
أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جَنَاحٍ عَنْ أَبِي خَالِدٍ الزَّيْدِيِّ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ دَخَلَ قَوْمٌ عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ( صلوات الله عليه ) فَرَأَوْهُ مُخْتَضِباً بِالسَّوَادِ فَسَأَلُوهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَمَدَّ يَدَهُ إِلَى لِحْيَتِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فِي غَزَاةٍ غَزَاهَا أَنْ يَخْتَضِبُوا بِالسَّوَادِ لِيَقْوَوْا بِهِ عَلَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ .
4. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from Sa‘id ibn Junah from abu Khalid al-Zaydiy from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once a group of people visited al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, and saw black dye applied to his hairs. They asked him (the Imam) about it and he (the Imam) extended his hand to his beard and said, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, in an armed expedition commanded them to apply black dye so they can overpower the pagans.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ حَفْصٍ الْأَعْوَرِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ خِضَابِ اللِّحْيَةِ وَ الرَّأْسِ أَ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ إِنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( صلوات الله عليه ) لَمْ يَخْتَضِبْ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا مَنَعَهُ قَوْلُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِنَّ هَذِهِ سَتُخْضَبُ مِنْ هَذِهِ .
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar from Hafs ibn al-A‘war who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of coloring the beard and head if it is of Sunnah. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is of the Sunnah .’ I then said, ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, did not use dye.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is because of the words of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, “This will be dyed with this”.”’

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’In al-Khidab (applying hair dye) there are three positive qualities. It shows one’s firmness in war, love of women and increase in sexual desire.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ خِضَابِ الشَّعْرِ فَقَالَ قَدْ خَضَبَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ وَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) بِالْكَتَمِ .
7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about applying dye to the hairs. He (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, applied it as well as al-Husayn and abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, with al- Katam (a plant that looks like myrtle and gives out a black dye).”’
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ خَضَبَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ لَمْ يَمْنَعْ عَلِيّاً ( عليه السلام ) إِلَّا قَوْلُ النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) تَخْتَضِبُ هَذِهِ مِنْ هَذِهِ وَ قَدْ خَضَبَ الْحُسَيْنُ وَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) .
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, applied hair dye and ’Amir al-Mu’minin did not apply it because of the words of the Holy Prophet, ‘This will be dyed with this’ . Al-Husayn and abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, applied hair dye.’”

Abu al-‘Abbas has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ja‘far from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Hamid from Sayf ibn ‘Amirah from abu Shaybah al-Asadiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about al-Khidab (hair dye). He (the Imam) said, ’Al- Husayn and abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, applied hair dye with henna and al-Katam.’”
10. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ibn Khalid from Fadalah ibn Ayyub from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I saw abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, had applied hair dye with henna of red color.’”
11. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from Muhammad ibn ‘Adhafir from ‘Umar ibn Yazid who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must not allow the hair dye to wear off because it is despair.’”
12. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar and Muhammad ibn al-Hassan have narrated from Ibrahim ibn Ishaq al-Ahmar from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Mehran from his father in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “The Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Spending one dirham on hair dye is better than spending one dirham in the way of Allah. There are fourteen advantages in it. It dispels air from the ears, brightens gloominess from the eyes, softens the nose ducts, sweetens the fragrance, strengthens the gums, clears fainting and reduces temptation of Satan. It gives happiness to angels, gives good news to believers, disappoints the unbelievers, it is beautification, it is a perfume and freedom in one’s grave because of which Mukar and Nakir (the two angels in one’s grave) shy away.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Sayf ibn ‘Amirah from abu Bakr al- Hadramiy who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Alqamah, al-Harith ibn al-Mughirah, abu Hassan and I were with abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and ‘Alqamah had applied hair dye with henna, al-Harith had applied hair dye with woad and abu Hassan would not apply hair dye. Every man pointing to his beard asked him (the Imam), ‘What do you say about it (hair dye), may Allah grant you kindness ? 5 Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, said, ‘It is very good . 5 They asked, ‘Did abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, apply hair dye ? 5 He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, when he married al-Thaqafiyah, her slave-girls applied hair dye to his hairs. 5 ”
2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about applying Woad. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful to an old man ."

Ibn Mahbub has narrated from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once saw abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, chewing gums and he (the Imam) said, ‘O Muhammad, woad has loosened my molar teeth so I chew gums to strengthen them . 5 His teeth had become loose so he tied them with gold.”
4. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from ibn Faddal from Tha’labah ibn Maymun from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Woad has affected my molar teeth. 5 ”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from a number of his people from Ali ibn Asbat from his uncle Ya‘qub ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘At the time al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was murdered he had applied hair dye with woad. 5 ”
عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْخِضَابِ بِالْوَسْمَةِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ قَدْ قُتِلَ الْحُسَيْنُ ( عليه السلام ) وَ هُوَ مُخْتَضِبٌ بِالْوَسْمَةِ .

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from Yunus from abu Bakr al-Hadramiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about applying hair dye with woad. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful. At the time al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was murdered he had applied hair dye with woad. 5 ”

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad al-Jawhariy from al-Husayn ibn ‘Umar ibn Yazid from his father who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Applying black hair dye is entertaining for women and show one’s firmness to the enemy. 5 ”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn al-Hakam who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Applying hair dye with henna increases the beauty of the face as well as gray hairs.”’
2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Applying hair dye with henna stirs up gray hairs.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I saw abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, had applied hair dye with henna.’”
