“The Book of Taharah (Purification)” is book 10 of Al-Kafi, the collection of ash-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Kulayni. It holds 339 hadiths — Hadith 3,788–3,837 in the standard numbering. 1. Abu Ja‘far, Muhammad ibn Ya’qub al-Kulayni (rh) has said that narrated to me Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn Hashim from his father from al- Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy, who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Water cleanses but it is not cleanable.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya and others have narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from al-Hassan ibn al-Hassan al-Lu’lu’i through his chain of narrators has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘All water is clean until it is found out that it is not clean.”’
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan from abu Dawud al-Munshid from Ja’far ibn Muhammad from Yunus from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, that all water (from source) is clean until it is found out that it is not clean.”
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ’Isa from Yunus ibn ’Abd al-Rahman from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Is sea water clean?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, it is clean.’”
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ’Isa from ‘Uthman ibn ’Isa from abu Bakr al-Hadramiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Is sea water clean?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, it is clean.’”

Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Safwan ibn Yahya and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa all from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I heard abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, say, ‘If the quantity of water is one Kur, then things do not make it unclean.”’
2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a water which dogs lick and in which animals urinate and people take baths after sexual activities. He (the Imam) said, ‘If its quantity is one Kur, then such things cannot make it unclean.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurarah who has said the following: “If the quantity of water is more than a Rawiyah, then it does not become unclean because of things falling in it, regardless of whether they have disintegrated or not, unless the smell of such things overwhelms the smell of water.”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from al-Hassan ibn Salih al-Thawriy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If a quantity of water measures one Kur it does not become unclean.’ I then asked, ‘How much is the quantity of Kur?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Three and a half shibr in depth and three and a half in width. ”’(A Shibr is from the tip of thumb to the tip of the small finger with the palm spread open)
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa form ibn Muskan from abu Basir who has said the following: “I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘How much is the quantity of one Kur of water?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘If the size of water is three and a half shibr by three and a half shibr, and three and a half shibr in its depth in the ground, then it is one Kur.’”
6. Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from ibn abu ‘Umayr from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the quantity of one Kur of water is one thousand and two hundred ritl (a certain measurement).”
7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Barqiy from ibn Sinan from ’Isma‘il ibn Jabir who has said the following: “I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the water which does not become unclean by anything. He (the Imam) replied, ‘It is one Kur.’ I then asked, ‘How much is one Kur?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘It is three shibr by three shibr in size.’”
8. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ’Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The quantity of one Kur of water is of the size of this Hubb (a water container).’ He pointed with his hand to one of those Hubb which are used in al- Madinah.”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd Allah ibn Yahya al-Kahiliy who has said the following: “I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, say, ‘If you find a small quantity of water, then take away some water from the right, left and in front of you, then take a Wudu’”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from ibn Muskan who has said that Muhammad ibn al- Muyassir has said the following: “I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘A man, after a sexual activity finds water on the way which is less than a Kur in quantity. He wants to take a bath but he does not have a bowl to pick up water with. His hands are dirty (but they are clean). What should he do?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He may place his hand in it to take Wudu’ (to wash) then he takes a bath. Allah, the most Majestic, the most Glorious, has said, “He (Allah) has not made in religion anything that causes you hardships.’” (22:78)
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Hammad from Hariz from those who reported to him who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that as long as water overwhelms the smell of a dead animal you can take Wudu’ with it and drink it, but when the smell changes as well as its taste, then do not take Wudu’ with it and do not drink it.”
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn ‘Ubayd from Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “A man asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when I was present, about a pond of water where a dead animal was found. He (the Imam) said, ‘If water is overwhelming and there is no smell in it, then you can take Wudu’ with it.’”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn abu Hamzah who has said the following: “I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a (pond of) water which is not running and has a dead animal in it. ‘How can one cleanse oneself with such water?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can take Wudu’ from the other side and not from the side of the dead animal.’”
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Is it permissible to take Wudu’ with water which is discolored?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so but if you find other water cleanse yourself with it.’”
7. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Sahl from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn abu Nasr from Safwan al-Jammal who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘There are ponds between al-Madinah and Makkah where beasts come and dogs lick, people take baths because of sexual activities or take Wudu’ with it.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘How much water is it?’ I replied, ‘It is up to the leg or up to half of the leg or up to the knees or less.’ He (the Imam) said, ’You can take Wudu’ with such water.”’
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il ibn Bazi‘ who has said the following: “I once wrote to a person to write to abu al-Hassan al-Rida, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, to ask him about a well in one’s house for Wudu’. If some drops of urine, or blood, or animal dung and so forth fall in it, then how can it be cleansed so one can take Wudu’ with water from such a well for Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) sent the answer with his signature that said, ’Draw a few buckets of water from it and dispose such water away.’”
2. Through the same chain of narrators as the previous Hadith the following is stated: “He (the Imam) ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Well water is vast. It does not become polluted until it is changed.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Jamil ibn Darraj from abu ‘Usamah who has said the following: “This is about the case of a rat, cat, chicken, bird and dog in a well. Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘As long as they have not disintegrated or water’s taste is not changed, take out five buckets of water thereof, but if there is a change in the water then continue drawing out the water until the smell is gone.’”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya in a marfu‘ manner has narrated the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Water does not become polluted because of the living things which do not have spurting blood when a cut is made in its body.’”
5. Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shimr from Jabir who has said the following: “This is about the case of al-Sam al-Abras (a poisonous snake) that falls in the well. Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not harmful. Just stir the water with the bucket.’”
6. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from ibn Sinan from ibn Muskan from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about things that fall into the wells. He (the Imam) said, ‘Because of rats and similar things, seven buckets of water must be drawn out, unless the water is changed, in which case drawing water out must continue until it becomes clean. If a dog falls in it, if you can, draw all of the water out. Falling in a well of anything without blood like a scorpion or beetle and similar things is not harmful.’”
7. Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from ibn Muskan from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If something small falls in a well and dies, then take a few buckets of water out. If a person involved in sexual activities (because of which Ghusl (bath) is obligatory) falls in it, you must draw seven buckets of water out thereof. If a camel dies in it or wine is poured in it then you must draw out all of the water.”’
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy ibn Ali from Ali ibn Ja‘far who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a man who slaughters a sheep and due to the shock it falls into the water well with blood gushing from its veins. Can one take Wudu’ from such well? He (the Imam) said, ’One must draw out thirty to forty buckets of water, then one can take Wudu’ with its water and it is not harmful.’ I then asked about a man who slaughters a chicken or pigeon and it falls into the well. Can one take Wudu’ with water from such well? He (the Imam) said, ‘A few buckets of water must be taken out, then one can take Wudu’.’ I then asked about someone from whose nostril blood falls into the well can one then take Wudu’ with water from such well? He (the Imam) said, ‘A few buckets of water must be taken out.’”
9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ’Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from those whom he has mentioned who have said the following: “I once said to abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that there is a water-well and with its water pieces of skin come out. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not anything. Perhaps a frog sheds its skin.’ He (the Imam) said that one bucket of water is sufficient for you.’”
10. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Ri’ab from Zurarah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, about a rope made of the hairs of hogs which is used to take out water from the well. Can Wudu’ be made with such water? He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”
11. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn abu Hamzah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, about the falling of feces into a well. He (the Imam) said, ‘Ten buckets of water must be taken out and if it has disintegrated then forty or fifty buckets of water must be taken out.’”
12. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Sahl from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from ‘Abd al-Karim from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, that there was a well from which people drank, took Wudu’, washed their clothes and flour was made into dough with its water, and then a dead body was found in it. He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not matter, there is no need to wash clothes or perform Salah (prayer) again.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from al-Hassan ibn Ribat who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a cesspool which is above a well. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is above the well, the distance in between must be seven yards, but if it is below the well, the distance must be five yards from all sides, and that is a large area.”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurarah, Muhammad ibn Muslim and abu Basir who have said the following: “We once asked him (abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam ,) about a well which is used for Wudu’ and nearby urine flows. ‘Is such a well Najis (unclean)? He (the Imam) replied, ‘If the well is above the place where urine flows below the well and there is a distance of three or four yards in between, it does not make anything of the well Najis (unclean) but if the distance is less than this, the well becomes Najis (unclean). If the well is below the place where water (urine) flows and there is a distance of nine yards between them it does not make the well Najis (unclean). If the distance is less than this then it cannot be used for Wudu’ Zurarah then asked, ‘What happens if the place is steep and urine flows fast and is not stationary on the ground?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is not stationary it is not harmful, and even if a little of it is stationary, it does not make a deep hole in the ground to reach the well and it is not harmful to the well, thus it can be used for Wudu’. It is harmful to the well only when all of it (urine) is absorbed in the ground.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from abu ’Isma‘il from al-Sarraj from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman from Qudamah ibn abu Yazid al-Hammar from certain persons of our people who have said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the distance needed between a well and a cesspool. He (the Imam) replied, ‘If the ground is plain, the distance must be seven yards; and if it is a hillside the distance must be five yards.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Water flows forward in direction, to the right or to the left or from its left side to its right side (in) forward direction but it does not flow backward.’”
4. Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from ‘Abbad ibn Sulayman from Sa‘d ibn Sa‘d from Muhammad ibn al- Qasim who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a well which is five yards or more or less away from a cesspool. Can it be used for Wudu’? He (the Imam) said, ‘Shortness or length of distance does not matter. It can be used for Wudu’ or Ghusl (bath) if the water has not changed.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that it is permissible to use for Wudu’ the water from which edible animals have drunk.”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid and Al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that it is permissible to use for Wudu’ the water from which pigeons, chickens or birds have drunk.”
3. Abu Dawud has narrated from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from his brother al-Hassan from Zur’ah, from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Is it permissible to use for Wudu’ the leftover water from which animals have drunk?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘As far as the camel, cow and sheep are concerned, it is permissible.’”
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ‘Umar ibn ‘Udhaynah from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that it is in the book of Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that cats are beasts but there is no offense in using the leftover of what they eat. I feel embarrassed before Allah to throw away a food from which a cat has eaten.’”
5. Ahmad ibn Idris and Muhammad ibn Yahya have narrated from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan from ‘Arm ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from ‘Ammar ibn Musa who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about the leftover of the water from which pigeons have drunk. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is permissible for you to use the leftover from which edible animals have used. You can use it for Wudu’ or drink the leftover of the water from which they have drunk, like a falcon or a hawk or an eagle.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘You can use for Wudu’ the water from which birds have drunk, unless you see blood on their beaks. If so then do not use it for Wudu’ or drinking.’”
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a jar in which a beetle is found dead. He (the Imam) said, ‘Throw it away then use the water for Wudu’; but if it is a scorpion, then throw the water away and use some other water for Wudu’.’ I then asked him (the Imam) about a man who has two water containers of which he knows one is unclean but does not know exactly which one and he is not able to find other water. He (the Imam) said, ‘He must throw away the water in both containers and take a Tayammum instead of Wudu’.’”
7. Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ayyub ibn Nuh from al-Washsha’ from those whom he has mentioned who have said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, disliked using the leftover of the water from which inedible animals have drunk.”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan all from Safwan ibn Yahya from Mansur ibn Hazim from ‘Anbasah who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that it is permissible for you to drink the leftover water from which a woman during her Hayd (menses) has drunk but do not take Wudu 5 with it.”
2. Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Safwan ibn Yahya from al-‘Is ibn al-Qasim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Can a man and a woman take a Ghusl (bath) from the same water container? 5 He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, they can do so. They first must pour water on their hands and then place their hands in the water container. 5 I (the narrator) then asked, about the leftover water from which a woman during her Hayd (menses) has drunk. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not use it for Wudu 5 but it is permissible to use for Wudu 5 the leftover water from which a person after sexual relations has drank if such person is trustworthy (in matters of cleanliness). She then must wash her hands before placing them in the water container. The Messenger of Allah and ‘A’isha would take Ghusl (bath) together from one water container.
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Ftakam from al-Husayn ibn abu al-‘Ala’ who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Can a woman during her Hayd (menses) drink water which is her own leftover? 5 He (the Imam) replied, ‘It is permissible for her to do so but she must not use it for Wudu 5 .
4. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad al-Washsha’ from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman from ibn abu Ya‘fur who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, if a man can take Wudu 5 with the water from which a woman has drunk. He (the Imam) said, ‘(Yes, he can do so) if she knows Wudu 5 , but one cannot take Wudu 5 with water which is left over of a woman who experiences Hayd (menses).
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from Sa‘id al-‘Araj who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the leftover of Jews and Christians. He (the Imam) said, ‘No.
6. Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ayyub ibn Nuh from al-Washsha’ from those whom he has mentioned who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, did not like the leftover of a person born out of wedlock, Jews, Christians and pagans and whoever opposed Islam and most serious to him was the leftover of one hostile to ’A’immah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam.”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ’Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from Sama‘ah from abu Basir the following: ‘‘(’A’immah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said that it is permissible to place one’s hand in a water container before washing them, provided, urine or things from semen discharge has not reached them; otherwise, one must throw away such water.”
