   مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبِي الْمَغْرَاءِ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الصَّيْدِ يُصِيبُهُ السَّهْمُ مُعْتَرِضاً وَ لَمْ يُصِبْهُ بِحَدِيدَةٍ وَ قَدْ سَمَّى حِينَ رَمَى قَالَ يَأْكُلُهُ إِذَا أَصَابَهُ وَ هُوَ يَرَاهُوَ عَنْ صَيْدِ الْمِعْرَاضِ فَقَالَ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ نَبْلٌ غَيْرُهُ وَ كَانَ قَدْ سَمَّى حِينَ رَمَى فَلْيَأْكُلْ مِنْهُ وَ إِنْ كَانَ لَهُ نَبْلٌ غَيْرُهُ فَلَا .

   5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from abu al-Mighra’ from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a prey which is hit by an arrow widthwise and no iron part has hit it. He had mentioned the name of Allah when shooting. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can use it for food if it hits and he sees it hitting.’ I asked him (the Imam) about hunting with flareless arrows. He (the Imam) said, ‘If he has no other arrow and he has mentioned the name of Allah when shooting, he can use it for food; but if he had other arrows then he cannot use it for food.’”

   1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Once, abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about a prey killed by stone or clay-ball; if it is edible. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it cannot be used for food. 5 ”

Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked one of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about a prey killed with a stone or clay-ball; if it can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not edible.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from Hisham ibn Salim from Sulayman ibn Khalid who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a prey killed with a stone or clay-ball; if it can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not edible.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ibn abu Nasr from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin, from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Once, I asked one of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a prey. A stone or clay-ball kills it if it is edible. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not edible.’”

   6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim who has narrated the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, disliked al-Julahiq (a kind of clay-ball).”

   أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فِي الرَّجُلِ يَرْمِي بِالْبُنْدُقِ وَ الْحَجَرِ فَيَقْتُلُ أَ فَيَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ قَالَ لَا تَأْكُلْ .

   7. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from ibn Faddal from Ahmad ibn ‘Umar from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “About the case of a man who hits a prey with a stone or clay-ball and kills it; if he can use it for food, he (the Imam) said, ‘Do not eat it.’”

   عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ وَ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجْرَانَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) مَا أَخَذَتِ الْحِبَالَةُ مِنْ صَيْدٍ فَقَطَعَتْ مِنْهُ يَداً أَوْ رِجْلًا فَذَرُوهُ فَإِنَّهُ مَيِّتٌ وَ كُلُوا مَا أَدْرَكْتُمْ حَيّاً وَ ذَكَرْتُمُ اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَيْهِ .

   1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr and ibn abu Najran from ‘Asem ibn Hamid from Muhammad ibn Qays who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’If a prey is caught by a snare, whatever is cut off like a leg or so, must be thrown away; it is dead. You can use the rest that you find alive and the name of Allah was mentioned on it.’”

    حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَا أَخَذَتِ الْحِبَالَةُ فَقَطَعَتْ مِنْهُ شَيْئاً فَهُوَ مَيِّتٌ وَ مَا أَدْرَكْتَ مِنْ سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ حَيّاً فَذَكِّهِ ثُمَّ كُلْ مِنْهُ .

    2. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah from more than one person from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from ‘ Abd al-Rahman ibn abu ‘ Abd Allah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If a prey is caught in a snare and certain part of it is cut off, it is dead, but what you find alive of the rest of the body you can slaughter it properly and use it for food.”’

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَا أَخَذَتِ الْحِبَالَةُ فَقَطَعَتْ مِنْهُ شَيْئاً فَهُوَ مَيِّتٌ وَ مَا أَدْرَكْتَ مِنْ سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ حَيّاً فَذَكِّهِ ثُمَّ كُلْ مِنْهُ .

    3. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Whatever of a prey is caught in the snare is dead and whatever of the rest of the body you find alive, slaughter it properly; then you can use it for food.’”

    أَبَانٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَا أَخَذَتِ الْحِبَالَةُ فَانْقَطَعَ مِنْهُ شَيْ‏ءٌ أَوْ مَاتَ فَهُوَ مَيْتَةٌ .

    4. Aban has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Whatever of the prey is caught in the snare which is cut off or has died is dead.’”

    أَبَانٌ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَا أَخَذَتِ الْحَبَائِلُ فَقَطَعَتْ مِنْهُ شَيْئاً فَهُوَ مَيِّتٌ وَ مَا أَدْرَكْتَ مِنْ سَائِرِ جَسَدِهِ فَذَكِّهِ ثُمَّ كُلْ مِنْهُ .

    5. Aban has narrated from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Whatever of a prey is caught in the snare and is cutoff, it is dead, but what you find alive of the rest of the body, you can slaughter it properly and use it for food.’”

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Hajjaj from Khalid ibn al-Hajj aj who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not eat the prey that falls in water and dies.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ رَمَى صَيْداً وَ هُوَ عَلَى جَبَلٍ أَوْ حَائِطٍ فَيَخْرِقُ فِيهِ السَّهْمُ فَيَمُوتُ فَقَالَ كُلْ مِنْهُ وَ إِنْ وَقَعَ فِي الْمَاءِ مِنْ رَمْيَتِكَ فَمَاتَ فَلَا تَأْكُلْ مِنْهُ .

    2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about the case of a man who shoots a prey on a mountain or wall. The arrow pierces into it and it dies. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can use it for food; but if it falls in water and dies, then do not eat it. 5 ” Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy from ‘Abd Allah ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has narrated a similar Hadith. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from certain persons of our people from Hisham ibn Salim from Sama‘ah from ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has narrated a similar Hadith.

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ رَجُلٍ سَمَّى وَ رَمَى صَيْداً فَأَخْطَأَهُ وَ أَصَابَ آخَرَ فَقَالَ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abbad ibn Suhayb who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who shoots a prey and mentions the name of Allah, but misses it and hits another one. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can use it for food.’”

    محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن أحمد بن محمد بن أبي نصر قال: سألت الرضا عليه السلام عن طروق الطير بالليل في وكرها، فقال: لا بأس بذلك (1). أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن علي بن أحمد بن أشيم، عن صفوان بن يحيى، عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام مثله.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “I once asked al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about hunting birds at night in their nests. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’” Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa has narrated from Ahmad ibn ‘Ushaym from Safwan ibn Yahya from abu al-Hassan al-Rida; ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has narrated a similar Hadith.

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفُضَيْلِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا تَأْتُوا الْفِرَاخَ فِي أَعْشَاشِهَا وَ لَا الطَّيْرَ فِي مَنَامِهِ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ وَ مَا مَنَامُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ اللَّيْلُ مَنَامُهُ فَلَا تَطْرُقْهُ فِي مَنَامِهِ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ وَ لَا تَأْتُوا الْفَرْخَ فِي عُشِّهِ حَتَّى يَرِيشَ وَ يَطِيرَ فَإِذَا طَارَ فَأَوْتِرْ لَهُ قَوْسَكَ وَ انْصِبْ لَهُ فَخَّكَ .

    2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah, from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Do not go to the baby birds in their nests at night or to the birds during their sleep [until the morning].’ A man then asked, ‘What is during their sleep, O Messenger of Allah?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Night is their sleep, so do not enter in its sleep until the morning. Do not go to the baby birds in their nests until its feathers grow to fly. When it flies then aim your bow at it and fix for it your net.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ مِسْمَعٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) عَنْ إِتْيَانِ الطَّيْرِ بِاللَّيْلِ وَ قَالَ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ اللَّيْلَ أَمَانٌ لَهَا .

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Shammun from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman from Misma‘ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited hunting birds during the night, saying that the night is sanctuary for them.’”

    1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about catching fish without a mention of the name of Allah. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنِ الْمُفَضَّلِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الشَّحَّامِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ صَيْدِ الْحِيتَانِ وَ إِنْ لَمْ يُسَمَّ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ إِنْ كَانَ حَيّاً أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ .

    2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from al-Mufaddal ibn Salih from Zayd al-Shahham who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about catching fish without a mention of the name of Allah. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful if it is alive when he catches it.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَيَابَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ السَّمَكِ يُصَادُ ثُمَّ يُجْعَلُ فِي شَيْ‏ءٍ ثُمَّ يُعَادُ إِلَى الْمَاءِ فَيَمُوتُ فِيهِ فَقَالَ لَا تَأْكُلْهُ .

    3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Aban from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn Sayabah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about fish which is caught, then placed in something but it returns into the water and dies in it. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not use it for food.”’

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ رَجُلٍ اصْطَادَ سَمَكَةً فَرَبَطَهَا بِخَيْطٍ وَ أَرْسَلَهَا فِي الْمَاءِ فَمَاتَتْ أَ تُؤْكَلُ قَالَ لَا .

    4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from abu Ayyub who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who catches fish, then ties it to a string, then sends it in the water where it dies; if he can use it for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, he must not use it for food.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ صَيْدِ الْمَجُوسِيِّ لِلسَّمَكِ حِينَ يَضْرِبُونَ بِالشَّبَكِ وَ لَا يُسَمُّونَ وَ كَذَلِكَ الْيَهُودِيُّ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِنَّمَا صَيْدُ الْحِيتَانِ أَخْذُهَا .

    5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about fishing by Zoroastrian and Jews by means of fishing nets without a mention of the name of Allah. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful, fishing is to catch it alive.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْحِيتَانِ الَّتِي يَصِيدُهَا الْمَجُوسِيُّ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عَلِيّاً ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ يَقُولُ الْحِيتَانُ وَ الْجَرَادُ ذَكِيٌّ .

    6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim from Sulayman ibn Khalid who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the fish caught by Zoroastrians. He (the Imam) said that Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would say, ‘Fish and locusts are clean (slaughtered properly).”’

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ أَبِي حَفْصٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ عَلِيّاً ( صلوات الله عليه ) كَانَ يَقُولُ فِي صَيْدِ السَّمَكَةِ إِذَا أَدْرَكَهَا الرَّجُلُ وَ هِيَ تَضْطَرِبُ وَ تَضْرِبُ بِيَدَيْهَا وَ يَتَحَرَّكُ ذَنَبُهَا وَ تَطْرِفُ بِعَيْنِهَا فَهِيَ ذَكَاتُهَا .

    7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Aban from Salmah abu Hafs who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about catching fish would say, ‘When a man catches fish and it struggles, hits with its fins, moves its back fins and looks with its eyes, this is its properly slaughtering.’”

    أَبَانٌ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ صَيْدِ الْمَجُوسِيِّ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ إِذَا أَعْطَوْكَهَا حَيّاً وَ السَّمَكَ أَيْضاً وَ إِلَّا فَلَا تُجِزْ شَهَادَتَهُمْ إِلَّا أَنْ تَشْهَدَهُ أَنْتَ .

    8. Aban has narrated from ‘Isa ibn ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the hunting by Zoroastrians. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful, if he gives it to you alive as well as the fish also, otherwise, their testimony is not acceptable unless you witness its being fished alive.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ صَيْدِ الْمَجُوسِيِّ لِلْحِيتَانِ حِينَ يَضْرِبُونَ عَلَيْهَا بِالشِّبَاكِ وَ يُسَمُّونَ بِالشِّرْكِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِصَيْدِهِمْ إِنَّمَا صَيْدُ الْحِيتَانِ أَخْذُهُقَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْحَظِيرَةِ مِنَ الْقَصَبِ تُجْعَلُ فِي الْمَاءِ لِلْحِيتَانِ تَدْخُلُ فِيهَا الْحِيتَانُ فَيَمُوتُ بَعْضُهَا فِيهَا فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ إِنَّ تِلْكَ الْحَظِيرَةَ إِنَّمَا جُعِلَتْ لِيُصَادَ بِهَا .

    9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about the fishing by Zoroastrian by means of fishing nets and with a mention of the pagan consecration expressions. He (the Imam) said, ‘Their fishing is not unlawful; fishing is catching them (alive).’ I then asked about a barricade of reeds with water in it for fish. Fish enters it and certain ones of them die in it. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful; the barricade is set for fishing.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ بُرَيْدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) فِي الرَّجُلِ يَنْصِبُ شَبَكَةً فِي الْمَاءِ ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ إِلَى بَيْتِهِ وَ يَتْرُكُهَا مَنْصُوبَةً وَ يَأْتِيهَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ وَ قَدْ وَقَعَ فِيهَا سَمَكٌ فَيَمُتْنَ فَقَالَ مَا عَمِلَتْ يَدُهُ فَلَا بَأْسَ بِأَكْلِ مَا وَقَعَ فِيهَا .

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from fadalah from al-Qasim ibn Burayd from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “It is the case of a man who sets a fishing net in water, then returns home leaving the net in water when thereafter he comes back he finds fish caught in it but they are dead. Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, has said, ‘It is what his hands have done. It is not unlawful and he can use what is in it for food.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنِ الْعَمْرَكِيِّ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ سَمَكَةٍ وَثَبَتْ مِنْ نَهَرٍ فَوَقَعَتْ عَلَى الْجُدِّ مِنَ النَّهَرِ فَمَاتَتْ هَلْ يَصْلُحُ أَكْلُهَا فَقَالَ إِنْ أَخَذْتَهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَمُوتَ ثُمَّ مَاتَتْ فَكُلْهَا وَ إِنْ مَاتَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تَأْخُذَهَا فَلَا تَأْكُلْهَا .

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy ibn Ali from Ali ibn Ja‘far from his brother, Musa ibn Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a fish that jumps out of the canal and lands on the side and it then dies: if it can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘If you pick it up before it dies you can use it for food but if it dies before you pick it up, then do not use it for food.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ عَلِيّاً ( عليه السلام ) سُئِلَ عَنْ سَمَكَةٍ شُقَّ بَطْنُهَا فَوُجِدَ فِيهَا سَمَكَةٌ فَقَالَ كُلْهُمَا جَمِيعاً .

    12. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about fish inside which another fish is found. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can use both of them for food.’”

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ لَا بَأْسَ بِالسَّمَكِ الَّذِي يَصِيدُهُ الْمَجُوسِيُّ .

    13. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘It is not unlawful to use for food the fish which is caught by Zoroastrians.’”

    أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْكُوفِيِّ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قُلْتُ رَجُلٌ اصْطَادَ سَمَكَةً فَوَجَدَ فِي جَوْفِهَا سَمَكَةً فَقَالَ يُؤْكَلَانِ جَمِيعاً .

    14. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Kufiy from al-‘Abbas ibn ‘Amir from Aban from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who catches a fish and finds another fish inside it. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can use both of them for food.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْعَدَةَ بْنِ صَدَقَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ إِذَا ضَرَبَ صَاحِبُ الشَّبَكَةِ بِالشَّبَكَةِ فَمَا أَصَابَ فِيهَا مِنْ حَيٍّ أَوْ مَيِّتٍ فَهُوَ حَلَالٌ مَا خَلَا مَا لَيْسَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ وَ لَا يُؤْكَلُ الطَّافِي مِنَ السَّمَكِ .

    15. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Harun ibn Muslim from Mas’adah ibn Sadaqah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘I heard my father saying, “If a man sets a fishing net whatever is caught in it dead or alive is lawful for food, except that which does not have scales and the dead fish floating on the water.’””

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ أَعْيَنَ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ أَعْيَنَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ مَا تَقُولُ فِي حَيَّةٍ ابْتَلَعَتْ سَمَكَةً ثُمَّ طَرَحَتْهَا وَ هِيَ حَيَّةٌ تَضْطَرِبُ أَ فَآكُلُهَا فَقَالَ ( عليه السلام ) إِنْ كَانَتْ فُلُوسُهَا قَدْ تَسَلَّخَتْ فَلَا تَأْكُلْهَا وَ إِنْ كَانَتْ لَمْ تَتَسَلَّخْ فَكُلْهَا .

    16. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from Ahmad ibn al-Mubarak, from Salih ibn ‘A‘yan from al-Washsha’ from Ayyub ibn ‘A‘yan who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause. What do you say about a snake that has swallowed a fish then has thrown it out and it still is alive and struggling; if it can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘If its scales are peeled off then do not use it for food; but if it is not peeled off you can use it for food.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ مَرْوَكِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) نَهَى أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) أَنْ يَتَصَيَّدَ الرَّجُلُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَبْلَ الصَّلَاةِ وَ كَانَ ( عليه السلام ) يَمُرُّ بِالسَّمَّاكِينَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَيَنْهَاهُمْ عَنْ أَنْ يَتَصَيَّدُوا مِنَ السَّمَكِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَبْلَ الصَّلَاةِ .

    17. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Musa from al-‘ Abbas ibn Ma’ruf from Marwak ibn ‘Ubayd from Sama‘ah ibn Mehran who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin prohibited a man’s fishing on Fridays before Salat (prayer). He, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would go to the fish market on Fridays and prohibit them from fishing on Fridays before Friday Salat (prayer).”’

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ ذَكَرَ الطَّافِيَ وَ مَا يَكْرَهُ النَّاسُ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا الطَّافِي مِنَ السَّمَكِ الْمَكْرُوهُ وَ هُوَ مَا يَتَغَيَّرُ رَائِحَتُهُ .

    18. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Once, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, mentioned fish which floats on water and what people dislike. He (the Imam) said, ‘The fish floating on the water are disliked because their smell has changed.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ وَ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ أَقْرَأَنِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) شَيْئاً مِنْ كِتَابِ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) فَإِذَا فِيهِ أَنْهَاكُمْ عَنِ الْجِرِّيِّ وَ الزِّمِّيرِ وَ الْمَارْمَاهِي وَ الطَّافِي وَ الطِّحَالِ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ إِنَّا نُؤْتَى بِالسَّمَكِ لَيْسَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ فَقَالَ كُلْ مَا لَهُ قِشْرٌ مِنَ السَّمَكِ وَ مَا لَيْسَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ فَلَا تَأْكُلْهُ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from ibn Mahbub and Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr all from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Once abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, made me read something from the books of Aii, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. Therein I found this: T prohibit you from using eel for food, al-Zimir, (a certain kind of fish), Mar mahi (something like fish), snake fish, dead fish floating on water and the spleen.’ I then asked, ‘O child of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah grant you kindness, ’People bring to us a kind of fish that has no scales.’ He (the Imam) said, ’You can use for food of fish that which has scales and do not use for food the kind of fish which has no scales.’”

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ الْحِيتَانُ مَا يُؤْكَلُ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ مَا كَانَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْكَنْعَتِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِأَكْلِهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ فَقَالَ لِي بَلَى وَ لَكِنَّهَا سَمَكَةٌ سَيِّئَةُ الْخُلُقِ تَحْتَكُّ بِكُلِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ وَ إِذَا نَظَرْتَ فِي أَصْلِ أُذُنِهَا وَجَدْتَ لَهَا قِشْراً .

    2. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ’I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, of fish which kind is edible?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The kind of fish that has scales is edible.’ I then asked, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what do you say about al-Kan‘at (a kind of fish with very little scales). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful to use it for food.’ I then said, ‘It does not have scales?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it has scales but it is a bad mannered fish and it sticks to everything. If you look at the base of its ears you can find scales.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْهُمَا ( عليهما السلام ) أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ يَكْرَهُ الْجِرِّيثَ وَ قَالَ لَا تَأْكُلُوا مِنَ السَّمَكِ إِلَّا شَيْئاً عَلَيْهِ فُلُوسٌ وَ كَرِهَ الْمَارْمَاهِيَ .

    3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad from Hariz from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “One of the two Imam, (abu Ja’far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al- Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, disliked eel. He (the Imam) had said, ‘Do not use for food the kind of fish which has no scales’ and he (the Imam) disliked al-Mar Mahi (catfish).”’

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا تَأْكُلِ الْجِرِّيثَ وَ لَا الْمَارْمَاهِيَ وَ لَا طَافِياً وَ لَا طِحَالًا لِأَنَّهُ بَيْتُ الدَّمِ وَ مُضْغَةُ الشَّيْطَانِ .

    4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not use for food eel, al-Mar Mahi, the dead fish floating on water and the spleen because it is the home of blood and a morsel of Satan.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ حَنْظَلَةَ قَالَ حُمِلَتْ إِلَيَّ رَبِيثَا يَابِسَةٌ فِي صُرَّةٍ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْهَا فَقَالَ كُلْهَا فَلَهَا قِشْرٌ .

    5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim from ‘Umar ibn Hanzalah who has said the following: “Dried up rabitha (shrimp) was sent to me in a sack and I visited abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and asked him (the Imam) about it. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can use it for food; it has scales.’”

    6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ’Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib in al-Kufah would ride the mule of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, then pass by the fish market and say, ‘Do not use for food and do not sell of fish whatever has no scales.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَنَانِ بْنِ سَدِيرٍ قَالَ سَأَلَ الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ كَامِلٍ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ أَنَا حَاضِرٌ عَنِ الْجِرِّيِّ فَقَالَ وَجَدْنَا فِي كِتَابِ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) أَشْيَاءَ مُحَرَّمَةً مِنَ السَّمَكِ فَلَا تَقْرَبْهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ قِشْرٌ مِنَ السَّمَكِ فَلَا تَقْرَبَنَّهُ .

    7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hanan ibn Sadir who has said the following: “Al-‘Ala’ ibn Kamil asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when I was present, about eel. He (the Imam) said, ‘We have found in the book of Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, of fish certain varities are unlawful for food so do not go close to them.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘Of fish those which have no scales, do not go close to them.’”

    حَنَانُ بْنُ سَدِيرٍ قَالَ أَهْدَى الْفَيْضُ بْنُ الْمُخْتَارِ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) رَبِيثَا فَأَدْخَلَهَا إِلَيْهِ وَ أَنَا عِنْدَهُ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا وَ قَالَ هَذِهِ لَهَا قِشْرٌ فَأَكَلَ مِنْهُ وَ نَحْنُ نَرَاهُ .

    8. Hanan ibn Sadir has the following: “Once, al-Fayd ibn al-Mukhtar sent rabitha as gift to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. It was brought for him when I was present. He (the Imam) looked at it and said, ‘This has scales.’ He (the Imam) ate thereof and we saw him eating.”’

    9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated [from his father] from Harun ibn Muslim from Mas’adah ibn Sadaqah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ’Amir al-Mu’minin would ride the mule of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. He (the Imam) then would pass by the fish market and say, ‘You must not use for food and must not sell whatever does not have scales.’”

    أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَمِّهِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ صَاحِبُ الْحِيتَانِ قَالَ خَرَجْنَا بِسَمَكٍ نَتَلَقَّى بِهِ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) وَ قَدْ خَرَجْنَا مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ وَ قَدْ قَدِمَ هُوَ مِنْ سَفَرٍ لَهُ فَقَالَ وَيْحَكَ يَا فُلَانُ لَعَلَّ مَعَكَ سَمَكاً فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ يَا سَيِّدِي جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ انْزِلُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ لَعَلَّهُ زَهْوٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَأَرَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ ارْكَبُوا لَا حَاجَةَ لَنَا فِيهِ وَ الزَّهْوُ سَمَكٌ لَيْسَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ .

    10. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali from his uncle Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Ja‘far who has said the following: “Ishaq, fisherman, narrated to me the following, ‘Once we went out with fish to meet abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. We went out of al-Madinah and he (the Imam) was coming from his journey and he (the Imam) said, ‘Fie upon, you O so and so, perhaps you have fish with you.’ I replied, ‘Yes, O my master, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Bring them down.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Perhaps it is Zahw.’ I replied, ‘Yes, it is and I showed him (the Imam) Zahw ’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Ride your stumpers; we cannot use them for food.’ Al- Zahw is a fish that has no scales.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنِ الْعَمْرَكِيِّ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا يَحِلُّ أَكْلُ الْجِرِّيِّ وَ لَا السُّلَحْفَاةِ وَ لَا السَّرَطَانِ قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ اللَّحْمِ الَّذِي يَكُونُ فِي أَصْدَافِ الْبَحْرِ وَ الْفُرَاتِ أَ يُؤْكَلُ فَقَالَ ذَاكَ لَحْمُ الضَّفَادِعِ لَا يَحِلُّ أَكْلُهُ .

    11. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy from Ali ibn Ja‘far from his brother abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not lawful to use eel, turtle and crab for food.’ I then asked him (the Imam) about the shellfish of the ocean and al-Furat: if they could be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘That is the flesh of frogs and it is not lawful to use it for food.’”

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْهَمَذَانِيِّ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ عَنِ الْكَلْبِيِّ النَّسَّابَةِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْجِرِّيِّ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مَسَخَ طَائِفَةً مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ فَمَا أَخَذَ مِنْهُمُ الْبَحْرَ فَهُوَ الْجِرِّيُّ وَ الزِّمِّيرُ وَ الْمَارْمَاهِي وَ مَا سِوَى ذَلِكَ وَ مَا أَخَذَ مِنْهُمُ الْبَرَّ فَالْقِرَدَةُ وَ الْخَنَازِيرُ وَ الْوَبْرُ وَ الْوَرَلُ وَ مَا سِوَى ذَلِكَ .

    12. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ali al-Hamadaniy from Sama‘ah ibn Mehran from al-Kalbiy al-Nassabah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about eel. He (the Imam) said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, metamorphosed a group of banu Israelites, those of them who went to the sea are eels, al-Zimir and al-Mar Mahi and others, and those who remained on land are apes, pigs, wild cats and lizards and others.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ يُونُسَ قَالَ كَتَبْتُ إِلَى الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) السَّمَكُ لَا يَكُونُ لَهُ قِشْرٌ أَ يُؤْكَلُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ مِنَ السَّمَكِ مَا يَكُونُ لَهُ زَعَارَّةٌ فَيَحْتَكُّ بِكُلِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ فَتَذْهَبُ قُشُورُهُ وَ لَكِنْ إِذَا اخْتَلَفَ طَرَفَاهُ يَعْنِي ذَنَبَهُ وَ رَأْسَهُ فَكُلْهُ .

    13. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Salih al-Sindiy from Yunus who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and asked if fish which has no scales can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘Of fish there are those which have bad manners and they rub against everything and its scales go away, but if its two ends are different, its tail and head, then you can use it for food.’”
