6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Salih ibn al-Sindiy from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from ‘ Arnr ibn abu Miqdam who has said the following: “I saw abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when a bowl of water was brought to him (the Imam) in which there was a patch of silver, removing it with his teeth.’”
7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Hassan from Musa ibn Bakr who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, Musa, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Utensils of gold and silver are of the assets of those who do not have certainty (in the laws of Allah).”’

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Harun ibn al-Jahm who has said the following: “We were with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in al-Hirah when he (the Imam) visited abu Ja‘far, al-Mansur, and one of his commanders had a circumcision feast for his child. Food was prepared and people were invited. Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was one of the people invited. When he was on the table to have food from a group of people near by, a man asked for water but a bowl of wine was brought for him. When the bowl reached the hand of the man abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, stood up to leave the table. He (the Imam) was asked about the reason for getting up and he (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Condemned is one who sits on a table where wine is served.’ In another Hadith it is said, ‘Condemned is he, condemned is he who sits on a table voluntarily where wine is served.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman from Jarrah al-Mad’iniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Whoever believes in Allah and the Day of Judgment, must not eat at a table where wine exists.’”
1. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shamir in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once in one of his speeches said, ‘After me there will come a year when the believing person will eat (an amount needed) for one stomach and the unbelievers will eat (as if needed) for seven stomachs.”’
2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad Muhammad ibn Sinan from ibn Muskan from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Overeating is undesirable.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) بِئْسَ الْعَوْنُ عَلَى الدِّينِ قَلْبٌ نَخِيبٌ وَ بَطْنٌ رَغِيبٌ وَ نَعْظٌ شَدِيدٌ .
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The most evil companion for religion is a coward heart, very spacious stomach and intense sexual desire.’”
4. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah from Wuhayb ibn Hafs from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, ‘O abu Muhammad, the stomach becomes excessive in its eating. A servant is nearest to Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, when his stomach is empty and light. The most hated condition of a servant to Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, is when his stomach is full.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) أَطْوَلُكُمْ جُشَاءً فِي الدُّنْيَا أَطْوَلُكُمْ جُوعاً فِي الْآخِرَةِ أَوْ قَالَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ .
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. Abu Dharr, may Allah grant him mercy, has said, that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The one among you with the longest belching will be hungry for the longest time on the Day of Judgment.’”
وَ بِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِذَا تَجَشَّأْتُمْ فَلَا تَرْفَعُوا جُشَاءَكُمْ .
6. Through the same chain of narrators as that of the previous Hadith the following is narrated: ‘Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘When you belch then do not make it loud.’”
7. Through the same chain of narrators as that of the previous Hadith the following is narrated from A number of our people from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa al-Yaqtiniy from ‘Ubayd Allah al-Dihqan from Durust from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Eating on a full stomach can cause leprosy (albinism).”’
8. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from ibn Sinan from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Every illness is because of overeating except, fever (infection) which enters the body.’”
9. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Sinan from Salih al-Niliy who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, hates overeating.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Children of Adam must eat to keep their backs straight. When one of you eats keep one-third of your stomach for food one-third for water and one-third for breathing and never become fat like pigs to be slaughtered.’”
10. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from certain persons of his people from abu ‘Ubaydah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When the stomach is full it rebels.’”
11. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Sinan from abu al-Jarud who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Nothing walks as hated in the sight of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, as a full stomach.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When one of you is invited for food do not allow your children to follow you, because in doing so he eats unlawfully and enters (the house of host) as a usurper.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu ‘Umayr from al-Husayn ibn Ahmad al-Minqariy from his maternal uncle who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘If one eats a food to which he is not invited he eats a piece of fire.”’
1. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from Zayd al- Shahham who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, never ate while leaning against something from the day Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent him as the Messenger of Allah to the day he passed away. He (the Messenger of Allah) ate like a servant and sat like a servant.’ I then asked, ‘Why did he do so?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He did so to show humbleness before Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious.”’
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ مُسْكَانَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ الصَّيْقَلِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ مَرَّتِ امْرَأَةٌ بَذِيَّةٌ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ هُوَ يَأْكُلُ وَ هُوَ جَالِسٌ عَلَى الْحَضِيضِ فَقَالَتْ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنَّكَ لَتَأْكُلُ أَكْلَ الْعَبْدِ وَ تَجْلِسُ جُلُوسَهُ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِنِّي عَبْدٌ وَ أَيُّ عَبْدٍ أَعْبَدُ مِنِّي قَالَتْ فَنَاوِلْنِي لُقْمَةً مِنْ طَعَامِكَ فَنَاوَلَهَا فَقَالَتْ لَا وَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا الَّذِي فِي فِيكَ فَأَخْرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) اللُّقْمَةَ مِنْ فِيهِ فَنَاوَلَهَا فَأَكَلَتْهَاقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَمَا أَصَابَهَا بَذَاءٌ حَتَّى فَارَقَتِ الدُّنْيَا .
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Safwan from ibn Muskan from al-Hassan al-Sayqal who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Once an indecent woman passed by the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when he was eating while sitting on the ground. She said, ‘O Muhammad, you eat like a slave and sit like one.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said to her, ‘I am a slave and where is that slave who is a better slave than I am.’ She then said, ‘Give me a morsel from you food.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) gave her a morsel but she said, ‘No, by Allah, (I will not accept) until you give from what is in your mouth.’ The Messenger of Allah then took the morsel out of his mouth and gave it to her and she ate it.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that she thereafter was never affected by indecency until she left this world.’”
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from abu al-Mighra’ from Harun ibn Kharijah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would eat like a slave, sit like one and knew that he was a slave (of Allah).”’
4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who eats leaning backward. Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘No, one must not lean forward also.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبَصْرِيِّ عَنِ الْفُضَيْلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ قَالَ كَانَ عَبَّادٌ الْبَصْرِيُّ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَأْكُلُ فَوَضَعَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَدَهُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبَّادٌ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَ مَا تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) نَهَى عَنْ هَذَا فَرَفَعَ يَدَهُ فَأَكَلَ ثُمَّ أَعَادَهَا أَيْضاً فَقَالَ لَهُ أَيْضاً فَرَفَعَهَا ثُمَّ أَكَلَ فَأَعَادَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبَّادٌ أَيْضاً فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) لَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) عَنْ هَذَا قَطُّ .
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from abu ’Isma‘il al-Basriy from al-Fudayl ibn Yasar who has said the following: “‘Abbad al-Basriy was once with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, while eating, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, placed his hand on the ground. ‘Abbad said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well. Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah prohibited this (manner of sitting).’ He (the Imam) raised his hand, ate, and placed his hand on the ground again. ‘Abbad said what he had said before. He (the Imam) raised his hand, then ate and placed his hand on the ground again and ‘Abbad said what he had said before. Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘No, by Allah, the Messenger of Allah never prohibited it.’”
أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ النَّضْرِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شِمْرٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَأْكُلُ أَكْلَ الْعَبْدِ وَ يَجْلِسُ جِلْسَةَ الْعَبْدِ وَ كَانَ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَأْكُلُ عَلَى الْحَضِيضِ وَ يَنَامُ عَلَى الْحَضِيضِ .
6. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shamir from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would eat like a slave and sit like one. The Messenger of Allah would eat while sitting on the ground and sleep on the ground.’”
7. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Ahmad ibn ‘A’idh from abu Khadijah who has said the following: “Once Bashir al-Dahhan asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when I was present, saying, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah eat while leaning against something to his right or left?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah never ate while leaning against something on his right or left, he (the Messenger of Allah) however, sat like slaves.’ I then asked, ‘Why did he do so?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He did so to express humbleness before Allah.’”
8. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar, from Safwan from Mu‘alla’ ibn ‘Uthman from Mu‘alla’ ibn Khunayth who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Holy Prophet never ate while leaning against something, from the time Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent him as His Messenger. He (the Messenger of Allah) disliked sitting as kings, but we are not able to do so.’”
قَالَ وَ قَالَ مَا أَكَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ هُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ قَطُّ .
9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy ibn abu Sha’bah who has said the following: “Ibn abu Ayyub informed me that abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would eat while sitting in a cross-legged manner. He (the narrator) has said that he saw abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ate while leaning. He has said, that he has said, ‘The Messenger of Allah never ate while leaning against something.’” [Note: This account appears to be the words of narrators and not the words of the Imam]
10. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When one of you sits for food, he must sit like slaves and must not place one leg over the other or sit in a cross-legged manner; it is the kind of sitting for which Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, hates and abhors one who sits in such manner.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman from Jarrah al-Mada’iniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that he dislikes for a man to eat with his left hand or drink with it and take something with it.”’
2. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from al-Husayn, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not eat with your left hand if you can.’”
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who eats or drinks with his left hand. He (the Imam) said, ‘He must not eat with his left hand and must not drink with his left hand or lift up anything with it.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) قَبْلَ الْغَدَاةِ وَ مَعَهُ كِسْرَةٌ قَدْ غَمَسَهَا فِي اللَّبَنِ وَ هُوَ يَأْكُلُ وَ يَمْشِي وَ بِلَالٌ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) .
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, came out in the morning with a piece of bread in his hand which he had immersed in milk. He (the Messenger of Allah) walked while eating and Bilal said ‘Iqamah for Salat (prayer). He (the Messenger of Allah) then performed Salat (prayer) with people.”’
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَمَّنْ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْعَزْرَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ الرَّجُلُ وَ هُوَ يَمْشِي كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ.
2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from the one who narrated to him from ‘ Abd al- Rahman al-‘Arzamiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘It is not unlawful if a man eats while walking. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, ate while walking.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ غِيَاثِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) طَعَامُ الْوَاحِدِ يَكْفِي الِاثْنَيْنِ وَ طَعَامُ الِاثْنَيْنِ يَكْفِي الثَّلَاثَةَ وَ طَعَامُ الثَّلَاثَةِ يَكْفِي الْأَرْبَعَةَ .

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Food for one is sufficient for two, food for two is sufficient for three and food for three is sufficient for four people.”’
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘A food with four characteristics is complete, that it is lawful, numerousness of hands on it, mention of the name of Allah on it, and praise of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, at its end.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn Faddal from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has never made a people to undergo suffering while eating food. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, is honorable. He does not give people sustenance, then make them to undergo suffering before they finish eating their food.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from Ibrahim al-Karkhiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If a believing man invites me for food that consists of only a hand of sheep, I accept it and that is of religion. If an idolater or hypocrite invites me for food that consists of a whole camel, I do not accept and that is of religion. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, disdains one’s receiving gifts from pagans and hypocrites and their food.’”
2. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Muthanna’ al-Hannat from Ishaq ibn Yazid who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is of the rights of a Muslim on a Muslim to accept his invitation.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Ibrahim ibn ‘Umar from Mu‘alla’ ibn Khunayth who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is of obligatory rights of a believer that you accept his invitation.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Mahbub from “Amr ibn abu al-Miqdam from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, advised, ‘Those of my followers present must inform those absent to accept the invitation of a Muslim even if it is five miles away, because it is of religion.’”
5. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from ibn Faddal from Tha‘labah ibn Maymun from ‘Abd al-’A‘la’ Mawla Ale Sam from Mu‘alla’ ibn Khunayth who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is of the obligatory rights of a Muslim on his brother (in faith) to accept his invitation.’”
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Accept an invitation for a wedding and circumcision; but do not accept for Khafd (lowering) girls.’”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْقَاشَانِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ مُقَاتِلٍ الْمَدِينِيِّ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَانَ فِي بَعْضِ مَغَازِيهِ فَمَرَّ بِهِ رَكْبٌ وَ هُوَ يُصَلِّي فَوَقَفُوا عَلَى أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ سَاءَلُوهُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ دَعَوْا وَ أَثْنَوْا وَ قَالُوا لَوْ لَا أَنَّا عِجَالٌ لَانْتَظَرْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَأَقْرِءُوهُ مِنَّا السَّلَامَ وَ مَضَوْافَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مُغْضَباً ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ يَقِفُ عَلَيْكُمُ الرَّكْبُ وَ يَسْأَلُونَكُمْ عَنِّي وَ يُبَلِّغُونِّي السَّلَامَ وَ لَا تَعْرِضُونَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْغَدَاءَ لَيَعِزُّ عَلَى قَوْمٍ فِيهِمْ خَلِيلِي جَعْفَرٌ أَنْ يَجُوزُوهُ حَتَّى يَتَغَدَّوْا عِنْدَهُ .
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qashaniy from abu Ayyub Sulayman ibn Muqatil al-Madiniy from Dawud ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Ja‘fariy from his father who has said the following: “During one of his expeditions, the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was performing Salat (prayer) when a caravan passed by. They stopped by the companions of the Messenger of Allah and asked them about him (the Messenger of Allah), prayed, praised and said, ‘Were we not in a hurry we would have waited for the Messenger of Allah, so convey our Salam (the phrase of offering greeting of peace) to him (the Messenger of Allah); and they left. The Messenger of Allah became angry and said to them, ‘A caravan stops by and asks you about me. They ask you to convey their Salam (the phrase of offering greeting of peace) to me but you do not show any courtesy and invite them for food. Had beloved Ja‘far been present, he would not send the people away without inviting them for food.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from a number of our people who have narrated in a marfu‘ manner the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When your brother (in belief) comes to your house, offer him food, if he did not want, then offer him water and if he did not want water offer him wudu (to wash his face or perfume).’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مِنْ تَكْرِمَةِ الرَّجُلِ لِأَخِيهِ أَنْ يَقْبَلَ تُحْفَتَهُ وَ أَنْ يُتْحِفَهُ بِمَا عِنْدَهُ وَ لَا يَتَكَلَّفَ لَهُ شَيْئاً وَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِنِّي لَا أُحِبُّ الْمُتَكَلِّفِينَ .
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Of a man’s honoring his brother (in belief) is to accept his gift and present him a gift of what he has and should not overburden himself.’ The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘I do not like those who overburden and strain themselves.’”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Jamil ibn Darraj who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘A believing man should not behave formally toward his brother (in belief). One will not know which is stranger; the one who overburdens his brother to be formal or the one who behaves unnecessarily formal with his brother (in belief).”’
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Safwan ibn Yahya who has said the following: “Once ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan came to me and asked, ‘Do you have anything?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I have something.’ I then sent my son and gave him two dirham to buy meat and eggs. He asked, ‘Where did you send your son?’ I then informed him about it. He said, ‘Call him back. Do you have any oil?’ I replied, ‘Yes, we have oil.’ He then said, ‘Bring it; I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, “A man who looks down on what his brother (in belief) brings for him is ruined and so also is one who looks down on what he brings for his brother (in belief).”’
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn Hadid from Murazim ibn Hakim from the one who has narrated it in a marfu‘ manner saying the following: “Harith al-A‘war once came to ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and said, ‘O ’Amir al- Mu’minin, I wish you grant me the honor of having food with me. ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, said, ‘I accept your invitation, provided, that you do not overburden yourself by acting formally’. He (the Imam) went to his house. Harith brought a piece of bread and ’Amir al-Mu’minin began to eat. Al-Harith said, ‘I have a few dirham’ and he showed them. They were in his sleeves. ‘If you give permission I like to buy something for you besides these pieces of bread.’ ’Amir al- Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘This is what is in your house (so it is sufficient).”’
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘A man who looks down on what he has for the guest is ruined.’”
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If your brother (in belief) comes to you, then serve him with whatever you have, but if you invite him then you can act formally (as you like).”’

Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muskan from Muhammad al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about this verse, ’It is not unlawful for you to eat in your houses, in the houses of your fathers. . . (24:61) and I asked what is the meaning of, ‘or your friend’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘That by Allah is the house of his friend where he can eat without his permission.’”
