    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كُلُوا الْأُتْرُجَّ بَعْدَ الطَّعَامِ فَإِنَّ آلَ مُحَمَّدٍ ( عليهم السلام ) يَفْعَلُونَ ذَلِكَ .

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid, from al-Qasim ibn Yahya, from his grandfather, al- Hassan ibn Rashid, from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Eat citron after food; because Ale Muhammad, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, do so.’”

  2. 11719Al-Kafi

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْخُبْزُ الْيَابِسُ يَهْضِمُ الْأُتْرُجَّ .

    4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Dry bread helps one to digests citron.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عُمَرَ الْيَمَانِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّهُمْ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ الْأُتْرُجَّ عَلَى الرِّيقِ أَجْوَدُ مَا يَكُونُ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنْ كَانَ قَبْلَ الطَّعَامِ خَيْرٌ فَهُوَ بَعْدَ الطَّعَامِ خَيْرٌ وَ خَيْرٌ وَ أَجْوَدُ .

    5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Ibrahim ibn ‘Umar al-Yamaniy who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘They think that citron before breakfast is in its best.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Before food it is good after food it better and best.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْقَاسَانِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْمَدِينِيِّ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَانَ يُعْجِبُهُ النَّظَرُ إِلَى الْأُتْرُجِّ الْأَخْضَرِ وَ التُّفَّاحِ الْأَحْمَرِ .

    6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qasaniy from abu Ayyub al-Madiniy from Sulayman ibn Ja‘far al-Ja‘fariy who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, liked to look at the green citron and red apple.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ مُوسَى الصَّنْعَانِيِّ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) بِمِنًى وَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الثَّانِي ( عليه السلام ) عَلَى فَخِذِهِ وَ هُوَ يُقَشِّرُ لَهُ مَوْزاً وَ يُطْعِمُهُ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from Muhammad ibn abu ‘Umayr from Yahya ibn Musa, San’aniy who has said the following: “I once visited abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in Mina and abu Ja‘far, al-Thaniy was in his lap. He (the Imam) peeled banana and fed him (abu Ja‘far, al-Thaniy).”’

    أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ مَوْزاً فَأَكَلْتُهُ .

    2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from abu ‘Usamah who has said the following: “I once visited abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. He brought banana nearer to me and I ate.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى الصَّنْعَانِيِّ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) وَ هُوَ بِمَكَّةَ وَ هُوَ يُقَشِّرُ مَوْزاً وَ يُطْعِمُهُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ هَذَا الْمَوْلُودُ الْمُبَارَكُ قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا يَحْيَى هَذَا الْمَوْلُودُ الَّذِي لَمْ يُولَدْ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ مِثْلُهُ مَوْلُودٌ أَعْظَمُ بَرَكَةً عَلَى شِيعَتِنَا مِنْهُ .

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad Ali ibn Asbat from Yahya al-San’aniy who has said the following: “I once visited abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in Makkah. He (the Imam) peeled banana and fed it to abu Ja‘far, al-Thaniy, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, is this the blessed newborn?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, O Yahya, this is the new born, the like of whom in greatness of blessing is not born in Islam for our Shi ’a.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ الْغُبَيْرَاءُ لَحْمُهُ يُنْبِتُ اللَّحْمَ وَ عَظْمُهُ يُنْبِتُ الْعَظْمَ وَ جِلْدُهُ يُنْبِتُ الْجِلْدَ وَ مَعَ ذَلِكَ [فَإِنَّهُ] يُسَخِّنُ الْكُلْيَتَيْنِ وَ يَدْبُغُ الْمَعِدَةَ وَ هُوَ أَمَانٌ مِنَ الْبَوَاسِيرِ وَ التَّقْتِيرِ وَ يُقَوِّي السَّاقَيْنِ وَ يَقْمَعُ عِرْقَ الْجُذَامِ .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Musa from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali from his father from ibn Bukayr who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘The flesh of Rowan, mountain ash berry grows flesh, its bones grow bones and its peels grow skin, besides it warms up kidneys, tans (cleanses) the stomach and it is protection against hemorrhoid and al-Taqtir (intense anger, stint). It brings firmness to the legs and uproots the vein of leprosy.”’

  9. 11726Al-Kafi

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ يَاسِرٍ الْخَادِمِ عَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْبِطِّيخُ عَلَى الرِّيقِ يُورِثُ الْفَالِجَ نَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْهُ .

    1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Yasar al-Khadim who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Eating melons before breakfast causes paralysis, may Allah grant us protection against it!”’

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَأْكُلُ الرُّطَبَ بِالْخِرْبِزِ .

    2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from certain persons of his people who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would eat fresh dates with melons.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَأْكُلُ الْبِطِّيخَ بِالتَّمْرِ .

    3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would eat melons with dates.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يُعْجِبُهُ الرُّطَبُ بِالْخِرْبِزِ .

    4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, liked fresh dates with melons.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الدِّهْقَانِ عَنْ دُرُسْتَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَكَلَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الْبِطِّيخَ بِالسُّكَّرِ وَ أَكَلَ الْبِطِّيخَ بِالرُّطَبِ .

    5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Dihqan from Durust from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, ate melons with sugar. He (the Messenger of Allah) ate melons with fresh dates.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ هَارُونَ عَنْ مُوَفَّقٍ الْمَدِينِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ الْمَاضِي ( عليه السلام ) يَوْماً فَأَجْلَسَنِي لِلْغَدَاءِ فَلَمَّا جَاءُوا بِالْمَائِدَةِ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا بَقْلٌ فَأَمْسَكَ يَدَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلْغُلَامِ أَ مَا عَلِمْتَ أَنِّي لَا آكُلُ عَلَى مَائِدَةٍ لَيْسَ فِيهَا خُضْرَةٌ فَأْتِنِي بِالْخُضْرَةِ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ الْغُلَامُ فَجَاءَ بِالْبَقْلِ فَأَلْقَاهُ عَلَى الْمَائِدَةِ فَمَدَّ يَدَهُ ( عليه السلام ) حِينَئِذٍ وَ أَكَلَ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Harun from Muwaffaq al-Madiniy from his father from his grandfather who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Madiy, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once sent for me and he made me to stay for lunch. When they brought the table-spread with food there were no herbs in it. He (the Imam) held his hand and said to the boy, ’Did you not know that I do not eat until there are green herbs on the table-spread, so bring for me fresh herbs. 5 The boy went, brought fresh herbs and placed it on the table-spread then he (the Imam) extended his hand and ate his lunch.’”

  15. 11732Al-Kafi

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَنَانٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَلَى الْمَائِدَةِ فَمَالَ عَلَى الْبَقْلِ وَ امْتَنَعْتُ أَنَا مِنْهُ لِعِلَّةٍ كَانَتْ بِي فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ يَا حَنَانُ أَ مَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) لَمْ يُؤْتَ بِطَبَقٍ إِلَّا وَ عَلَيْهِ بَقْلٌ قُلْتُ وَ لِمَ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ لِأَنَّ قُلُوبَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ خَضِرَةٌ وَ هِيَ تَحِنُّ إِلَى أَشْكَالِهَا .

    2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hanan who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, on the table-spread of food and he (the Imam) ate fresh herbs but I abstained because of a certain illness. He (the Imam) turned to me and said, ‘O Hanan, did you not know that whenever a package of food was brought to ’Amir al-Mu’minin it neccessarily had herbs in it?’ I then asked, T pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, why did it have to be as such?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is because the hearts of the believers are fresh, green and they incline to what is similar to it.’”

  16. 11733Al-Kafi

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنِ الْمُثَنَّى بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنْ بَاتَ وَ فِي جَوْفِهِ سَبْعُ طَاقَاتٍ مِنَ الْهِنْدَبَاءِ أَمِنَ مِنَ الْقُولَنْجِ لَيْلَتَهُ تِلْكَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from al-Muthanna’ ibn al-Walid who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’If one goes to sleep with seven leaves of endives in his belly he will remain safe from colic (colitis) pain that night by the will of Allah.’”

    عَنْهُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ جَدِّهِ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ السِّمْطِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكْثُرَ مَاؤُهُ وَ وُلْدُهُ فَلْيُدْمِنْ أَكْلَ الْهِنْدَبَاءِ .

    2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Khalid ibn Muhammad from his grandfather, Sufyan ibn al-Simt who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’If one likes to increase his seed and children he should eat endives very often.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكْثُرَ مَاؤُهُ وَ وُلْدُهُ فَلْيُكْثِرْ أَكْلَ الْهِنْدَبَاءِ .

    3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’If one likes to increase his seed and children he should eat endives very often.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ نِعْمَ الْبَقْلُ الْهِنْدَبَاءُ وَ لَيْسَ مِنْ وَرَقَةٍ إِلَّا وَ عَلَيْهَا قَطْرَةٌ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَكُلُوهَا وَ لَا تَنْفُضُوهَا عِنْدَ أَكْلِهَا قَالَ وَ كَانَ أَبِي ( عليه السلام ) يَنْهَانَا أَنْ نَنْفُضَهُ إِذَا أَكَلْنَاهُ .

    4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The endive is a very good herb. On every one of its leaves there is a drop of paradise, so you should eat it and do not shake it off when eating.’ He (the Imam) has said, ’My father, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, prohibited us from shaking off when we were eating it.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْعَدَةَ بْنِ صَدَقَةَ عَنْ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْهِنْدَبَاءُ سَيِّدُ الْبُقُولِ .

    5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Harun ibn Muslim from Mas’adah ibn Sadaqah from Ziyad who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The endive is the master of herbs.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ جَمِيعاً عَنِ الْحَجَّالِ عَنْ ثَعْلَبَةَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ عَلَيْكَ بِالْهِنْدَبَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ يَزِيدُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَ يُحَسِّنُ الْوَلَدَ وَ هُوَ حَارٌّ لَيِّنٌ يَزِيدُ فِي الْوَلَدِ الذُّكُورَةَ .

    6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad and Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar all from al-Hajj al from Tha’labah from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said, ‘You must eat endives because it increases one’s seed and forms children well. It is hot, soft and increases male children.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ الْحَذَّاءِ الْجَبَلِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَيْضِ قَالَ تَغَدَّيْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ عَلَى الْخِوَانِ بَقْلٌ وَ مَعَنَا شَيْخٌ فَجَعَلَ يَتَنَكَّبُ الْهِنْدَبَاءَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَمَّا أَنْتُمْ فَتَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ الْهِنْدَبَاءَ بَارِدَةٌ وَ لَيْسَتْ كَذَلِكَ وَ لَكِنَّهَا مُعْتَدِلَةٌ وَ فَضْلُهَا عَلَى الْبُقُولِ كَفَضْلِنَا عَلَى النَّاسِ .

    7. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from abu Sulayman al-Hadhdha’ al-Jabaliy from Muhammad ibn al-Fayd who has said the following: “I once had lunch with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and on the table-spread there were herbs and with us: there was an old man who avoided endive. Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘You think that endive is of cold nature, in fact, it is not the way you think it is. It is balanced and its excellence over other herbs is like our excellence over other people.’”*

    عَنْهُ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنِ الْأَصَمِّ عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) كُلُوا الْهِنْدَبَاءَ فَمَا مِنْ صَبَاحٍ إِلَّا وَ تَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهَا قَطْرَةٌ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَإِذَا أَكَلْتُمُوهَا فَلَا تَنْفُضُوهَاقَالَ وَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ أَبِي ( عليه السلام ) يَنْهَانَا أَنْ نَنْفُضَهَا إِذَا أَكَلْنَاهَا .

    8. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from certain persons of our people from al-Asamm from Shu’ayb from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘You should eat endives. Every morning one drop descends on it from paradise and when you eat it do not shake it off.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘My father, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, prohibited us from shaking off when we ate endives.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ الْهِنْدَبَاءُ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ دَاءٍ مَا مِنْ دَاءٍ فِي جَوْفِ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا قَمَعَهُ الْهِنْدَبَاءُقَالَ وَ دَعَا بِهِ يَوْماً لِبَعْضِ الْحَشَمِ وَ كَانَ تَأْخُذُهُ الْحُمَّى وَ الصُّدَاعُ فَأَمَرَ أَنْ يُدَقَّ وَ صَيَّرَهُ عَلَى قِرْطَاسٍ وَ صَبَّ عَلَيْهِ دُهْنَ الْبَنَفْسَجِ وَ وَضَعَهُ عَلَى جَبِينِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّهُ يَذْهَبُ بِالْحُمَّى وَ يَنْفَعُ مِنَ الصُّدَاعِ وَ يَذْهَبُ بِهِ .

    9. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il who has said the following: “I once heard al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘The endive is cure for a thousand illnesses. There is no illness in the belly of the sons of Adam that endives cannot dispel.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘One day he asked for it because one of the servants suffered from fever and headache. He ordered to make it thin, spread it on a piece of paper then a certain amount of viola oil was poured on it and placed on his forehead. He (the Imam) then said, ‘This removes fever and is beneficial in headaches and to dispel it off.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِي يَحْيَى الْوَاسِطِيِّ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ بَقْلَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الْهِنْدَبَاءُ وَ بَقْلَةُ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) الْبَاذَرُوجُ وَ بَقْلَةُ فَاطِمَةَ ( عليها السلام ) الْفَرْفَخُ .

    10. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from abu Yahya al-Wasitiy from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The endive is the herb of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. The herb of ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, is al-Badharuj (sweet basil) and the herb of Fatimah, ‘Alayha al-Salam, is al -Farfakh (purslane).

    1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, liked sweet basil. 5 ”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ نُوحٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ حَضَرَ مَعَ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلِ ( عليه السلام ) الْمَائِدَةَ فَدَعَا بِالْبَاذَرُوجِ وَ قَالَ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْتَفْتِحَ بِهِ الطَّعَامَ فَإِنَّهُ يَفْتَحُ السُّدَدَ وَ يُشَهِّي الطَّعَامَ وَ يَذْهَبُ بِالسُّبُلِ وَ مَا أُبَالِي إِذَا أَنَا افْتَتَحْتُ بِهِ مَا أَكَلْتُ بَعْدَهُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ فَإِنِّي لَا أَخَافُ دَاءً وَ لَا غَائِلَةًفَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا مِنَ الْغَدَاءِ دَعَا بِهِ أَيْضاً وَ رَأَيْتُهُ يَتَتَبَّعُ وَرَقَهُ عَلَى الْمَائِدَةِ وَ يَأْكُلُهُ وَ يُنَاوِلُنِي مِنْهُ وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ اخْتِمْ طَعَامَكَ بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يُمْرِئُ مَا قَبْلُ كَمَا يُشَهِّي مَا بَعْدُ وَ يَذْهَبُ بِالثِّقَلِ وَ يُطَيِّبُ الْجُشَاءَ وَ النَّكْهَةَ .

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ayyub ibn Nuh who has said the following: “I once was with abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal on a table of food and he asked for sweet basil saying, ‘I like to begin my food with it because it opens up blockages, and strengthens one’s appetite for food and takes away al-Subul (the paths). If I begin my food with it I then do not mind what I eat thereafter of food; I will not be afraid of illness or calamity.’ When we completed eating, he (the Imam) asked for it again and I saw him searching on the table-spread for its leaves. He (the Imam) ate them and gave to me saying, ‘Finish eating with this; it makes what you ate pleasant, strengthens your appetite for what you may eat thereafter, takes away heaviness and makes burps pleasant as well as one’s breath.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنْ إِشْكِيبِ بْنِ عَبْدَةَ الْهَمْدَانِيِّ بِإِسْنَادٍ لَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ قَالَ الْحَوْكُ بَقْلَةُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ أَمَا إِنَّ فِيهِ ثَمَانَ خِصَالٍ يُمْرِئُ وَ يَفْتَحُ السُّدَدَ وَ يُطَيِّبُ الْجُشَاءَ وَ يُطَيِّبُ النَّكْهَةَ وَ يُشَهِّي الطَّعَامَ وَ يَسُلُّ الدَّاءَ وَ هُوَ أَمَانٌ مِنَ الْجُذَامِ إِذَا اسْتَقَرَّ فِي جَوْفِ الْإِنْسَانِ قَمَعَ الدَّاءَ كُلَّهُ .

    4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Musa from ’Ishkib ibn ‘Abdah al-Hamadaniy through his chain of narrators who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Al-Hawk (sweet basil) is the herb of the Prophets. There are eight qualities in it; It is pleasant, opens up blockages, makes burping pleasant, freshens one’s breath, increases appetite for food, pulls out illness and it is protection against leprosy and when it settles down in one’s stomach it suppresses illness.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ بَكْرٍ قَالَ اشْتَكَى غُلَامٌ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَقِيلَ بِهِ طُحَالٌ فَقَالَ أَطْعِمُوهُ الْكُرَّاثَ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَأَطْعَمْنَاهُ فَقَعَدَ الدَّمُ ثُمَّ بَرَأَ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Hassan from Musa ibn Bakr who has said the following: “Once, a slave of abu al-Hassan complained of illness. He (the Imam) asked about him and it was said that he has spleen trouble. He (the Imam) said, Teed him leeks for three days.’ We fed him, blood formed and he became well.’”

    عَنْهُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ رَأَى أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَأْكُلُ الْكُرَّاثَ فِي الْمَشَارَةِ وَ يَغْسِلُهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَ يَأْكُلُهُ .

    2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith has said the following: “One who had seen abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, narrated to me that abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, ate leeks from the carriage from the farm and washed it with water.’”

    سَهْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقْطَعُ الْكُرَّاثَ بِأُصُولِهِ فَيَغْسِلُهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَ يَأْكُلُهُ .

    3. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Walid from Yunus ibn Ya’qub who has said the following: “I saw abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, cut leeks from their roots, wash with water and eat.”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْهَمَذَانِيِّ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ فُرَاتِ بْنِ أَحْنَفَ قَالَ سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْكُرَّاثِ فَقَالَ كُلْهُ فَإِنَّ فِيهِ أَرْبَعَ خِصَالٍ يُطَيِّبُ النَّكْهَةَ وَ يَطْرُدُ الرِّيَاحَ وَ يَقْطَعُ الْبَوَاسِيرَ وَ هُوَ أَمَانٌ مِنَ الْجُذَامِ لِمَنْ أَدْمَنَ عَلَيْهِ .

    4. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from his father from Muhammad ibn Ali al-Hamadaniy from ‘Amr ibn ‘Isa from Furat ibn Ahnaf who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about leeks and he (the Imam) said, Tat it because it has four qualities. It refreshes one’s breath, dispels gases, cuts down hemorrhoids and it is protection against leprosy for one who eats it very often.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى أَوْ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ ذُكِرَتِ الْبُقُولُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَقَالَ كُلُوا الْكُرَّاثَ فَإِنَّ مَثَلَهُ فِي الْبُقُولِ كَمَثَلِ الْخُبْزِ فِي سَائِرِ الطَّعَامِ أَوْ قَالَ الْإِدَامِ.

    5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa or others from ‘Abd al-Rahman from Hammad ibn Zakariya who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that herbs were mentioned before the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, he (the Messenger of Allah) said, Tat leeks because its likeness in herbs is like bread in other foods’ or he said ‘sauce.’” Uncertainty is from Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub.

    عَنْهُ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي دَاوُدَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ رَأَى أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) بِخُرَاسَانَ يَأْكُلُ الْكُرَّاثَ مِنَ الْبُسْتَانِ كَمَا هُوَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ فِيهِ السَّمَادَ فَقَالَ ( عليه السلام ) لَا تَعَلَّقُ بِهِ مِنْهُ شَيْ‏ءٌ وَ هُوَ جَيِّدٌ لِلْبَوَاسِيرِ .

    6. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Dawud ibn abu Dawud who has said the following: “A man had seen abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in Khurasan eating leeks from the garden as it was and it was said to him (the Imam), ‘There is fertilizer with it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not stick to it and it is very good for hemorrhoids.’”

    عَنْهُ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ حَنَانِ بْنِ سَدِيرٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَلَى الْمَائِدَةِ فَمِلْتُ عَلَى الْهِنْدَبَاءِ فَقَالَ لِي يَا حَنَانُ لِمَ لَا تَأْكُلُ الْكُرَّاثَ قُلْتُ لِمَا جَاءَ عَنْكُمْ مِنَ الرِّوَايَةِ فِي الْهِنْدَبَاءِ فَقَالَ وَ مَا الَّذِي جَاءَ عَنَّا قُلْتُ إِنَّهُ قِيلَ عَنْكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ قُلْتُمْ إِنَّهُ يُقَطَّرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ قَطْرَةٌ قَالَ فَقَالَ ( عليه السلام ) فَعَلَى الْكُرَّاثِ إِذَنْ سَبْعُ قَطَرَاتٍ قُلْتُ فَكَيْفَ آكُلُهُ قَالَ اقْطَعْ أُصُولَهُ وَ اقْذِفْ بِرُءُوسِهِ .

    7. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from certain persons of his people from Hanan ibn Sadir who has said the following: “I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, around the table-spread of food. I reached for the endives and he (the Imam) said to me, ‘O Hanan, why do you not eat leeks?’ I replied, ‘It is because of what is narrated from you in the Hadith about endives.’ He (the Imam) then asked, ‘What is narrated about it from us?’ I replied, ‘It is narrated from you as having said, “Every day one drop falls on it.’” He (the Imam) said, ‘On leeks it is seven drops.’ I then asked, ‘How should I eat it?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Cut their roots and throw away their heads.’”

    8. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from certain persons of his people in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would eat leeks with not so finely powdered salt.’”

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa or others from Qutaybah ibn Mehran from Hammad ibn Zakariya who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You must eat celery because it is the food of Elias, al-Yasa‘ and Usha‘ ibn Nun (names of Israelite prophets).”’

    عَنْهُ عَنْ نُوحِ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَقْطِينٍ فِيمَا أَعْلَمُ عَنْ نَادِرٍ الْخَادِمِ قَالَ ذَكَرَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) الْكَرَفْسَ فَقَالَ أَنْتُمْ تَشْتَهُونَهُ وَ لَيْسَ مِنْ دَابَّةٍ إِلَّا وَ هِيَ تَحْتَكُّ بِهِ .

    2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith Nuh ibn Shu’ayb al-Naysaburiy from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali Yaqtin as I know from Nadir al-Khadim who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once mentioned celery and said, ‘You desire to eat celery and there is no living thing that does not rub against it.’” (It can be for or against it depending on if, they rub for cure or to leave poison).

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الدِّهْقَانِ عَنْ دُرُسْتَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَكْلُ التُّفَّاحِ وَ الْكُزْبُرَةِ يُورِثُ النِّسْيَانَ .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Dihqan from Durust from Ibrahim from ‘Abd al- Hamid who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Eating apple and coriander causes forgetfulness.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ فُرَاتِ بْنِ أَحْنَفَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ لَيْسَ عَلَى وَجْهِ الْأَرْضِ بَقْلَةٌ أَشْرَفُ وَ لَا أَنْفَعُ مِنَ الْفَرْفَخِ وَ هُوَ بَقْلَةُ فَاطِمَةَ ( عليها السلام )ثُمَّ قَالَ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ بَنِي أُمَيَّةَ هُمْ سَمَّوْهَا بَقْلَةَ الْحَمْقَاءِ بُغْضاً لَنَا وَ عَدَاوَةً لِفَاطِمَةَ ( عليها السلام ) .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa, from Furat ibn Ahnaf who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ’On the face of earth there is no herb more beneficial and graceful than al-Farfakh (purslane) and it is the herb of Fatimah, ‘Alayha al-Salam .’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘May Allah condemn banu ’Umayyah who named it foolish herb due to their animosity toward Fatimah, Alayhi al-Salam.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَطِئَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الرَّمْضَاءَ فَأَحْرَقَتْهُ فَوَطِئَ عَلَى الرِّجْلَةِ وَ هِيَ الْبَقْلَةُ الْحَمْقَاءُ فَسَكَنَ عَنْهُ حَرُّ الرَّمْضَاءِ فَدَعَا لَهَا وَ كَانَ يُحِبُّهَا ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ يَقُولُ مِنْ بَقْلَةٍ مَا أَبْرَكَهَا .

    2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, set foot on a sun- baked ground which burned him. He (the Messenger of Allah) then set foot on purslane and it calmed down the heat and he (the Messenger of Allah) prayed for the herb. He liked it and would say, ‘How blessed an herb it is!”’

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبِي حَفْصٍ الْأَبَّارِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْخَسِّ فَإِنَّهُ يُصَفِّي الدَّمَ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘ Abd Allah from his father from certain persons of his people from abu Hafs ibn al-Abbar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must eat lettuce because it cleanses blood.’”

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ya’qub ibn ‘Amir from a man who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Al-Sadab (Rue herb of grace) increases the power of understanding.’”

    عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الْهَمْدَانِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ أَوْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) الْوَهْمُ مِنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُوسَى قَالَ ذُكِرَ السَّدَابُ فَقَالَ أَمَا إِنَّ فِيهِ مَنَافِعَ زِيَادَةٌ فِي الْعَقْلِ وَ تَوْفِيرٌ فِي الدِّمَاغِ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ يُنَتِّنُ مَاءَ الظَّهْرِ .وَ رُوِيَ أَنَّهُ جَيِّدٌ لِوَجَعِ الْأُذُنِ .

    2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Musa from Ali ibn al-Hassan al-Hamadaniy from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far, or abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, -uncertainty is from Muhammad ibn Musa- has said, ‘Once al-Sadab was mentioned and He (the Imam) said, ‘There are benefits in it. It increases the power of understanding, increases in the brain except that it putrefies one’s back’s water.’ It is narrated that it is very good for ear ache.”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى وَ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ قُتَيْبَةَ الْأَعْشَى أَوْ قَالَ قُتَيْبَةَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَا تَضْلَعُ الرَّجُلُ مِنَ الْجِرْجِيرِ بَعْدَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ فَبَاتَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ إِلَّا وَ نَفْسُهُ تُنَازِعُهُ إِلَى الْجُذَامِ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa and others from Qutaybah al- A’sha’ or he said, Qutaybah ibn Mehran from Hammad ibn Zakariya who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one fills himself up with watercress after performing Salat (prayer) of al-‘Isha’ he will spend the night while his soul invites him to leprosy. 5 ”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنْ أَكَلَ الْجِرْجِيرَ بِاللَّيْلِ ضَرَبَ عَلَيْهِ عِرْقُ الْجُذَامِ مِنْ أَنْفِهِ وَ بَاتَ يُنْزَفُ الدَّمُ .

    2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one eats watercress during the night the vein of leprosy will hit him from his nose and blood will flow thereof.”’

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْبَقْلِ الْهِنْدَبَاءِ وَ الْبَاذَرُوجِ وَ الْجِرْجِيرِ فَقَالَ الْهِنْدَبَاءُ وَ وَ الْبَاذَرُوجُ لَنَا وَ الْجِرْجِيرُ لِبَنِي أُمَيَّةَ .

    3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Musa ibn al-Hassan from Ahmad ibn Sulayman from his father from abu Basir who has said the following: “Once, a man asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about endives, sweet basil and watercress. He (the Imam) said, ‘Endives and sweet basil are for us and watercress is for banu ’Umayyah.’”

    عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله، عن محمد بن عيسى، عن الحسين بن سعيد، عن نصير مولى أبي عبد الله عليه السلام، عن موفق مولى أبي الحسن عليه السلام قال: كان مولاي أبو الحسن عليه السلام إذا أمر بشراء البقل يأمر بالاكثار منه ومن الجرجير فيشترى له وكان يقول عليه السلام: ما أحمق بعض الناس يقولون إنه ينبت في واد في جهنم والله عز وجل يقول:وقودها الناس والحجارة فكيف تنبت البقل.

    4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Nusayr Mawla’ abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, from Muwaffaq Mawla’ abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “When my master ordered buying herbs he ordered quite a large amount and also watercress. It then would have been purchased for him and he (the Imam) would say, ‘How dimwitted certain people are when they say that it grows in a valley of hell and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, ‘Its fuel is people and stones’ (2:24); then how can herbs grow therein?”’

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ رَفَعَ عَنِ الْيَهُودِ الْجُذَامَ بِأَكْلِهِمُ السِّلْقَ وَ قَلْعِهِمُ الْعُرُوقَ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘ Abd Allah from al-Hassan ibn Ali from abu ‘Uthman in a marfu ‘ manner who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, removed leprosy from Jews because of their eating beets and their cutting the veins.’”
