   مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( صلوات الله عليه ) الْمَاءُ سَيِّدُ الشَّرَابِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ .عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بِإِسْنَادِهِ مِثْلَهُ .

   1. Muhammad ibn Yahya Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Bakr ibn Salih from ‘Isa ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Umar ibn Ali from his father from his grandfather who has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Water is the master of drinks in this world and in the next world.’” A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah al-Barqiy from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Isa ibn ‘Abd Allah through the chain of his narrators has narrated a similar Hadith.

   أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ وَ ذَكَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْنَا مِنَ الْآبَاءِ وَ الْأُمَّهَاتِ وَ الْمَاءِ الْبَارِدِ .

   2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from ibn Faddal from Tha’labah ibn Maymun from ‘Ubayd ibn Zurarah who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, upon mentioning the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, ‘O Lord, You know that he (the Messenger of Allah) is more beloved to us than (our) fathers and mothers and cool water.’”

   مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ سَعْدَانَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَوَّلُ مَا يَسْأَلُ اللَّهُ جَلَّ ذِكْرُهُ الْعَبْدَ أَنْ يَقُولَ لَهُ أَ وَ لَمْ أُرْوِكَ مِنْ عَذْبِ الْفُرَاتِ .

   3. Muhammad ibn Yahya and more than one person has narrated from al-‘ Abbas ibn Ma‘ruf from Sa‘dan ibn Muslim from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn al-Hajj aj who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The first thing that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, will ask the servants will be, ‘Did I not quench your thirst with sweet water of al-Furat?”’

   عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الرَّيَّانِ بْنِ الصَّلْتِ يَرْفَعُهُ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) سَيِّدُ شَرَابِ الْجَنَّةِ الْمَاءُ .

   4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Ali ibn al-Rayyan ibn al-Salt in a marfu ‘ manner who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The master of the drink in paradise is water.’”

   5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Isa ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Umar ibn Ali from his father from his grandfather who has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Water is the master of drinks in this world and in the next world.’”

   مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَمَّنْ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنْ تَلَذَّذَ بِالْمَاءِ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَذَّذَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْ أَشْرِبَةِ الْجَنَّةِ .

   6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from ibn Faddal from those who narrated to him who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one enjoys and appreciates the taste of water in this world Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, will give him water in paradise.’”

   أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْكُوفِيُّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الْمِيثَمِيِّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عُلْوَانَ قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ طَعْمِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ سَلْ تَفَقُّهاً وَ لَا تَسْأَلْ تَعَنُّتاً طَعْمُ الْمَاءِ طَعْمُ الْحَيَاةِ .

   7. Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Kufiy has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hassan al-Mithamiy from Ali ibn Asbat from ‘Abd al-Samad ibn Bandar from al-Husayn ibn ‘Ulwan who has said the following: “Once, a man asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the taste of water. He (the Imam) said, ‘Ask to understand not to harass. The taste of water is the taste of life.’”

   عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مَصُّوا الْمَاءَ مَصّاً وَ لَا تَعُبُّوهُ عَبّاً فَإِنَّهُ يُوجَدُ مِنْهُ الْكُبَادُ .

   1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ’Drink water in a sipping manner but do not gulp and pour it down at once; it may cause liver illness.”’

   سَهْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ الْبَصْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي طَيْفُورٍ الْمُتَطَبِّبِ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْمَاضِي ( عليه السلام ) فَنَهَيْتُهُ عَنْ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ ( عليه السلام ) وَ مَا بَأْسٌ بِالْمَاءِ وَ هُوَ يُدِيرُ الطَّعَامَ فِي الْمَعِدَةِ وَ يُسَكِّنُ الْغَضَبَ وَ يَزِيدُ فِي اللُّبِّ وَ يُطْفِئُ الْمِرَارَ .

   2. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Shammun al-Basriy from abu Tayfur al-Mutatabib who has said the following: “I once visited abu al-Hassan, al-Madiy, Alayhi al-Salam, and I prohibited him from drinking water. He (the Imam) said, ‘What is wrong with water when it turns food in the stomach, calms down the anger, increases marrows (learning ability) and removes bitterness?”’

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَصْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي دَاوُدَ الْمُسْتَرِقِّ عَمَّنْ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَدَعَا بِتَمْرٍ فَأَكَلَ وَ أَقْبَلَ يَشْرَبُ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لَوْ أَمْسَكْتَ عَنِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا آكُلُ التَّمْرَ لِأَسْتَطِيبَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ.

    3. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad al-Basriy from Dawud al-Mustariq from the one who narrated to him who has said the following: “I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and he asked for dates which he ate and then he kept drinking water. I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I wish you refrain from drinking water.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘I eat dates only to make water taste more delicious.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ يَاسِرٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) عَجَباً لِمَنْ أَكَلَ مِثْلَ ذَا وَ أَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ وَ لَمْ يَشْرَبْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ كَيْفَ لَا تَنْشَقُّ مَعِدَتُهُ .

    4. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from certain persons of his people from Yasir who have said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said, ‘I wonder about the one who eats ‘this much,’ making a hand gesture, ‘and does not drink any water on it, how is it that his stomach does not burst.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ شُرْبَ الْمَاءِ الْبَارِدِ أَكْثَرُ تَلَذُّذاً .

    1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn al-Hakam who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Drinking cold water is more delicious.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جَنَاحٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عُمَرَ الْحَلَبِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ هُوَ يُوصِي رَجُلًا فَقَالَ لَهُ أَقْلِلْ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ يَمُدُّ كُلَّ دَاءٍ وَ اجْتَنِبِ الدَّوَاءَ مَا احْتَمَلَ بَدَنُكَ الدَّاءَ .

    2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Sa‘id ibn Junah from Ahmad ibn ‘Umar al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when giving advice to a man said, ‘Reduce drinking water; it may stretch all illness and refrain from taking medicine as long as your body can take the pain.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ يَاسِرٍ الْخَادِمِ عَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِكَثْرَةِ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ وَ لَا تُكْثِرْ مِنْهُ عَلَى غَيْرِهِ وَ قَالَ أَ رَأَيْتَ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَكَلَ مِثْلَ ذَا وَ جَمَعَ يَدَيْهِ كِلْتَيْهِمَا لَمْ يَضُمَّهُمَا وَ لَمْ يُفَرِّقْهُمَا ثُمَّ لَمْ يَشْرَبْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ كَانَ يَنْشَقُّ مَعِدَتُهُ .

    3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Yasar al-Khadim who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not harmful to drink water after food but do not drink water excessively on things other than food.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Consider, the man who eats this much’ — he brought his hands close to each other and did not join them and did not keep them much apart - ‘then he does not drink water, his stomach may burst.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ بَكْرٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا تُكْثِرْ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْمَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ مَادَّةٌ لِكُلِّ دَاءٍ .

    4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Hassan from Musa ibn Bakr from certain persons of our people who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not drink water excessively, it is the substance of every illness.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ شُرْبُ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ بِالنَّهَارِ أَقْوَى وَ أَصَحُّ لِلْبَدَنِ .

    1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’During the day drinking water when standing gives the body more power and good health.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْمُودٍ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ شُرْبُ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ بِالنَّهَارِ يُمْرِئُ الطَّعَامَ وَ شُرْبُ الْمَاءِ مِنْ قِيَامٍ بِاللَّيْلِ يُورِثُ الْمَاءَ الْأَصْفَرَ .

    2. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn abu Mahmud in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘During the day drinking water when standing makes the food more pleasant; but drinking water during the night when standing causes al-Safra ’ (yellowness, acidity).”’

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْمَدَائِنِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَامَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) إِلَى إِدَاوَةٍ فَشَرِبَ مِنْهَا وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ .

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Hashim [from abu Hashim] ibn Yahya al-Mada’iniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin went to the water container and drank water standing.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْقُمِّيُّ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ أَ فَأَشْرَبُ بِنَفَسٍ وَاحِدٍ حَتَّى أَرْوَى قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ فَأَسْجُدُ وَ يَدِي فِي ثَوْبِي قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ مَا مِنْ هَذَا وَ شِبْهِهِ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ .

    4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajj aj who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when ‘Abd al-Malik al-Qummiy came and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, can I drink water standing?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ He then asked, ‘Can I drink in one breath until I am satisfied?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If you like you can do so.’ He then asked, ‘Can I perform Sajdah (prostration) with my hand in my pocket?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘I, by Allah, am not afraid for you of this and similar things (as long as your belief is proper).”’

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي الْمِقْدَامِ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَا وَ أَبِي فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ خَزَفٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَشَرِبَ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ أَبِي فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَنِيهِ فَشَرِبْتُ مِنْهُ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ .

    5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from his grandfather from ‘Abd Allah ibn al- Mughirah from ‘Amr ibn abu al-Miqdam who has said the following: “Once my father and I were with abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when a bowl made of pottery with water was brought. He (the Imam) drank standing. He then gave it to my father who also drank standing and gave it to me and I also drank standing.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ibn al-‘Arzamiy from Hatim ibn ’Isma‘il al-Madiniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin once drank water standing. He then drank the water left from his wudu standing; then he turned to Al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and said, ‘Son, I saw your grandfather, the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, doing as I just did.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from certain persons of his people from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from an old man from the people of al- Madinah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who drinks water in one breath until he is satisfied. He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) said, ‘Is the pleasure of taste anything but that?’ I then said, ‘People say that it is the thirsty camel’s way of drinking.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘They have spoken a lie. The thirsty camel’s way of drinking is when the name of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, is not mentioned.’”

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘A man only drinks water but Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, for that reason admits him in paradise.’ I then asked, ‘How can that happen, O child of the Messenger of Allah?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The man drinks water, stops drinking, moves the bowl away when he still has the desire for water, and he praises Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious. He then drinks again, then moves the bowl of water away when he still has the desire for water, then praises Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, then drinks more water and, thus, Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, makes paradise necessary for him.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when drinking water would say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has given us cool and clear water and not of salty and foul smelling kind, and has not yet questioned us because of our sins.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from the son of uncle of ‘Umar ibn Yazid from daughter of ‘Umar ibn Yazid from her father who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘If one of you drinks water, and says , ‘In the name of Allah,’ then drinks, then stops and say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah,’ He then drinks and says, ‘In the name of Allah’ then stops, and says, ‘All praise belongs to Allah’ then drinks and says, ‘In the name of Allah’ then stops and says, ‘All praise belongs to Allah,’ that water keeps saying Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects) for him as long as it is in his belly until it goes out.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from Ibrahim al-Karkhiy from Talhah ibn Zayd who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would drink water in bowls from Syria that were brought from there and given as gifts to him (the Messenger of Allah). 5 ”

    4. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from Yunus ibn Ya‘qub from his brother Yusuf who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in al-Hijr (near al-Ka‘bah) and he asked for water. Water was brought in a yellow bowl (made of brass) and a man said, “Abbad ibn Kathir dislikes drinking water from yellow.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ He (the Imam) said to the man, ‘Did you ask him (‘Abbad ibn Kathir) if it was made of gold or silver?”’

    5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Do not drink water from the broken part of a bowl or from its handle because Satan sits on the broken part and on the handle (ring).”’

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn abu Hashim from Salim ibn Mukram who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘My father once said to ‘Amr ibn ‘Ubayd, Bashir ibn al- Rahhal and Wasil in a Hadith, “Do not drink water from the ear (handle) of a bowl or its broken part if there is any, because it is the place from which Satan drinks.’””

    7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once passed by a people who drank water with their mouths during the war of Tabuk. The Holy Prophet said to them, ‘Drink with your hands; it is the best of your utensils.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from Ibrahim ibn Talhah ibn Zayd who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, liked to drink water with bowls made in Syria and said, ‘It is the best of your utensils.’”

    9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from and al-Husayn from Muhammad from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad all from Ali ibn Asbat who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘When a city (Egypt) was mentioned, the Holy Prophet, said, ‘You must not eat in its pottery bowls; do not wash your head with its clay because it takes away one’s courage (protective feeling) and causes one to become a pimp.’”

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the water of Zamzam was whiter than milk, sweeter than honey and it flowed. It then oppressed other waters. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, made it to sink and a fountain of Saber e (aloe) to flow on it.’”

    وَ بِإِسْنَادِهِ قَالَ ذُكِرَتْ زَمْزَمُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَقَالَ أُجْرِيَ إِلَيْهَا عَيْنٌ مِنْ تَحْتِ الْحِجْرِ فَإِذَا غَلَبَ مَاءُ الْعَيْنِ عَذُبَ مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ .

    2. Through the same chain of narrators as that of the previous Hadith, the following is narrated: “Once, Zamzam was mentioned before abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. He (the Imam) said, ’A fountain from under the stone was made to flow on it. When the water of the fountain overwhelms it, water of Zamzam becomes sweet.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ خَيْرُ مَاءٍ عَلَى وَجْهِ الْأَرْضِ وَ شَرُّ مَاءٍ عَلَى وَجْهِ الْأَرْضِ مَاءُ بَرَهُوتَ الَّذِي بِحَضْرَمَوْتَ تَرِدُهُ هَامُ الْكُفَّارِ بِاللَّيْلِ .

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘The water of Zamzam is the best water on earth. The worst water on earth is the water of Barhut which is in Hadra maxvt upon which wandering unbelievers roam during the night.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ أَظُنُّهُ قَالَ كَائِناً مَا كَانَ .

    4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Tsma‘il ibn Jabir who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘The water of Zamzam is a cure for all illnesses,’ I think he said, ‘no matter whatever it may be.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ وَ غَيْرِهِ وَ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعاً عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَبَلَةَ عَنْ مُصَادِفٍ قَالَ اشْتَكَى رَجُلٌ مِنْ إِخْوَانِنَا بِمَكَّةَ حَتَّى سَقَطَ لِلْمَوْتِ فَلَقِينَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فِي الطَّرِيقِ فَقَالَ يَا مُصَادِفُ مَا فَعَلَ فُلَانٌ قُلْتُ تَرَكْتُهُ بِالْمَوْتِ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ أَمَا لَوْ كُنْتُ مَكَانَكُمْ لَسَقَيْتُهُ مِنْ مَاءِ الْمِيزَابِفَطَلَبْنَا عِنْدَ كُلِّ أَحَدٍ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ كَذَلِكَ إِذَا ارْتَفَعَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَأَرْعَدَتْ وَ أَبْرَقَتْ وَ أَمْطَرَتْ فَجِئْتُ إِلَى بَعْضِ مَنْ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَعْطَيْتُهُ دِرْهَماً وَ أَخَذْتُ قَدَحَهُ ثُمَّ أَخَذْتُ مِنْ مَاءِ الْمِيزَابِ فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهِ وَ سَقَيْتُهُ مِنْهُ وَ لَمْ أَبْرَحْ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ حَتَّى شَرِبَ سَوِيقاً وَ صَلَحَ وَ بَرَأَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ .

    6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja‘far and other and certain persons of our people from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah all from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from Yahya ibn al-Mubarak from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jabalah from Musadif who has said the following: “Once in Makkah one of our brothers (in belief) fell ill and was near death. We met abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, on the way and he (the Imam) asked, ‘O Musadif, how is so and so doing?’ I replied, ‘I left him for death, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Were I in your place I would make him drink water from al-Mizab.’ We then searched if anyone had such water but we did not find it. At this time, a cloud rose with thunder and lightning. I then went to those in al-Masjid, gave a dirham and took a bowl from someone, then took water from al-Mizab, took it to our patient, made him drink from it and I still was with him that he began drinking sawiq. He became well and in good health.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَقْطِينٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى وَ نَزَّلْنا مِنَ السَّماءِ ماءً مُبارَكاً قَالَ لَيْسَ مِنْ مَاءٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا وَ قَدْ خَالَطَهُ مَاءُ السَّمَاءِ .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ya’qub ibn Yazid from Ali ibn Yaqtin from ‘Amr ibn Ibrahim from Khalaf ibn Hammad from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once heard abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, about the meaning of the words of Allah, most High, ‘. . .We sent blessed water from the sky.’ (50:9) has said, there is no water on earth with which water of the sky is not mixed.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) اشْرَبُوا مَاءَ السَّمَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ يُطَهِّرُ الْبَدَنَ وَ يَدْفَعُ الْأَسْقَامَ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ يُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَ السَّماءِ ماءً لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ بِهِ وَ يُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمْ رِجْزَ الشَّيْطانِ وَ لِيَرْبِطَ عَلى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَ يُثَبِّتَ بِهِ الْأَقْدامَ .

    2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘You should drink of the water of the sky, it cleanses the body and removes illnesses as Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, “He sends water from the sky to cleanse you with it and remove the filth of Satan from you and to make your hearts firmly related and to make you steadfast.” (8:11)’”

    3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Imran ibn Musa from Ali ibn Asbat from his father who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Hail is not edible because Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, “. . . with it (hail) He causes whomever He wants to suffer.” (13:13)’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَا إِخَالُ أَحَداً يُحَنَّكُ بِمَاءِ الْفُرَاتِ إِلَّا أَحَبَّنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَ قَالَ ( عليه السلام ) مَا سُقِيَ أَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ مَاءَ الْفُرَاتِ إِلَّا لِأَمْرٍ مَا وَ قَالَ يُصَبُّ فِيهِ مِيزَابَانِ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ .

    1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from af-Husayn ibn ‘Uthman from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “In whoever ’s mouth water of Euphrates is dropped in childhood, I do not think he will not love us, people of the house.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘People of al-Kufah were not made to drink water of Euphrates except for a certain matter.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Two shoots of water fall in it (Euphrates) from the garden (paradise).”’

    2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from certain persons of our people who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Everyday several fluxes flow from the garden (paradise) into Euphrates.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنِ ابْنِ أُورَمَةَ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) نَهَرُكُمْ هَذَا يَعْنِي مَاءَ الْفُرَاتِ يَصُبُّ فِيهِ مِيزَابَانِ مِنْ مَيَازِيبِ الْجَنَّةِقَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) لَوْ كَانَ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَهُ أَمْيَالٌ لَأَتَيْنَاهُ وَ نَسْتَسْقِي بِهِ .

    3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn al-Husayn from ibn ‘Uramah from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘In your canal, this one, that is, Euphrates, there are two shoots of the shoots of the garden (paradise).’ He (the narrator) has said that abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Had there not been many miles in between we would drink water from it (Euphrates).”’

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) كَمْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَ بَيْنَ الْفُرَاتِ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ لَوْ كُنْتُ عِنْدَهُ لَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ آتِيَهُ طَرَفَيِ النَّهَارِ .

    4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn al-Husayn in a marfu‘ manner the following: “He (the narrator) has said that abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once asked, ‘What is the distance between you and Euphrates?’ I then informed him (the Imam) and he (the Imam) said, ‘Were I there near it I would go to it during both ends of the day.’”
