    1- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنْ كَسْبِ الْمُغَنِّيَاتِ فَقَالَ الَّتِي يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهَا الرِّجَالُ حَرَامٌ وَالَّتِي تُدْعَى إِلَى الأعْرَاسِ لَيْسَ بِهِ بَأْسٌ وَهُوَ قَوْلُ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللهِ.

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa’id from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the legal status of the income from female music playing singers. He (the Imam) said, ’Such singing and playing music of females where men are also present is unlawful. There is no offense in inviting female singers on the occasion of a wedding program. It is in the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, “Among people are those who purchase useless talk to make people lose the path of Allah.” (31:6)”’

  2. 8507Al-Kafi

    2- عَنْهُ عَنْ حَكَمٍ الْحَنَّاطِ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ الْمُغَنِّيَةُ الَّتِي تَزُفُّ الْعَرَائِسَ لا بَأْسَ بِكَسْبِهَا.

    2. It is narrated from him (narrator of the previous Hadith) from Hakam al-Hannat from abu Basir, who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam has said, ’The income of a female singer who attends wedding ceremonies is lawful.’”

    3- أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ الْحُرِّ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) أَجْرُ الْمُغَنِّيَةِ الَّتِي تَزُفُّ الْعَرَائِسَ لَيْسَ بِهِ بَأْسٌ لَيْسَتْ بِالَّتِي يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهَا الرِّجَالُ.

    3. Ahmad ibn Muhammad from has narrated from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from Yahya al-Halabiy from Ayyub al-Hurr from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The payment that a female singer receives from singing in wedding ceremonies is lawful, provided men do not attend her singing program.’”

  4. 8509Al-Kafi

    4- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْوَشَّاءِ قَالَ سُئِلَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنْ شِرَاءِ الْمُغَنِّيَةِ فَقَالَ قَدْ تَكُونُ لِلرَّجُلِ الْجَارِيَةُ تُلْهِيهِ وَمَا ثَمَنُهَا إِلا ثَمَنُ كَلْبٍ وَثَمَنُ الْكَلْبِ سُحْتٌ وَالسُّحْتُ فِي النَّارِ.

    4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about the legal status of purchasing a female singer. He (the Imam) said, ‘Sometimes a slave-girl of a man makes him go astray. What is then paid for such a slave-girl is like payment to purchase a dog. Payment for a dog is Suht (unlawful and filthy) and Suht is in the fire.’”

    5- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الطَّاهِرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ عَنْ بَيْعِ الْجَوَارِي الْمُغَنِّيَاتِ فَقَالَ شِرَاؤُهُنَّ وَبَيْعُهُنَّ حَرَامٌ وَتَعْلِيمُهُنَّ كُفْرٌ وَاسْتِمَاعُهُنَّ نِفَاقٌ.

    5. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from all from ibn Faddal from Sa‘id ibn Muhammad al-Tahir from his father who has said the following: “A man once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about selling slave-girl singers. He (the Imam) said, ‘Buying and selling them is unlawful, teaching them (singing) is disbelief and listening to them is hypocrisy.’”

  6. 8511Al-Kafi

    6- أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ نَصْرِ بْنِ قَابُوسَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ الْمُغَنِّيَةُ مَلْعُونَةٌ مَلْعُونٌ مَنْ أَكَلَ كَسْبَهَا.

    6. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Ishaq ibn Ibrahim from Nasr ibn Qabus who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘A singer female is condemned, and condemned is one who consumes the income from her singing.’”

    7- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ أَبِي الْبِلادِ قَالَ أَوْصَى إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عُمَرَ عِنْدَ وَفَاتِهِ بِجَوَارٍ لَهُ مُغَنِّيَاتٍ أَنْ نَبِيعَهُنَّ وَنَحْمِلَ ثَمَنَهُنَّ إِلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ فَبِعْتُ الْجَوَارِيَ بِثَلاثِمِائَةِ أَلْفِ دِرْهَمٍ وَحَمَلْتُ الثَّمَنَ إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ مَوْلًى لَكَ يُقَالُ لَهُ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عُمَرَ قَدْ أَوْصَى عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ بِبَيْعِ جَوَارٍ لَهُ مُغَنِّيَاتٍ وَحَمْلِ الثَّمَنِ إِلَيْكَ وَقَدْ بِعْتُهُنَّ وَهَذَا الثَّمَنُ ثَلاثُمِائَةِ أَلْفِ دِرْهَمٍ فَقَالَ لا حَاجَةَ لِي فِيهِ إِنَّ هَذَا سُحْتٌ وَتَعْلِيمَهُنَّ كُفْرٌ وَالاسْتِمَاعَ مِنْهُنَّ نِفَاقٌ وَثَمَنَهُنَّ سُحْتٌ.

    7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from certain persons of his people from Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il from Ibrahim ibn abu al-Balad who has said the following: “Ishaq ibn ‘Umar made a will about his singer slave-girls at the time when he was about to die that said, ‘They must be sold and funds from their sale delivered to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. Ibrahim has said, ‘I sold the slave-girls for three hundred thousand dirham and took it to him (the Imam) and said, ‘One of your followers, called Ishaq ibn ‘Umar has made a will at the time he was about to die to sell his singer slave-girls and take the funds from their sale to you. I have sold them and this is the three hundred thousand dirham from the sale. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not need them. It is Suht (filthy), teaching them is disbelief, listening to them is hypocrisy and funds from their sale are Suht (filthy) unlawful.’”

    1- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ بَزِيعٍ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ عَنْ حَسَّانَ الْمُعَلِّمِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنِ التَّعْلِيمِ فَقَالَ لا تَأْخُذْ عَلَى التَّعْلِيمِ أَجْراً قُلْتُ الشِّعْرُ وَالرَّسَائِلُ وَمَا أَشْبَهَ ذَلِكَ أُشَارِطُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ بَعْدَ أَنْ يَكُونَ الصِّبْيَانُ عِنْدَكَ سَوَاءً فِي التَّعْلِيمِ لا تُفَضِّلُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ.

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il ibn Bazi’ from al-Fadl ibn al- Kathir from Hassan al-Mu‘allim who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about teaching on hire like poetry, letter-writing and similar issues on condition of payment. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is permissible if children are treated with equality in teaching without any preference for anyone of them over the others.’”

  9. 8514Al-Kafi

    2- عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ شَرِيفِ بْنِ سَابِقٍ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ أَبِي قُرَّةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) هَؤُلاءِ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ كَسْبَ الْمُعَلِّمِ سُحْتٌ فَقَالَ كَذَبُوا أَعْدَاءُ اللهِ إِنَّمَا أَرَادُوا أَنْ لا يُعَلِّمُوا الْقُرْآنَ وَلَوْ أَنَّ الْمُعَلِّمَ أَعْطَاهُ رَجُلٌ دِيَةَ وَلَدِهِ لَكَانَ لِلْمُعَلِّمِ مُبَاحاً.

    2. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Sharif ibn Sabiq from al-Fadl ibn abu Qurrah who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘They say that receiving payment for teaching is Suht (filthy and unlawful). He (the Imam) said, ‘They, the enemies of Allah, have spoken a lie. They want to stop teaching of al-Quran. If one gives blood money for his child to a teacher it (payment) is lawful for the teacher.’”

    1- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّ الْمَصَاحِفَ لَنْ تُشْتَرَى فَإِذَا اشْتَرَيْتَ فَقُلْ إِنَّمَا أَشْتَرِي مِنْكَ الْوَرَقَ وَمَا فِيهِ مِنَ الأدَمِ وَحِلْيَتِهِ وَمَا فِيهِ مِنْ عَمَلِ يَدِكَ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا.

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Aban from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn Sulayman who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Pages (of al-Quran) can never be bought; if you buy say, ‘I buy from you the sheet and whatever is in it, like skin and decoration and the work of your hand for such and such amount.’”

  11. 8516Al-Kafi

    2- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ بَيْعِ الْمَصَاحِفِ وَشِرَائِهَا فَقَالَ لا تَشْتَرِ كِتَابَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلَكِنِ اشْتَرِ الْحَدِيدَ وَالْوَرَقَ وَالدَّفَّتَيْنِ وَقُلْ أَشْتَرِي مِنْكَ هَذَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا.

    2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about buying and selling pages of al-Quran. He (the Imam) said, ‘The book of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, cannot be purchased but iron sheets and covers can be bought. One can say, ‘I buy from you such and such items for such and such amount.’”

    3- أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ غَالِبِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ رَوْحِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ شِرَاءِ الْمَصَاحِفِ وَبَيْعِهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا كَانَ يُوضَعُ الْوَرَقُ عِنْدَ الْمِنْبَرِ وَكَانَ مَا بَيْنَ الْمِنْبَرِ وَالْحَائِطِ قَدْرَ مَا تَمُرُّ الشَّاةُ أَوْ رَجُلٌ مُنْحَرِفٌ قَالَ فَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ يَأْتِي وَيَكْتُبُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمُ اشْتَرَوْا بَعْدَ [ذَلِكَ] قُلْتُ فَمَا تَرَى فِي ذَلِكَ قَالَ لِي أَشْتَرِي أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَبِيعَهُ قُلْتُ فَمَا تَرَى أَنْ أُعْطِيَ عَلَى كِتَابَتِهِ أَجْراً قَالَ لا بَأْسَ وَلَكِنْ هَكَذَا كَانُوا يَصْنَعُونَ.

    3. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from ibn Faddal from Ghalib ibn ‘Uthman from Ruh ibn ‘Abd al-Rahim who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about buying pages of al- Quran and selling them. He (the Imam) said, ‘Only pages (of al-Quran) were placed near the pulpit. The passage between the wall and the pulpit was no bigger than what a sheep could pass through or a man in a sideways manner.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘A man would come and write down from the pages that were there. Thereafter they bought them.’ I then asked, ‘What do you say about it (buying).’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘I like buying more than selling.’ I then asked, ‘What do you say if I pay for writing al-Quran?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful but in their time that was their way of dealing.’”

    4- عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ عَنْ سَابِقٍ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ عَنْبَسَةَ الْوَرَّاقِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) فَقُلْتُ أَنَا رَجُلٌ أَبِيعُ الْمَصَاحِفَ فَإِنْ نَهَيْتَنِي لَمْ أَبِعْهَا فَقَالَ أَلَسْتَ تَشْتَرِي وَرَقاً وَتَكْتُبُ فِيهِ قُلْتُ بَلَى وَأُعَالِجُهَا قَالَ لا بَأْسَ بِهَا.

    4. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Hashim from Sabiq al-Sindiy from ‘Anbasah al-Warraq who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of my selling al-Quran saying, ‘If you prohibit I stop selling.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Is it not the case that you buy pages and write down on them?’ I replied, ‘Yes, that is true and I put more work in it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

    1- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ سَيْفِ بْنِ عَمِيرَةَ عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ عِيسَى وَهُوَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ الْحَذَّاءُ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنْ قَوْلِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْباطِلِ فَقَالَ كَانَتْ قُرَيْشٌ تُقَامِرُ الرَّجُلَ بِأَهْلِهِ وَمَالِهِ فَنَهَاهُمُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَنْ ذَلِكَ.

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Sayf ibn ‘Amirah from Ziyad ibn ‘Isa and he is abu ‘Ubaydah al- Hadhdha’ who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘You must not consume your assets in invalid dealings among your selves. . . (2:184) He (the Imam) said, ‘Among Quraysh a man gambled even his wife and property. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, prohibited such dealings.’”

    2- أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ النَّضْرِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شِمْرٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ لَمَّا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالأنْصابُ وَالأزْلامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا الْمَيْسِرُ فَقَالَ كُلُّ مَا تُقُومِرَ بِهِ حَتَّى الْكِعَابُ وَالْجَوْزُ قِيلَ فَمَا الأنْصَابُ قَالَ مَا ذَبَحُوهُ لآلِهَتِهِمْ قِيلَ فَمَا الأزْلامُ قَالَ قِدَاحُهُمُ الَّتِي يَسْتَقْسِمُونَ بِهَا.

    2. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shamir from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that when Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent to His Messenger, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, the following verse, ‘Wine, gambling, idols and gambling arrows are of the filthy deeds of Satan, you must avoid them’ (5:93), it was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is al-Maysir?’ The Messenger of Allah replied, ‘It is everything with which gambling is conducted, like cubes and walnuts and so on.’ It then was asked, ‘What is al-Ansab?’ The Messenger of Allah replied, ‘It is what they slaughter for their gods.’ It then was asked, ‘What is al-Azlam?’ The Messenger of Allah replied, ‘It is the arrows that they used to distribute certain items.’”

    3- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَأَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ بَعَثَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) غُلاماً يَشْتَرِي لَهُ بَيْضاً فَأَخَذَ الْغُلامُ بَيْضَةً أَوْ بَيْضَتَيْنِ فَقَامَرَ بِهَا فَلَمَّا أَتَى بِهِ أَكَلَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَوْلًى لَهُ إِنَّ فِيهِ مِنَ الْقِمَارِ قَالَ فَدَعَا بِطَشْتٍ فَتَقَيَّأَهُ.

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from all from ibn Mahbub from Yunus ibn Ya’qub from ‘Abd al-Hamid ibn Sa‘id who has said the following: “Once, abu al-Hassan ‘Alayhi al-Salam, sent one of the slaves to buy eggs for him. The slave took one or two eggs and gambled with them. When the slave came back he (the Imam) used the eggs for food. A servant told him (the Imam) about gambling. He (the Imam) asked for a washbowl and threw up.”

    4- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْجَارُودِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) لا يَزْنِي الزَّانِي حِينَ يَزْنِي وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ وَلا يَسْرِقُ السَّارِقُ حِينَ يَسْرِقُ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ وَلا يَنْهَبُ نُهْبَةً ذَاتَ شَرَفٍ حِينَ يَنْهَبُهَا وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ قَالَ ابْنُ سِنَانٍ قُلْتُ لأبِي الْجَارُودِ وَمَا نُهْبَةٌ ذَاتُ شَرَفٍ قَالَ نَحْوُ مَا صَنَعَ حَاتِمٌ حِينَ قَالَ مَنْ أَخَذَ شَيْئاً فَهُوَ لَهُ.

    4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Muhammad ibn Sinan from abu al-Jarud who has said the following: “I once heard abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘A fornicator does not fornicate while he is a believing person, a thief does not steal while he is a believing person and an honorable person does not do Nahbah Dhata Sharaf (an honor-loot) while he is a believing person.’ Ibn Sinan has said that I then asked abu al-Jarud, ‘What is a ‘Nahbah Dhata Sharaf’?’ He replied, ‘It is like what Hatim did when he said, “Whoever takes something it is his.’””

    5- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنِ الْعَلاءِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا (عَلَيْهِما السَّلام) قَالَ لا تَصْلُحُ الْمُقَامَرَةُ وَلا النُّهْبَةُ.

    5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Safwan from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “One of the two Imam, (abu Ja’far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘Gambling and plundering are not righteous deeds.’”

    6- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ كَانَ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْجَوْزِ يَجِي‏ءُ بِهِ الصِّبْيَانُ مِنَ الْقِمَارِ أَنْ يُؤْكَلَ وَقَالَ هُوَ سُحْتٌ.

    6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would prohibit utilization of walnuts, that children bring after using in gambling, saying that it is Suht (filthy), unlawful.’”

    7- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنِ الْعَمْرَكِيِّ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ النِّثَارِ مِنَ السُّكَّرِ وَاللَّوْزِ وَأَشْبَاهِهِ أَيَحِلُّ أَكْلُهُ قَالَ يُكْرَهُ أَكْلُ مَا انْتُهِبَ.

    7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy ibn Ali from Ali ibn Ja’far from his brother who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of what is spread of sugar, almond and so on, on happy occasions if is permissible. He (the Imam) said, ’It is detestable to consume what is plundered.’”

    8- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ جَبَلَةَ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) الإمْلاكُ يَكُونُ وَالْعُرْسُ فَيُنْثَرُ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ حَرَامٌ وَلَكِنْ مَا أَعْطَوْكَ مِنْهُ فَخُذْهُ.

    8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jamilah from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about what people scatter on certain people during an entertaining occasion or wedding ceremony. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is unlawful but what they give, you can take it.’”

    9. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Al-Washsha” who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Al-Maysir is gambling.’”

    10- الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ النَّهْدِيِّ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ جَبَلَةَ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) الصِّبْيَانُ يَلْعَبُونَ بِالْجَوْزِ وَالْبَيْضِ وَيُقَامِرُونَ فَقَالَ لا تَأْكُلْ مِنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ حَرَامٌ.

    10. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Nahdiy from Ya’qub ibn Yazid from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jabalah from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of children who play with walnuts and eggs and gamble. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must not consume them for food; it is unlawful.’”

    1- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَى أُمَّتِي مِنْ بَعْدِي هَذِهِ الْمَكَاسِبُ الْحَرَامُ وَالشَّهْوَةُ الْخَفِيَّةِ وَالرِّبَا.

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘What I fear most for my followers after me are these unlawful earnings, concealed desire and unlawful interest.’”

    2- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ عِيسَى الْفَرَّاءِ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ أَرْبَعَةٌ لا يَجُزْنَ فِي أَرْبَعٍ الْخِيَانَةُ وَالْغُلُولُ وَالسَّرِقَةُ وَالرِّبَا لا يَجُزْنَ فِي حَجٍّ وَلا عُمْرَةٍ وَلا جِهَادٍ وَلا صَدَقَةٍ.

    2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Salih ibn al-Sindiy from Ja’far ibn Bashir from ‘Isa al-Farra’ from Aban ibn ‘Uthman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Four things are not lawful in four issues: treachery, excessiveness, theft and unlawful interest are not lawful in al-Hajj, al-‘Umrah, Jihad and charity.’”

    3- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِذَا اكْتَسَبَ الرَّجُلُ مَالا مِنْ غَيْرِ حِلِّهِ ثُمَّ حَجَّ فَلَبَّى نُودِيَ لا لَبَّيْكَ وَلا سَعْدَيْكَ وَإِنْ كَانَ مِنْ حِلِّهِ فَلَبَّى نُودِيَ لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ.

    3. A number of our people have narrated from has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If a person earns in unlawful ways, then uses such income for the expenses of al-Hajj and says al-Talbiyah (here I am O Lord, to obey Your command) it is called about him, “You are not welcome and there is no salvation for you.” If it (earning) is through lawful ways upon his saying Talbiyah it is called about him, “You are welcome and there is salvation for you.’””

    4- أَحْمَدُ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ كَسْبُ الْحَرَامِ يَبِينُ فِي الذُّرِّيَّةِ.

    4. Ahmad has narrated from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from ‘Ubayd ibn Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The effects of unlawful earning shows up in one’s offspring.’”

    5- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ أَتَى رَجُلٌ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَقَالَ إِنِّي كَسَبْتُ مَالا أَغْمَضْتُ فِي مَطَالِبِهِ حَلالا وَحَرَاماً وَقَدْ أَرَدْتُ التَّوْبَةَ وَلا أَدْرِي الْحَلالَ مِنْهُ وَالْحَرَامَ وَقَدِ اخْتَلَطَ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) تَصَدَّقْ بِخُمُسِ مَالِكَ فَإِنَّ اللهَ جَلَّ اسْمُهُ رَضِيَ مِنَ الأشْيَاءِ بِالْخُمُسِ وَسَائِرُ الأمْوَالِ لَكَ حَلالٌ.

    5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once a man came to ’Amir al-Mu’minin saying, ‘In my earnings I have been neglectful about lawful and unlawful matters, and I want to repent, but I do not know which item in my possession is lawful and which is not.’ ‘Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, said, ‘Give one-fifth of your assets in charity. Allah, most Glorious is whose name, accepts one-fifth of things. The rest of your assets are lawful for you.’”

    6- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْقَاسَانِيِّ عَنْ رَجُلٍ سَمَّاهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ تَشَوَّفَتِ الدُّنْيَا لِقَوْمٍ حَلالا مَحْضاً فَلَمْ يُرِيدُوهَا فَدَرَجُوا ثُمَّ تَشَوَّفَتْ لِقَوْمٍ حَلالا وَشُبْهَةً فَقَالُوا لا حَاجَةَ لَنَا فِي الشُّبْهَةِ وَتَوَسَّعُوا مِنَ الْحَلالِ ثُمَّ تَشَوَّفَتْ لِقَوْمٍ آخَرِينَ حَرَاماً وَشُبْهَةً فَقَالُوا لا حَاجَةَ لَنَا فِي الْحَرَامِ وَتَوَسَّعُوا فِي الشُّبْهَةِ ثُمَّ تَشَوَّفَتْ لِقَوْمٍ حَرَاماً مَحْضاً فَيَطْلُبُونَهَا فَلا يَجِدُونَهَا وَالْمُؤْمِنُ فِي الدُّنْيَا يَأْكُلُ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْمُضْطَرِّ.

    6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qasaniy from a man whom he has mentioned from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Qasim al-Ja’fariy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The world tried to attract a people with purely lawful matters but they passed (without paying any attention) away. Then it tried to attract another people with lawful and doubtful matters and they said, “We do not need any doubtful matters.” However, they expanded the lawful matters. It then tried to attract another people with unlawful and doubtful matters. They said, “We do not need unlawful matters.” However, they expanded the doubtful matters. It then tried to attract another people with unlawful matters only, and they seek to achieve it but they cannot find. The believing people in this world eat like one living through emergencies.’”

    7- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ دَاوُدَ الصَّرْمِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) يَا دَاوُدُ إِنَّ الْحَرَامَ لا يَنْمِي وَإِنْ نَمَى لا يُبَارَكُ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَا أَنْفَقَهُ لَمْ يُؤْجَرْ عَلَيْهِ وَمَا خَلَّفَهُ كَانَ زَادَهُ إِلَى النَّارِ.

    7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Dawud al-Sarmiy who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, £ 0 Dawud, unlawful earnings do not grow. Even if anything grows, it does not have any blessings for him: what he spends does not bring any reward for him and what he leaves behind becomes his supplies to the fire/”

    8- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ كَتَبَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ إِلَى أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) رَجُلٌ اشْتَرَى مِنْ رَجُلٍ ضَيْعَةً أَوْ خَادِماً بِمَالٍ أَخَذَهُ مِنْ قَطْعِ الطَّرِيقِ أَوْ مِنْ سَرِقَةٍ هَلْ يَحِلُّ لَهُ مَا يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ ثَمَرَةِ هَذِهِ الضَّيْعَةِ أَوْ يَحِلُّ لَهُ أَنْ يَطَأَ هَذَا الْفَرْجَ الَّذِي اشْتَرَاهُ مِنَ السَّرِقَةِ أَوْ مِنْ قَطْعِ الطَّرِيقِ فَوَقَّعَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) لا خَيْرَ فِي شَيْ‏ءٍ أَصْلُهُ حَرَامٌ وَلا يَحِلُّ اسْتِعْمَالُهُ.

    8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has said the following: “Once Muhammad ibn al-Hassan wrote to abu Muhammad, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and asked about the case of a man who buys goods or a slave-girl in exchange for a certain amount of assets from one who plunders people on the road or from a thief; if it is lawful for him to use the benefits, or fruits thereof or marry the slave-girl which he has bought from a thief or road plunderer. He (the Imam) signed the answer that said, ’Nothing is good in whatever originates from an unlawful source; and using such matters is not lawful.’”

    9- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنْ رَجُلٍ أَصَابَ مَالا مِنْ عَمَلِ بَنِي أُمَيَّةَ وَهُوَ يَتَصَدَّقُ مِنْهُ وَيَصِلُ مِنْهُ قَرَابَتَهُ وَيَحُجُّ لِيُغْفَرَ لَهُ مَا اكْتَسَبَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ الْحَسَناتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئاتِ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) إِنَّ الْخَطِيئَةَ لا تُكَفِّرُ الْخَطِيئَةَ وَلَكِنَّ الْحَسَنَةَ تَحُطُّ الْخَطِيئَةَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنْ كَانَ خَلَطَ الْحَلالَ بِالْحَرَامِ فَاخْتَلَطَا جَمِيعاً فَلا يَعْرِفُ الْحَلالَ مِنَ الْحَرَامِ فَلا بَأْسَ.

    9. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from abu Ayyub from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who had found a certain amount of property from banu ’Umayyah. He gives charity thereof, helps his relatives, performs al-Hajj therewith, so that Allah may forgive what he has earned and says, ’Good deeds remove bad deeds.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ’Sins do not expiate sins. Only good deeds remove sins.’ He (the Imam) then said, ’If he has mixed lawful with unlawful and is not able to distinguish, then it is not harmful.’”

    10- عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمَّادٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَقَدِمْنا إِلى‏ ما عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْناهُ هَباءً مَنْثُوراً فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ لأشَدَّ بَيَاضاً مِنَ الْقَبَاطِيِّ فَيَقُولُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَهَا كُونِي هَبَاءً وَذَلِكَ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا شُرِعَ لَهُمُ الْحَرَامُ أَخَذُوهُ.

Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Salih ibn abu Hammad from ibn abu ‘Umayr from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “About the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘We arrived upon what they had done and turned it into scattered dust’, (25:25) abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Even if their deeds are whiter than Coptic fabrics Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, “Become dust.” It is because when they come upon unlawful matters they take it.’”

    1- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَأَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ رِئَابٍ عَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنِ الْغُلُولِ قَالَ كُلُّ شَيْ‏ءٍ غُلَّ مِنَ الإمَامِ فَهُوَ سُحْتٌ وَأَكْلُ مَالِ الْيَتِيمِ وَشِبْهُهُ سُحْتٌ وَالسُّحْتُ أَنْوَاعٌ كَثِيرَةٌ مِنْهَا أُجُورُ الْفَوَاجِرِ وَثَمَنُ الْخَمْرِ وَالنَّبِيذِ الْمُسْكِرِ وَالرِّبَا بَعْدَ الْبَيِّنَةِ فَأَمَّا الرِّشَا فِي الْحُكْمِ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ الْكُفْرُ بِاللهِ الْعَظِيمِ وَبِرَسُولِهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه).

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Ri’ab from ‘Ammar ibn Marwan who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about seizing (other’s assets). He (the Imam) said, ‘Whatever of the belonging of the Imam seized is Suht (unlawful like filth), consuming the properties of orphans is Suht, involvement in doubtful matters is Suht and there are many forms of Suht. Of such matters is payment for indecent (sexual) relation, payment for wine and intoxicating beer and receiving unlawful interest, after having clear proof, is Suht. A bribe, however, is disbelief in Allah, most Great and His Messenger, ‘O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause.”’

    2- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ السُّحْتُ ثَمَنُ الْمَيْتَةِ وَثَمَنُ الْكَلْبِ وَثَمَنُ الْخَمْرِ وَمَهْرُ الْبَغِيِّ وَالرِّشْوَةُ فِي الْحُكْمِ وَأَجْرُ الْكَاهِنِ.

    2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Receiving payment for carcasses, dogs, wine, indecent (sexual) relation and a bribe to issue a judgment and payment for foretelling is Suht (unlawful and filthy).”’

    3- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ الْجَامُورَانِيِّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ زُرْعَةَ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) السُّحْتُ أَنْوَاعٌ كَثِيرَةٌ مِنْهَا كَسْبُ الْحَجَّامِ إِذَا شَارَطَ وَأَجْرُ الزَّانِيَةِ وَثَمَنُ الْخَمْرِ فَأَمَّا الرِّشَا فِي الْحُكْمِ فَهُوَ الْكُفْرُ بِاللهِ الْعَظِيمِ.

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from al-Jamuraniy from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn abu Hamzah from Zur’ah from Sanaa ‘ah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘There are many kinds of Suht (unlawful and filthy). Of such matters is income from cupping on the basis of a condition (for payment), payment for indecent acts of (sexual) relation and payment for wine. Accepting a bribe is however, disbelief in Allah, most Great.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from ibn Muskan from Yazid ibn Farqad who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about Suht (unlawful and filthy). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is accepting a bribe to issue a judgment.’”

    5- عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ الْعَمَّارِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الأصَمِّ عَنْ مِسْمَعِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ الْعَامِرِيِّ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنْ ثَمَنِ الْكَلْبِ الَّذِي لا يَصِيدُ فَقَالَ سُحْتٌ فَأَمَّا الصَّيُودُ فَلا بَأْسَ.

    5. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Hashim from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn al-Walid al-‘Ammariy from Ibrahim al-Asamm from Misma’ ibn ‘Abd al-Malik from abu ‘Abd Allah al-‘Amiriy who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about payment for dogs that do not hunt. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is Suht (unlawful and filthy), however, payment for a hunting dog is not Suht (unlawful and filthy).”’

    6- عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمَّادٍ عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ عَنِ الشَّعِيرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ مَنْ بَاتَ سَاهِراً فِي كَسْبٍ وَلَمْ يُعْطِ الْعَيْنَ حَظَّهَا مِنَ النَّوْمِ فَكَسْبُهُ ذَلِكَ حَرَامٌ.

    6. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Salih ibn abu Hammad from more than one person from al-Shu’ayriy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one works the whole night without giving the eyes their share of sleep, such earning is unlawful.’”

    7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Shammun from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Asamm from Misma’ ibn ‘Abd al-Malik who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If a technician remains awake the whole night working, his earning becomes Suht (unlawful and filthy).’”

    8. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited earning of slave-girls because if they cannot find work, they fornicate, except for a slave-girl who knows a skill and she is better than a slave-boy who due to not knowing any skills, when unable to find work steals.’”

    1- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) أَوْعَدَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي مَالِ الْيَتِيمِ بِعُقُوبَتَيْنِ إِحْدَاهُمَا عُقُوبَةُ الآخِرَةِ النَّارُ وَأَمَّا عُقُوبَةُ الدُّنْيَا فَقَوْلُهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلْيَخْشَ الَّذِينَ لَوْ تَرَكُوا مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّةً ضِعافاً خافُوا عَلَيْهِمْ الآيَةَ يَعْنِي لِيَخْشَ أَنْ أَخْلُفَهُ فِي ذُرِّيَّتِهِ كَمَا صَنَعَ بِهَؤُلاءِ الْيَتَامَى.

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has issued two kinds of warnings about consuming properties of orphans. One is the suffering by the fire in the next life. The punishment in this life is mentioned in the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, “Those who leave behind weak offspring for whom he is afraid. . . .” (4:11) It means that one must be afraid of leaving behind weak offspring who will be treated as he has treated the orphans.’”

    2- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ عَجْلانَ أَبِي صَالِحٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنْ أَكْلِ مَالِ الْيَتِيمِ فَقَالَ هُوَ كَمَا قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوالَ الْيَتامى‏ ظُلْماً إِنَّما يَأْكُلُونَ فِي بُطُونِهِمْ ناراً وَسَيَصْلَوْنَ سَعِيراً ثُمَّ قَالَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ مَنْ عَالَ يَتِيماً حَتَّى يَنْقَطِعَ يُتْمُهُ أَوْ يَسْتَغْنِيَ بِنَفْسِهِ أَوْجَبَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَهُ الْجَنَّةَ كَمَا أَوْجَبَ النَّارَ لِمَنْ أَكَلَ مَالَ الْيَتِيمِ.

    2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim from ‘Ajlan abu Salih who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who consumes the properties of orphans. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is as Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, “Those who consume the properties of orphans unjustly, they only consume fire in their bellies and will feel the heat of the fire.” (4:12)’ He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said without my asking, ‘Whoever provides an orphan until his condition as an orphan is over and becomes self-sufficient Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, makes paradise certain for him as He makes the fire definite for those who consume the properties of orphans.’”

    3- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ فِي يَدِهِ مَالٌ لأيْتَامٍ فَيَحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهِ فَيَمُدُّ يَدَهُ فَيَأْخُذُهُ وَيَنْوِي أَنْ يَرُدَّهُ فَقَالَ لا يَنْبَغِي لَهُ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ إِلا الْقَصْدَ لا يُسْرِفُ فَإِنْ كَانَ مِنْ نِيَّتِهِ أَنْ لا يَرُدَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَهُوَ بِالْمَنْزِلِ الَّذِي قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوالَ الْيَتامى‏ ظُلْماً.

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who in his hand has properties of orphans and is needy. He extends his hand to take a certain amount with the intention to return. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not proper for him to consume it, except with moderation and without excess; but if his intention is not to return, he then is like the one about whom Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, “Those who consume the properties of orphans unjustly. . . .” (4:12)’”

    4- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْكَاهِلِيِّ قَالَ قِيلَ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) إِنَّا نَدْخُلُ عَلَى أَخٍ لَنَا فِي بَيْتِ أَيْتَامٍ وَمَعَهُمْ خَادِمٌ لَهُمْ فَنَقْعُدُ عَلَى بِسَاطِهِمْ وَنَشْرَبُ مِنْ مَائِهِمْ وَيَخْدُمُنَا خَادِمُهُمْ وَرُبَّمَا طَعِمْنَا فِيهِ الطَّعَامَ مِنْ عِنْدِ صَاحِبِنَا وَفِيهِ مِنْ طَعَامِهِمْ فَمَا تَرَى فِي ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَ فِي دُخُولِكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ مَنْفَعَةٌ لَهُمْ فَلا بَأْسَ وَإِنْ كَانَ فِيهِ ضَرَرٌ فَلا وَقَالَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) بَلِ الإنْسانُ عَلى‏ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ فَأَنْتُمْ لا يَخْفَى عَلَيْكُمْ وَقَدْ قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَإِنْ تُخالِطُوهُمْ فَإِخْوانُكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَاللهُ يَعْلَمُ الْمُفْسِدَ مِنَ الْمُصْلِحِ.

    4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd Allah ibn Yahya al-Kahily who has said the following: “Once it was said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘We visit a brother in belief in the house of orphans with their servant. We sit on their furnishings, drink from their water and their servant serves us and perhaps eat of the food of our friend in which there is the orphans’ food also. What do you say about it? He (the Imam) said, ‘If your visit is beneficial for them, it is not harmful and if it is harmful it is not permissible.’ He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Man is well aware of his own-self. It is not hidden from you that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, “If you mix with them they are your brothers in belief and Allah knows who is corrupt and who is improving and a peacemaker.’””

    5- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ ذُبْيَانَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ الأوْدِيِّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) إِنَّ لِيَ ابْنَةَ أَخٍ يَتِيمَةً فَرُبَّمَا أُهْدِيَ لَهَا الشَّيْ‏ءُ فَ‏آكُلُ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ أُطْعِمُهَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ الشَّيْ‏ءَ مِنْ مَالِي فَأَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ هَذَا بِهَذَا فَقَالَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) لا بَأْسَ.

    5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Dhubyan ibn Hakim al-Awdiy from Ali ibn al-Mughirah who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I have an orphan girl of my brother. At certain times gifts are given to her and I eat a certain amount thereof. Thereafter I feed her a certain amount from my properties and I say, “O Lord, this is for what I have used.” He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘It is not harmful.”’

    1- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) فِي قَوْلِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَمَنْ كانَ فَقِيراً فَلْيَأْكُلْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ فَقَالَ مَنْ كَانَ يَلِي شَيْئاً لِلْيَتَامَى وَهُوَ مُحْتَاجٌ لَيْسَ لَهُ مَا يُقِيمُهُ فَهُوَ يَتَقَاضَى أَمْوَالَهُمْ وَيَقُومُ فِي ضَيْعَتِهِمْ فَلْيَأْكُلْ بِقَدَرٍ وَلا يُسْرِفْ وَإِنْ كَانَ ضَيْعَتُهُمْ لا تَشْغَلُهُ عَمَّا يُعَالِجُ لِنَفْسِهِ فَلا يَرْزَأَنَّ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ شَيْئاً.

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “About the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘One who is poor can eat to the proper limit’, (4:6) abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is one who manages the properties of orphans but is needy and does not have anything to support himself. He collects debts that people owe to them (orphans) and looks after them, he can eat from their assets only what he needs without excess, but if their assets do not take his time to work for his own-self, then he must not use anything of the properties of the orphans.’”

    2- عُثْمَانُ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) عَنْ قَوْلِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَإِنْ تُخالِطُوهُمْ فَإِخْوانُكُمْ قَالَ يَعْنِي الْيَتَامَى إِذَا كَانَ الرَّجُلُ يَلِي لأيْتَامٍ فِي حَجْرِهِ فَلْيُخْرِجْ مِنْ مَالِهِ عَلَى قَدْرِ مَا يُخْرِجُ لِكُلِّ إِنْسَانٍ مِنْهُمْ فَيُخَالِطُهُمْ وَيَأْكُلُونَ جَمِيعاً وَلا يَرْزَأَنَّ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ شَيْئاً إِنَّمَا هِيَ النَّارُ.

    2. ‘Uthman has narrated from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “About the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘If you mix with them then they are your brothers in religion’, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is a reference to orphans. If one becomes the person-in-charge of the affairs of orphans, one must take from one’s own assets a certain amount, and equal to this amount from every one of the orphan assets take the same amount; then mix them for the use of all of them together. One must not use anything from their property; it is the fire.’”

    3- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَأَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) فِي قَوْلِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَلْيَأْكُلْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ قَالَ الْمَعْرُوفُ هُوَ الْقُوتُ وَإِنَّمَا عَنَى الْوَصِيَّ أَوِ الْقَيِّمَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَمَا يُصْلِحُهُمْ.

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ahmad ibn Muhammad from all from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “About the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘He must eat to the proper limit’, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Al-Ma‘ruf (proper limit) is what one needs for sustenance. It applies to the executor of the will or one who is appointed as the custodian of their assets and to work for their welfare.’”

    4- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ حَنَانِ بْنِ سَدِيرٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) سَأَلَنِي عِيسَى بْنُ مُوسَى عَنِ الْقَيِّمِ لِلْيَتَامَى فِي الإبِلِ وَمَا يَحِلُّ لَهُ مِنْهَا قُلْتُ إِذَا لاطَ حَوْضَهَا وَطَلَبَ ضَالَّتَهَا وَهَنَأَ جَرْبَاهَا فَلَهُ أَنْ يُصِيبَ مِنْ لَبَنِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ نَهْكٍ بِضَرْعٍ وَلا فَسَادٍ لِنَسْلٍ.

    4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il from Hanan ibn Sadir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ‘Isa ibn Musa asked about guardians of orphans, camels and what is lawful in matters of camels. I said, ‘If he repairs their water tank, finds the lost ones, scratches their itch, he then is entitled to use their milk without excessive use of their udder or harming their young.’”
