The Book of Hunting

كتاب الصيد

“The Book of Hunting” is book 22 of Al-Kafi, the collection of ash-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Kulayni. It holds 119 hadiths — Hadith 10,927–10,976 in the standard numbering. Each is shown below in the original Arabic with an English translation, its full reference, and the grading the hadith scholars gave it where one was recorded. It is long enough that it is split across 3 pages so each one stays quick to load; the parts run in order and are linked at the foot of the page.

Do they not all agree with you that its kill is proper slaughtering?’ I replied, ‘Yes, it is true.’ He (the Imam) then asked, ‘What do they say about a sheep slaughtered by a man? Is his slaughtering proper?’ I replied, ‘Yes, he has done so.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If a beast comes and after his slaughtering eats something from the slaughtered sheep can the rest be used for food?’ I replied, ‘Yes, it can be used for food.’ He (the Imam) said that if they answer you in this way ask them this question. ‘How is it that even though what is slaughtered properly (the catch of the trained hunting dog) and the dog ate thereof, you do not use the rest for food, but you use for food the sheep slaughtered by a man and a beast eats thereof?”’
