6. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from certain persons of our people who have said the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, disliked the kidneys and said that they are the collectors of urine.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from al-Kahiliy who has said the following: “Once a man asked abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when I was with him (the Imam), about the tails of sheep being cut off. He (the Imam) said, ’It is not unlawful if it serves your interest. 5 He (the Imam) then said, ’It is in the book of Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that whatever is cut off from sheep, is dead and must not be used to benefit thereby.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’If the tails of sheep are cut off when the sheep is alive, the tail is dead like being slaughtered improperly.’”
3. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, people who live in the mountains cut off the tails of their sheep because they become very large.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not lawful (inedible).’ I then asked, saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, can it be used in lamps for lighting during the night? He (the Imam) said, ‘You must take notice that it can come in contact with your hand and clothes and it is unlawful.’”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid and Yahya ibn Mubarak from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jabalah from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “About the case of a man who strikes a deer with his sword until it is cut into two: if he can use it for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, he can use it for food, only the piece with the head and leave the tail.’”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Fadl al-Nawfaliy from his father from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about my hunting with a flareless arrow and it kills. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is cut into two pieces then throw away the smaller piece and use the larger one for food. If both are equal then use both.’”
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from certain persons of our people in a marfu‘ manner the following is narrated: “About the case of a deer or wild donkey hunted with sword; if it is cut in pieces, he (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful to use both pieces for food if one of them is not still moving, but if one piece moves, the other piece then is not edible because it is dead.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “About the case of a man who hunts a prey and cuts it into two pieces, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, has said, ‘He can use both of them for food but if he cuts a part only he then must not eat what is cut off but he can eat the rest.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn Ali from Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl from abu Hamzah al-Thumaliy who has said the following: “Once I was in the Masjid of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when a man came and offered Salam (the phrase of offering greeting of peace) and asked, ‘Who are you, O servant of Allah?’ I replied, ‘I am a man from al-Kufah.’ I then asked, ‘What do you need?’ He asked, ‘Do you know abu Ja‘far, Muhammad ibn Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam ?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I know him (the Imam). What do you need from him?’ He said, ‘I have prepared forty questions to ask from him for answers and then what is right and true I will accept, and what is false, leave them alone.’ Abu Hamzah has said, ‘I then asked him if he was able to distinguish between truth and falsehood.’ He replied, ‘Yes, I can do so.’ I then asked him, ‘Why do you need him when you are able to distinguish between truth and falsehood?’ He said, ‘People of al- Kufah, you are such that one cannot talk to you. If you see abu Ja‘far then inform me.’ Our conversation was not yet complete that abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, came with people of Khurasan around him as well as other people asking him questions about the rules of al-Hajj. He (the Imam) went to his place and sat down and the man (Qatadah) sat near him (the Imam). Abu Hamzah has said, ‘I then sat where I could hear (people) speaking. Around him (the Imam) there was a world (large group) of people. When he (the Imam) completed what the people needed and they left, he (the Imam) turned to the man and asked, ‘Who are you?’ He replied, ‘I am Qatadah ibn al-Da‘amah al-Basriy.’ Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, asked, ‘Are you faqih of people of al-Basrah?’ He replied, ‘Yes, I am their faqih.’ Abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘Fie upon you, O Qatadah. You must notice that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has created creatures in His creation and has made them a barrier over His creation, and they are the pillars on His earth, protectors of His commandments, the noble ones in His knowledge whom He had chosen before His creation, while as shadows on the right of His throne.’ He (the narrator) has said that Qatadah remained silent for a long time, then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, I have sat before scholars of fiqh and before ibn ‘Abbas but my heart did not become nervous before anyone of them as it has become nervous before you.’ Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Fie upon you, do you realize where are sitting? You are before the houses for which Allah has declared to be raised and therein Allah is spoken of. (It happens there) in the mornings and evenings, by men who are not distracted by trade or other forms of business from speaking about Allah, performing Salat (prayer) and paying Zakat. You are in such house and we are the people therein.’ Qatadah said, ‘You have spoken the truth by Allah, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, by Allah they are not houses of stones and clay.’ Qatadah then asked, ‘Tell me about cheese.’ Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, smiled then said, ‘Have all of your questions ended up to this?’ He replied, ‘They have become mixed and confusing.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ He said, ‘What happens if perhaps rennet from a dead animal is placed in it?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful because rennet does not have any veins and blood or bones. It only comes out of a dead animal from the middle of dung and blood.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Rennet is like an egg that comes out of a dead chicken. Is that egg edible?’ Qatadah said, ‘No, it is not edible and I do not command anyone to eat it.’ Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, asked, ‘Why do you not eat it?’ He replied, ‘Because it is dead.’ He (the Imam) then asked, ‘If that egg is hatched and it becomes a chicken will you eat the chicken?’ Qatadah replied, ‘Yes, I will do so.’ He (the Imam) then asked, ‘What is it that makes you to eat the chicken but not the egg from which it has come out?’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘The same rule applies to rennet which is like the egg. You can buy cheese from the market of Muslims from the hands of those who perform Salat (prayer) and do not ask about it, unless someone comes and informs you about it.’”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ’Isma‘il ibn Marrar from Yunus from ‘A’immah, ‘Alayhim af-Salam, who has said the following: “’A’immah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said, ‘Five advantageous things to people are clean. Of such things, one is rennet, eggs, wool, hairs, and fur and it is not unlawful to eat cheese. All of such things must come from the hands of Muslims or non-Muslims. It is only undesirable to eat them, except rennet, which is in the utensils of Zoroastrian and people of the book, because they do not pay attention to dead animals and wine.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from al-Husayn ibn Zurarah who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and my father was asking him (the Imam) questions about milk from a dead animal, eggs from dead chickens and rennet from dead animals. He (the Imam) said, ‘All of these things are clean.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I then asked him (the Imam) about the hairs of pigs from which ropes are made and are used to draw water from wells for drinking or wudu.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ Ali ibn ‘Uqbah and Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Ribat have added saying, ‘Hairs and wool, all of it is clean.’ In the Hadith of Safwan from al-Husayn ibn Zurarah from abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, it says that hairs, wool, fur and feathers and all growing things (on the body of animals which is slaughtered properly) but are not dead. He (the narrator) has said, ‘I then asked about the egg that comes from a dead chicken. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can eat it.’”
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad from Hariz who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to Zurarah and Muhammad ibn Muslim has stated this Hadith. ‘The milk, that kind of milk which is drawn first, eggs, hairs, wool, horns, teeth, hooves and everything separated from sheep and the stumper is clean but if you take such things after the animal dies then wash it and perform Salat (prayer) with it.’”
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “About the case of an egg which comes out of the bottom of a dead chicken, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If the egg is covered with its thick crust , then it is not unlawful.’”
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from al-Mukhtar ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mukhtar and Muhammad ibn al-Hassan from ‘Abd Allah ibn al- Hassan al-‘Alawiy all from al-Fath ibn Yazid al-Jurjaniy who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, asking about the skins of dead animals which are of the edible kind if slaughtered properly. He (the Imam) wrote in answer, ‘It is not permissible to benefit from the skins of dead animals or sinew (but you can benefit) from items from lambs, like wool even if they are pulled out, hairs, fur and rennet and nothing besides these by the will of Allah.’”
7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ‘Asem ibn Hamid from Ali ibn al-Mughirah who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, is it permissible to benefit from dead animals?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not permissible.’ I then said, ‘It is narrated to us from the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, that he (the Messenger of Allah) passed by a dead sheep and said, “What was wrong with the owners of this sheep? If they could not benefit from its flesh why did they not benefit from its skin?”’ He (the Imam) said, ‘That sheep belonged to Sawdah daughter of Zam‘ah, wife of the Holy Prophet. The sheep was very skinny and weak and its flesh was not useful; so they left it until it died. The Messenger of Allah then said, “What was wrong with the owners of this sheep. If they could not benefit from its flesh why did they not benefit from its skin?”’
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Shammun from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al- Rahman from Misma‘ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about an animal sexually molested. ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Its flesh is unlawful for food as well as its milk.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) عَنْ أَكْلِ لَحْمِ الْفَحْلِ وَقْتَ اغْتِلَامِهِ .
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited to use for food the flesh of a sexually active ram/”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Once abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about the case of a man who had sheep and cows and he separated the clean and the dead then they became mixed and about what he should do. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can sell it to one who considers dead animals lawful then use what he receives as payment; it is not unlawful.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from abu al-Mighra’ from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘If clean (properly slaughtered) become mixed with the dead ones, one can sell them to one who considers dead animals as lawful and use the payment that one receives.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from ’Isma‘il ibn ‘Umar from Shu’ayb who has said the following: “It is about the case of a man who enters a town where he finds a certain amount of meat, but does not know if it is clean (properly slaughtered) or from dead animals. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can throw it on fire. If it shrinks it is clean (properly slaughtered) but if expands it is from dead animals.”’
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ‘Umar ibn ‘Udhaynah from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘If a rat falls in ghee and dies in it, if it is solid, it (the rat) then must be thrown away as well as whatever has come in contact with it. If it is fluid you must not use it for food but you can use it for lighting during the night and so also is the case about oil.”’
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Mu‘awiyah ibn Wahab who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the mouse that dies in ghee or oil or honey. He (the Imam) said, ‘In the case of ghee and honey the mouse and whatever has come in contact with it can be taken out; but oil can be used only for lighting during the night.’”
3. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from Ali ibn al-Nu’man from Sa‘id al-A’raj who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about rat or dog that falls in ghee and oil, then it is taken out alive. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful to use it for food.’” (In al-Tahdhib by Shaykh there is no mention of dog. It perhaps is a mistake by scribes).
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from ‘Ammar ibn Musa who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that he was asked about eel and fish on roasting bars on fire. He (the Imam) said, ‘Whatever is above the eel can be used for food but not what is below; and if anything has dropped from eel, it must be thrown away.’ He (the Imam) said that he was asked about a spleen on roasting bars with meat and underneath there is bread with al-Judha’b (a kind of sandwich); if what is below can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, the meat and sandwich can be used for food but the spleen must be thrown away because it has a barrier and nothing drips out of it unless a hole is made in it or a cut, in which case you must not eat the items on which drops have fallen from the spleen. 5 ”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ’Isma‘il ibn Marrar from Yunus from ‘A’immah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, who have said the following: A’immah , ‘Alayhim al-Salam, were asked about a certain amount of wheat on which the fat of pigs has melted. He (the Imam) said, ‘If they can wash it they must do so and use it for food;but if they cannot wash it then they can use it as seed to grow a plantation. 5 ”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the food of the people of the book and what is lawful for food thereof. He (the Imam) said, ’It is grains.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn Sinan from ‘Ammar ibn Marwan from Sanaa ‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the food of the people of the book and what is lawful for food thereof. He (the Imam) said, ’It is grains.’”
3. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from ‘Is ibn al-Qasim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, about eating with the Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians. He (the Imam) said, ’If the food belongs to you then make wudu (wash) and eat with them; it is not unlawful.’”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd Allah ibn Yahya al-Kahiliy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a Muslim people who take food and a Zoroastrian man comes to them; if they can invite him for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not eat food with Zoroastrians and I dislike making unlawful for you what you do in your lands.’”
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub, from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja’far, Alayhi al-Salam, about the utensils of the non-Muslim taxpayer and Zoroastrians. He (the Imam) said, ’Do not eat in their utensils or from their food which they cook or in the utensils that they use for drinking wine.’”
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from abu al-Jarud who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, about the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘The food of the people to whom the book was given is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them.’ (5:5) He (the Imam) said, ‘It is grains and vegetables.’”
7. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from Ali ibn Ja‘far from his brother abu al-Hassan, Musa, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, Alayhi al-Salam, about eating with a Zoroastrian in a bowl and sleeping with him on one furnishing and shaking hands with him. He (the Imam) said, ‘No.’”
8. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ’Isma‘il ibn Mehran from Muhammad ibn Ziyad from Harun ibn Kharijah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, if I can associate with Zoroastrians and eat from their food. He (the Imam) said, ‘No.’”
9. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from ’Isma‘il ibn Jabir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the people of the book and what he (the Imam) says about their food. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not eat it.’ He (the Imam) then remained quiet then said, ‘Do not eat it’ He (the Imam) then remained quiet then said, ‘Do not eat it and do not leave it. Say that it is unlawful, however, you can leave to abstain thereof because in their utensils there is wine and flesh of pigs.’”
10. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Mu‘awiyah ibn Wahab from Zakariya ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “I was a Christian, then became a Muslim and said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘People of my family are Christians. I live with them in one house and eat in their utensils. He (the Imam) asked, ‘Do they eat pork?’ I replied, ‘No, they do not eat pork.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the words of Allah, most Blessed, most High, ‘Those who are compelled without being rebels or transgressors . . (2:172) He (the Imam) said, ‘A rebel is one who rises against the Imam and a transgressor is one who cuts off the road and dead animals are not lawful for him.”’
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from abu Yahya al-Wasitiy from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Eating clay is unlawful in its entirety, like the flesh of pork. If one eats it and dies, I will not perform Salat (prayer) for him except the clay from the grave (of al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam ) in which there is cure for all kinds of illnesses but if one eats it because of strong desire, then there is no cure in it.’”
2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Talhah ibn Zayd who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Eating clay is of the sources of hypocrisy.”’
3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad ibn Mahbub from Ibrahim ibn Mehzam from Talhah ibn Zayd who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘One who continues eating clay has a share in his own murder.’”
4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, created Adam from clay and has made it unlawful for his offspring to eat clay.’”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ibn Faddal from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “About the case of a man who ate clay ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, prohibited and said, ‘Do not eat clay; if you eat clay and die, you have helped to murder yourself.’”
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Ysma‘il ibn Muhammad from his grandfather Ziyad ibn abu Ziyad who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Wishing and longing is an act of Satan. Eating clay is of the greater part of the hunting devices of Satan. It causes illness in the body and accelerates pain. If one because of eating clay loses his power that he had before eating clay and fails to work as he did before eating clay he will be made to suffer proportionate to the amount of power that he had lost because of eating clay.’”
7. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu’ammar ibn Khallad who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about what people narrate as regards eating clay and that it is undesirable. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is clay and chunks of dirt.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مَنْ أَكَلَ الطِّينَ فَمَاتَ فَقَدْ أَعَانَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ .
8. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one eats clay and dies he has helped to kill himself.’”
9. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from certain persons of our people from Ja‘far ibn Ibrahim al-Hadramiy from Sa‘d ibn Sa‘d who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about clay. He (the Imam) said, ‘ It is unlawful like dead animals, blood, flesh of pigs except the clay from the grave of al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in which there is cure for all kinds of illness and security from all kinds of fear.”’
1. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Dawud ibn Sarhan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not eat from the utensils of gold and silver.
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il ibn Bazi‘ who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the utensils of gold and silver which he disliked and I then said, ‘It is narrated from certain persons of our people that abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, had a mirror that had a silver covering.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, all praise belongs to Allah. It had only a ring of silver and it is with me.’ He then said, ‘When al- ‘Abbas was circumcised a stick with a silver covering was made for him like things that are made for children. It had about ten dirham of silver and abu al-Hassan, commanded to break it.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not eat from the utensils of silver or that which is silver-coated.’”
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad, from ibn Mahbub from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, prohibited the use of utensils of gold and silver.’”
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Tha’labah from Burayd who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, disliked drinking from silver and silver-coated utensils as well as silver coated containers of perfumes and combs.’”
