عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ مَوْلًى لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ( صلوات الله عليه ) يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) اخْتَضِبُوا بِالْحِنَّاءِ فَإِنَّهُ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ وَ يُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ وَ يُطَيِّبُ الرِّيحَ وَ يُسَكِّنُ الزَّوْجَةَ .
4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from Fadalah ibn Ayyub from Hariz from a Mawla’ of Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, who has said the following: “I once heard Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, saying that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Apply hair dye with henna, it increases eyesight, grows hair, sweetens the smell and comforts the wife.’”
5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ‘Ubdus ibn Ibrahim al-Baghdadiy in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Applying henna dispels bad odor, increases beauty of the face, sweetens the fragrance and beautifies the child.’”
6. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ali ibn Sulayman ibn Rashid from Malik ibn ‘Ushaym from ’Isma‘il ibn Bazi‘ who has said the following: “I once said to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘My young daughter does not experience Hayd (menses) anymore.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Apply hair dye to her head with henna; her Hayd (menses) will return.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘She followed the instruction and her Hayd (menses) came back.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Mu’ammar ibn Khallad who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one comes to know of three things he will not ignore them. They are clipping hairs, rolling up clothes and going to bed with slave-girls.”’
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, ‘You must clip your hairs; it reduces its smell, bugs (like flea etc.) and dirt. It thickens your neck and clears your eyesight.’” In another Hadith it is said that it comforts your body.’”
3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “I once said to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Our people narrate that shaving one’s head, except for al-Hajj or al-‘Umrah, is like causing deformity.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, after al-Hajj and al-‘Umrah would go to the town called Sayah and shave his head.’”
4. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from in a marfu‘ manner the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘People say shaving of the head is like causing deformity.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is like performing al-‘Umrah for us and deformity for our enemies.’”
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from all from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Umar ibn Aslam who has said the following: “I once applied cupping. The cupping man shaved that area. Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saw me and asked, ‘What is this? Go and shave your head.’ I went and shaved my head.’”
أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) مَا تَقُولُ فِي إِطَالَةِ الشَّعْرِ فَقَالَ كَانَ أَصْحَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مُشْعِرِينَ يَعْنِي الطَّمَّ .
6. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about growing long hairs. He (the Imam) said that companions of the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, clipped their hairs.’”
7. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Sa’dan from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘I shave every Friday from this to that duration.’”
8. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Yahya ibn al-Mubarak from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jabalah from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, at times hairs grow at my back and it causes great worries for me.’ He (the Imam) said to me, ‘O Ishaq did you not know that shaving one’s back dispels anxieties?”’
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Dawud ibn al- Hassan from abu al-‘Abbas al-Baqbaq who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who has long hairs: if he must leave them or part them. He (the Imam) said, ‘He must part them.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مَنِ اتَّخَذَ شَعْراً فَلْيُحْسِنْ وِلَايَتَهُ أَوْ لِيَجُزَّهُ .
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one keeps hairs he must maintain them properly or clip them.”’
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ هَارُونَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ أَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَفْرُقُ شَعْرَهُ قَالَ لَا إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَانَ إِذَا طَالَ شَعْرُهُ كَانَ إِلَى شَحْمَةِ أُذُنِهِ .
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Yahya ibn Harun who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, if the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, parted his hairs. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, the Messenger of Allah would keep his hairs long enough to reach his ear lobe only.’”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنَّهُمْ يَرْوُونَ أَنَّ الْفَرْقَ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ قُلْتُ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَرَقَ قَالَ مَا فَرَقَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ لَا كَانَ الْأَنْبِيَاءُ ( عليهم السلام ) تُمْسِكُ الشَّعْرَ .
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Amr ibn Ibrahim from Khalaf ibn Hammad from ‘Amr ibn Thabit who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘They narrated that parting the hairs is of Sunnah. He (the Imam) said, ‘Of the Sunnahl’ I said, ‘They think that the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, parted his hairs.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The Holy Prophet did not part his hairs nor did the Prophets grow their hairs.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) الْفَرْقُ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَهَلْ فَرَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) قَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ فَرَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ لَيْسَ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ مَنْ أَصَابَهُ مَا أَصَابَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَفْرُقُ كَمَا فَرَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَقَدْ أَصَابَ سُنَّةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ إِلَّا فَلَاقُلْتُ لَهُ كَيْفَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) حِينَ صُدَّ عَنِ الْبَيْتِ وَ قَدْ كَانَ سَاقَ الْهَدْيَ وَ أَحْرَمَ أَرَاهُ اللَّهُ الرُّؤْيَا الَّتِي أَخْبَرَهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا فِي كِتَابِهِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لَقَدْ صَدَقَ اللَّهُ رَسُولَهُ الرُّؤْيا بِالْحَقِّ لَتَدْخُلُنَّ الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرامَ إِنْ شاءَ اللَّهُ آمِنِينَ مُحَلِّقِينَ رُؤُسَكُمْ وَ مُقَصِّرِينَ لا تَخافُونَفَعَلِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) أَنَّ اللَّهَ سَيَفِي لَهُ بِمَا أَرَاهُ فَمِنْ ثَمَّ وَفَّرَ ذَلِكَ الشَّعْرَ الَّذِي كَانَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ حِينَ أَحْرَمَ انْتِظَاراً لِحَلْقِهِ فِي الْحَرَمِ حَيْثُ وَعَدَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَلَمَّا حَلَقَهُ لَمْ يُعِدْ فِي تَوْفِيرِ الشَّعْرِ وَ لَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) .
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn abu Nasr from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, if parting hairs is of Sunnah. He (the Imam) replied, ‘No, it is not of Sunnah.’ I then asked if the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, parted his hairs.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he (the Messenger of Allah) did so.’ I then asked, ‘If the Messenger of Allah parted his hairs, then how is it that it is not part of the Sunnah ?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah experienced a certain condition which made him to part his hairs. If others experience such a condition, they also do as he (the Messenger of Allah) did and in so doing they follow the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, otherwise, they do not follow the Sunnah.’ I then asked, ‘How did that happen?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘When the Messenger of Allah was prevented from visiting the House, he had already driven his sacrificial animal to be offered as a sacrifice and had assumed the state of Ihram. Allah showed him in his dream, of which Allah has spoken in His book saying, “Allah certainly made the dream come true for the messenger in all truth. That is, you will enter al-Masjid al-Haram (the Sacred Masjid) if Allah so wills, in peace with your heads shaved, and Taqsir (cut or trim a part of his nails or hair) being done without any fear.” (48:26) Thus, the Messenger of Allah learned that Allah would keep His promise about what He has shown him in the dream. For this reason he allowed his hairs that was on his head at the time of assuming the state of Ihram to grow, waiting for the time of shaving in al-Haram (the sacred area) as Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, had promised. When he shaved his head as part of the acts of his al-Hajj, he (the Messenger of Allah) thereafter did not allow his hairs to grow. It (growing of his hairs) was not because of his intention to grow hairs.”’
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn al-‘Muthanna’ from Sadir af-Sayrafiy who has said the following: “I once saw abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, remove hairs from his cheek and from under his chin.’”
2. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad and Ali ibn Muhammad from Salih ibn abu Hammad all from al-Washsha’ from Ahmad ibn ‘ A’idh from abu Khadijah from Mu’alla’ ibn Khunayth who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Whatever of the beard exceeds one’s fistful is in the fire.’”
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Ali ibn Ishaq ibn Sa‘d ibn Yunus from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The amount of beard that you must keep is what comes in inside your fist and you must clip off whatever exceeds you fist.’”
4. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muskan from al-Hassan al-Zayyat who has said the following: “I once saw abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, had made his beard lighter.’”
5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from certain persons of his people from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once saw abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when the barber trimmed his beard, he (the Imam) said, ‘Make it round.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِنَّ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ مِنَ الشَّارِبِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْإِطَارَ .
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The mustache must be trimmed until the lips become visible.’”
7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy ibn Ali from Ali ibn Ja‘far from his brother, abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about trimming the mustache; if it is of Sunnah. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is of Sunnah.”’
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Once we mentioned trimming the mustache before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is a charm and trimming it is of Sunnah.”’
9. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from certain persons of his people from Ali ibn Asbat from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman who had seen abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, trim his mustache up to the root of the hairs.”’
10. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah from those who narrated to him has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Whatever of beard exceeds the fist is in the fire.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا يُطَوِّلَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ شَارِبَهُ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَتَّخِذُهُ مَخْبَأً يَسْتَتِرُ بِهِ .
11. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You must not allow your mustache to grow long; Satan makes it his hiding place and cover.’”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنِ الدِّهْقَانِ عَنْ دُرُسْتَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَرَّ بِالنَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) رَجُلٌ طَوِيلُ اللِّحْيَةِ فَقَالَ مَا كَانَ عَلَى هَذَا لَوْ هَيَّأَ مِنْ لِحْيَتِهِ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلَ فَهَيَّأَ لِحْيَتَهُ بَيْنَ اللِّحْيَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَلَمَّا رَآهُ قَالَ هَكَذَا فَافْعَلُوا .
12. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from certain persons of his people from al-Dihqan from Durust who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that a man with a long beard once passed by the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, who said, ‘He would not look like that had he prepared his beard.’ This remark reached that man and he prepared his beard, then visited the Holy Prophet. When he (the Messenger of Allah) saw him he said, ‘This is how you must keep it.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn Hamzah al-Ash‘ariy in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Removing hairs from the nostrils (outside) beautifies the face.”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jundab from Sufyan ibn al-Simt who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Clean and fresh clothes saddens the enemy, using oil dispels despair and combing the head removes al-Waba’.’ I then asked, ‘What is al-Waba’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is fever. Combing the beard strengthens molar teeth.’”
2. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Sama‘ah from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan al-Mithamiy from Muhammad ibn Ishaq from ‘Ammar al-Nawfaliy from his father who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Combing dispels al-Waba’. Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, had a comb in (for) the Masjid which he used after completing Salat (prayer).”’
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from al-Husayn ibn al-Hassan ibn ‘Asem from his father who has said the following: “I once visited abu Ibrahim, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and he had an ivory comb in his hand which he used. I said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, in Iraq there are people with us who think that using ivory comb is not permissible.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘For what reason it can be as you said it is, my father had one or two ivory combs.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘You must use ivory comb; it removes al-Waba’ (fever).”’
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Salih ibn al-Sindiy from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from Musa ibn Bakr who has said the following: “I saw abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, using ivory comb and I bought it for him.’”
5. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about ivory. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful and I have one ivory comb.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Mahbub from Nadr from ‘Anbasah Sa‘id in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “The Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Combing of the head very often removes al-Waba’ (fever), attracts sustenance and increases one’s ability to go to bed with one’s wife.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah who has said the following: “About the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘You must beautify yourselves near every Masjid’ abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Of such matters one is combing at the time of every Salat (prayer).”’

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Nuh ibn Shu’ayb from ibn Mayyah from Yunus from those who narrated to him who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, has said, ‘When you comb your head and beard, then wipe the comb against your chest; it removes worries and al-Waba’ (fever).’”
10. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn ‘Atiyyah from ’Isma‘il ibn Jabir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one uses his comb seventy times and counts it one by one, Satan will not come close to him for forty days.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from Ibrahim ibn Mehzam from al-Qasim ibn al- Walid who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about elephant bones, its oil (perfume) containers and combs. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid who has said the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ’Clipping fingernails repels great many pains and makes the sustenance flow.”’
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Clipping fingernails on Fridays is immunity from leprosy, albinism and blindness. If you do not need clipping then just scratch them.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Sulayman from his uncle ‘Abd Allah ibn Hilal who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, ’You must clip your mustache and fingernails every Friday, if you do not need clipping then just scratch them. You will not be affected by insanity, leprosy and albinism.’”
4. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Clipping fingernails and mustache every Friday is immunity from albinism and insanity.’”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from ibn ‘Uqbah from his father who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is of Sunnah to clip one’s fingernails.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from those whom he has mentioned from Ayyub ibn al-Hurr from abu Hamzah who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’There is clipping of fingernails; it reduces Satan; and because of it (unclipped fingernails) is forgetfulness.’”

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from al-Hakam ibn Miskin from Hudhayfah ibn Mansur who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’The strongest cover and most secret place for Satan by which he dominates children of Adam, Alayhi al-Salam is his hiding under the fingernails.’”

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from Ali al-Hannat from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from al- Husayn ibn abu al-‘Ala’ from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, about the reward for clipping the mustache and fingernails every Friday. He (the Imam) said, ‘He continues with cleanliness until the next Friday.’”

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Faddal from Hafs ibn al-Jurjaniy from abu al-Khasib al-Rabi‘ ibn Bakr al-Azdiy from ‘ Abd al- Rahim al-Qasir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. There is one’s clipping his mustache and fingernails every Friday. When clipping, one should say, “In the name of Allah, with Allah, and on the Sunnah of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause.” For every piece of clipped hair Allah writes for him the reward of setting free one enslaved soul. He will not become ill except the illness because of which he will die.’”
10. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Muhammad ibn Talhah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Clipping fingernails, mustache and washing one’s head with hollyhock (marshmallow plant) every Friday banishes poverty and increases one’s sustenance.’”
