4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Safwan from Ya’qub ibn Shu’ayb who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who gave impure dirhams as a loan to another man, who then paid him back with better dirhams without compulsion. He (the Imam) said, Tt is not unlawful and it is from Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam.’”
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Yunus ibn Ya’qub from abu Maryam who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, whenever owing something to someone would pay back heavier.’”
6. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from Safwan from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who borrowed from another man dirham and returned with a Mithqal (a certain unit of weight) or borrowed a Mithqal and paid back with dirham. He (the Imam) said, ‘If there is no stipulation it is not unlawful, it is only extra. My father would borrow dirhams of low quality and pay back with dirhams of high quality and say to me, “My son, pay it back to the one from whom I have borrowed.” I would say, “Father, the dirhams you borrowed were of low quality and these are better.” He (the Imam) would say, ‘My son, it is an extra favor. Give it back to him.’”
7. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Ali ibn al-Nu’man from Ya’qub ibn Shu’ayb who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who owed a basket of dry dates and got back a basket of fresh dates which was less. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ I then asked, ‘What will happen if he owes to me a basket of dry dates and I take from him a basket of fresh dates which is more?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful if it is a known practice between the two of you.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from abu Ayyub from Muhammad ibn Muslim and others who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who asked for a loan. He left al-Rahn (security deposit) like a servant or utensils or cloths. The party needed to benefit from them, so he asked permission and he gave permission. He (the Imam) said, Tf permission is given without compulsion it is not unlawful/ I then said, Tn our area people see it as if every loan brings benefits. Is it invalid?’ He (the Imam) said, Ts it not a fact that the best loans are those which attract benefits?’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Safwan from ibn Bukayr from Muhammad ibn ‘Abdah who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, if loan attracted benefits. He (the Imam) said, ‘The best loan is that which attracts benefits.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Bishr ibn Muslimah from more than one person who reported who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The best loan is that which attracts benefits.’”
4. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who came to me; I bought for him goods from people and guaranteed payment on his behalf. Then he came to me with dirham. I took and withheld them from their owner, then took the good quality dirhams and gave them of lower quality. He (the Imam) said, ‘He guaranteed payment, perhaps it became severe upon him so he hurried to pay before he (the guarantor) asks for payment. He (the guarantor) withholds payment after receiving, it is not unlawful.’”
1. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Ali ibn al-Nu’man from Ya’qub Shu’ayb who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who made an advance payment with the xvariq (dirham) so that the other could pay him in cash in another land and make it a condition. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘It is not unlawful if a man takes dirhams in Makkah and writes for them (his people) notes to pay them in al-Kufah.’”
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Nu’man from abu al-Sabbah who has said the following: “About the case of a man who wants to send goods to a land, if the one with whom he wants to send says, ‘Give this to me as a loan and I will pay you when you reach that land, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from ibn abu Najran from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said, ‘We dislike sailing on the sea for business.’”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated in a marfu’ manner the following: “Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘has said, ‘How beautiful is the quest for trade to sail on the sea!”’ [Note: H 9118 and H 9119 appear to occur during two different eras, perhaps of safe and unsafe sailing times]
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ali ibn Asbat who has said the following: “I had carried goods with me to Makkah. I faced severe competition there so I went to visit abu al- Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and told him (the Imam) that I had carried goods to Makkah but I faced competition and I decided to travel to Egypt. Should I travel by land or by sea? He (the Imam) said, ’Egypt is destructive. It wrecks the youngest in age. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, “How beautiful is sailing on the sea in quest for trade.’” He (the Imam) said, ‘It will not be against you if you go to the shrine of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, perform near him two Rak’at Salat (prayer) and ask Allah for what is good, one hundred times; then whatever decision comes to your mind follow that decision. When you ride say, “All praise belongs to Allah who has made it possible for us when we were not able to reach it. To our Lord, we return.” After you sail on the sea in the ship say, “In the name of Allah who has made it to flow and sail. My Lord is forgiving and merciful.” If waves agitate on you, lean to your left and make a gesture to your right to the waves and say, “Calm down through the calmness of Allah and be tranquil through tranquility of Allah. There is no means and power except the power and means of Allah, the most High, most Great.’” “Ali ibn Asbat has said, ‘I sailed on the sea and waves rose. I would say what I was told to say. It would break into pieces as if there was nothing.’ Ali ibn Asbat has said, ‘I asked him (the Imam) saying I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what is al-Sakinah ?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is a wind from paradise with a face like the face of the human being, more sweet smelling than musk, and it is the one Allah sent to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, in Hunayn (name of a place) which defeated the pagans.’”
4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from Hammad from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘In sailing on the sea for trade one is deceived in his religion.’”
5. It is narrated from him from his father from Safwan from Mu’alla’ abu ‘ Uthman from Mu’alla’ ibn al-Khunayth who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who traveled and sailed on the sea. He (the Imam) said, ‘My father would say that it causes harms to one’s religion. There are people who find their livelihood and sustenance.’”
6. It is narrated from him from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Hashim from Husayn ibn abu al-‘Ala’ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once a man came to abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and said, ‘We work for business in these mountains and come upon areas where we cannot perform Salat (prayer) except on snow. He (the Imam) said, ‘Why can you not be like so and so who is happy with less and does not demand such things because of which he cannot performing Salat (prayer) except on snow.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from ibn Muskan from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “Ali ibn Al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is of a man’s good fortune to have his place of business where he lives, to have virtuous associates and children who support him.’”
2. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ali ibn Al-Husayn al-Tamimiy from Ja’far ibn Bakr from ‘Abd Allah ibn abu Sahl ibn ‘Abd al-Karim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Three factors help a man enjoy good fortune: One is a cooperating wife, virtuous and kind children, and he finds his living where he lives and is present in his family every morning and evenings.’”
3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from ibn Muskan from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Ali ibn Al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is of a man’s good fortune to have his place of business where he lives, to have virtuous associates and children who support him. It is misfortune of a man to have a conceited wife who is treacherous toward him.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ’Umayr from Hammad from af-Halabiy from abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, who has said the following: "This is about the two men who had a business partnership with a certain amount of asset in which they made a certain amount of profit, there, however, was a loan against that asset which both had to pay. One of them asked the other to give him the capital in exchange for the profit and payment of loan. The Imam said, ‘There is no offense in such deal provided they had established such condition, however, if the condition is against the book of Allah it then is a rejection of the book of Allah.’"
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “About two men who each had a certain amount of grain in the possession of the other but no one of them knew how much was the amount, and each one of them had said to the other one, ‘You can have whatever amount of grain is with you and I will have the amount which is with me,’ one of the two Imam, (abu Ja’far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘There is no offense in such settlement upon which both have mutually agreed/”
3. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu’alla ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Aban from those who narrated to him who has said the following: “I once asked the Imam, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man to whom another man owed a certain amount of loan who before the due date asked the borrower to pay him half of the loan so he then might cancel the other half in favor of the borrower. He (the Imam) said, ‘Such settlement is lawful.”
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked the Imam about one who before due date of payment, asked a man who owed him a certain amount, to pay him a certain amount and he might write off the rest or extend the due date for payment in his favor. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not see any offense in such deal as long as he does not increase his capital. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, “Your capital belongs to you. (In a deal where you) receive your capital you are not doing any injustice nor is any injustice done to you.” (2:279)’”
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hafs al-Bakhtariy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Settlement by means of mutual agreement is permissible for people.’”
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Ali ibn abu Hamzah who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. ‘There are four thousand dirhams of a Jew or a Christian and he has died. Is it permissible to reach a settlement about it with his heirs without informing them of the amount?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, until you inform them of the amount.’”
7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ’Isa, from Muhammad ibn ’Isa from ibn Bukayr from ’Umar ibn Yazid who has said the following: "I once asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a man who has bailed out another man and has reached a settlement with him.’ He (the Imam) said, ’He can only have the actual amount the man owes to him.”’
8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ’Isma’il from Muhammad ibn ’Adhafir from ’Umar ibn Yazid who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’If one owes a certain amount of debts to another person and he delays payment until the creditor dies and then he reaches a settlement with such person’s heirs whatever they receive belongs to them and the remaining belongs to the deceased who will acquire from him in the next life; but if he does not reach any settlement with the heirs of the deceased all of the loan belongs to the deceased for which the borrower will be held responsible.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from certain persons of his people from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Muhammad ibn ‘Atiyyah who has said the following: “I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has chosen farming and plantation for His prophets so that they will not dislike the drops falling from the sky.”’
2. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad in a marfu’ manner the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah has placed means of the sustenance of His prophets in agriculture and stock farming so that they will not dislike drops falling from the sky.’”
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Khalid from Sayabah who has said the following: “A man once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I hear a people who say that farming is Makruh (detestable).’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You must farm and plant, by Allah, there is no work that people do which is sweeter and fine than farming. By Allah, farming will be done as well as plantations even after the emergence of al- Dajjal.’”
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ibn Mahbub from al-Hassan ibn ‘Umarah from Misma’ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When Adam descended to earth he needed food and drinks and he complained to Jibril. Jibril said to him, ‘O Adam, be a farmer.’ He said, ‘Teach me a prayer.’ Jibril said, ‘Say: “O Lord, protect me against the worldly impediments and all horrors that are before reaching paradise and dress me in good health so life becomes pleasant for me.’”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘My father, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would say, “The best work is farming in which you plant, and the virtuous as well as sinful ones eat. The virtuous on eating asks forgiveness for you and the sinful one on eating it is condemned; and even animals and birds eat thereof.’”
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was asked, ‘Are assets (belongings) good?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘An owner farms and maintains it, then pays the dues on it on the day of harvest. What asset is better than farms?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘A man tends sheep, takes them to pasture, performs Salat (prayer), pays Zakat. What asset is better than sheep?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Cows go out safely and come back in the evening safely. What asset is better than cows?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Firmly established palm trees reach moisture, the grafted ones produce sweet. How good is palm tree! One who sells them must notice that its price is like dust on a high place in a stormy windy day unless one replaces it.’ It was asked, £ 0 Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, what kind of asset is better after palm trees?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) remained calm for a while. A man then stood up and said, £ 0 Messenger of Allah, what about camel? He (the Messenger of Allah) said, £ In it there are misfortune, injustice, fatigue and farness from home. In the morning it is a loss and in the evening it is a loss. Its benefit comes only from its unfortunate side. It always is with the wicked sinful ones.’” It is narrated from abu £ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that farming is the great alchemy.

Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ibrahim ibn Ishaq from al-Hassan ibn al-Sariy from al-Hassan ibn Ibrahim from Yazid ibn Harun who has said the following: “I once heard abu £ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ’Farmers are the mines of living creatures. They farm goodness that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, makes to grow and on the Day of Judgment they will have the best position and the closest place and they are called the blessed ones.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Salmah ibn al-Khattab from Ibrahim ibn ‘Uqbah from Salih ibn Ali ibn ‘Atiyyah from a whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once passed by a people of al-Ansar who were farming and he (the Imam) said to them, ‘Continue farming; the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, “Allah causes it to grow by wind as He does so by water.’” They farmed and their farm turned out good.”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from ibn Muskan from Sadir who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘The Israelites went to Moses and asked him to ask Allah to make the sky rain on them only when they wanted and stop it from raining when they wanted. Moses asked Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, said, ‘O Moses, they can have it as they wanted.’ Moses informed them about it and they cultivated and farmed all they wanted. They then asked for rain whenever they wanted and stopped it as they wanted. Their farms grew like mountains and thick brushwood. They then harvested, threshed and exposed it to the wind (to separate the grain from the hay) but did not find anything. They expressed their anger to Moses and said, ‘We only asked you to ask Allah to send rain for us when we wanted and He agreed, but then He made it harmful to us.’ Moses then said, ‘O Lord, the Israelites have shown exasperation for what You have done to them.’ Allah asked, ‘What is it that I have done to them, O Moses?’ Moses said, ‘They asked me to ask You to send rain on them only when they wanted and stop it when they wanted. You agreed but then made it harmful to them.’ Allah said, ‘O Moses, I was measuring it for the Israelites but they were not happy with My measurement for them, then I agreed to leave it to their will, then it happened as you have seen.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ibn ‘Udhaynah from ibn Bukayr who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When you like to plant something, take a handful of seed, face al-Qiblah (al-Ka’bah) and say, “Have you seen what you cultivate? Do you cultivate it or We are the ones who cultivate.” (56:62-63) Then say, “In fact Allah is the cultivator” three times then say, “O Lord, make it blessed grain and provide us safety in it.” Then spread the handful from your hand on the plain ground.’”
2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Shu’ayb al-‘Aqarqufiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘At the time of spreading seed say, “O Lord, I have spread the seed and You are the cultivator; so make it to produce plentiful grains.”’”
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ahmad ‘Umar al-Jallab from al- Hudayniy from ibn ‘Arfah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one wants to pollinate palm trees which are not good in their conception and do not accept pollens, he can take small fish, crush them between the two grinding plates and place a little of it in every sprouting element, keep the remaining in a bag and place in the center of the tree, it will be useful by the permission of ‘Allah.’”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il from Salih ibn ‘Uqbah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, ‘I saw your garden, have you planted anything in it yet?’ I said, ‘I wanted to take small stems from your garden and plant them.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Allow me to tell you what is better than this and quicker.’ I replied, ‘Yes please do so.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘When dates ripen and you are about to pick them as fresh dates, plant them, it (the crop) will produce just like what you planted.’ I followed the instruction and it (the crop) grew exactly like it.’”
5. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from in a marfu’ manner the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When you plant a tree or plantation, say with every twig or deed, “Free of all defect is One who raises and inherits”, it then cannot fail, by the will of Allah.’”
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from in a marfu’ manner the following: “One of the two Imam, (abu Ja’far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘When you plant or cultivate read, “The likeness of the blessed word is like that of a blessed tree with firmly established roots and branches that rise into the sky. It produces fruits all the time, by the will of its Lord.’””
7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about cutting down a lotus tree. He (the Imam) said, ‘One of your people asked me about it and I wrote to him that abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once cut down a lotus tree and planted in its place grape-vines.’”
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from ‘Ammar ibn Musa who has narrated the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that cutting down of palm trees is detestable. He (the Imam) was asked about cutting down of trees. He (the Imam) replied, ‘It is not unlawful.’ I then asked about cutting down of lotus trees. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful. It is detestable to cut them down in the wilderness because it is very rare there, however, here it is plentiful.’”
9. It is narrated from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Al-Husayn ibn Bashir from ibn Mudarib who has narrated the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must not cut down a fruit bearing tree; Allah will send on you a great suffering.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from and Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from ‘Abd al-Karim from Sama‘ah from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must not rent land in exchange for wheat, barley, dates, canals or small amount of water, but you can do so in exchange for gold or silver; gold and silver are guaranteed and those are not guaranteed.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Safwan from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must not rent land in exchange for dates, wheat, barley, al-Arbi‘a’ or al-Nitaf.’ I then asked, ‘What is al-Arbi‘a?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is a small amount of water and al-Nitaf means extra water, but rent it in exchange for gold or silver, for half of the produce, one-third or one-fourth.’”
3. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from ibn Muskan from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must not rent land in exchange for wheat where you plant wheat.’”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Tha’labah ibn Maymun from Burayd who has said the following: “About the case of a man who accepts dinar or dirham for (the rent of) land, abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, has said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”
