3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from Yahya ibn al-Mubarak from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jabalah from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar and others who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that they say, ‘Olives stir up gas. He (the Imam) said, ‘Olives dispel gas.’”
4. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Mansur ibn al-‘Abbas from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Wasi’ from Ishaq ibn ’Isma‘il from Muhammad ibn Yazid from abu Dawud al-Nakha’iy who has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Use olives for rubbing and as sauce; it is the rubbing oil of the virtuous people and the sauce of the chosen ones. It was touched with holiness twice and it was blessed when coming and returning (plentiful or scarce) and with it illness does not harm.”’
5. Mansur ibn al-‘Abbas has narrated from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Zari‘ al-Basriy from a man who has said the following: “We mentioned olives before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and a man said it stirs up gas. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it dispels gas.’”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ الْجَرِيرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمُؤْمِنِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الزَّيْتُ دُهْنُ الْأَبْرَارِ وَ إِدَامُ الْأَخْيَارِ بُورِكَ فِيهِ مُقْبِلًا وَ بُورِكَ فِيهِ مُدْبِراً انْغَمَسَ بِالْقُدْسِ مَرَّتَيْنِ .
6. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Nawfaliy al-Jaririy from ‘Abd al-Mu’min al-Ansariy who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, has said, ‘Olives are the rubbing oil of the virtuous ones and the sauce of the selected ones. It was blessed when coming as well as returning (plentiful or scarce) and immersed in holiness twice.’”
7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja‘far in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Olives increase in water.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman from Muhammad ibn Sawqah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘People are not cured as good as with honey.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Licking honey is cure for all illnesses. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, “From its belly, drink of many colors come out. In it there is cure for people.” Honey with reading Quran and chewing frankincense dissolves phlegm.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يُعْجِبُهُ الْعَسَلُ .
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, liked honey a great deal.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ عَنْ سُكَيْنٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَأْكُلُ الْعَسَلَ وَ يَقُولُ آيَاتٌ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ وَ مَضْغُ اللُّبَانِ يُذِيبُ الْبَلْغَمَ .
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja‘far from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ibrahim from ‘Abd Allah al-Hamid from Sukayn who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would (say) eating honey, reciting verses of Quran and chewing frankincense dissolve phlegm.’”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Hassan from Musa ibn Bakr who has said the following: “A patient does not receive a cure as he can with honey.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Hassan from Musa ibn Bakr who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal would eat sugar very often when going to sleep.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd al-’Aziz al-‘Abdiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If cheese is harmful in all things and does not benefit in anything, sugar on the other hand benefits in all things and does not harm in anything.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Azdiy from certain persons of our people in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “Once, a man complained before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘I am a complaining man.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘What he needs is al-Mubarak.’ I then asked, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what is al-Mubarak?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is sugar.’ I then asked, ‘What kind of sugar.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is your Sulaymaniy, this one.’”
أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ عَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) أَوْ قَالَ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ السُّكَّرُ الطَّبَرْزَدُ يَأْكُلُ الْبَلْغَمَ أَكْلًا .
4. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn Sahl from al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, or certain persons of our people from al-Rida’ who has said the following: “Al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, the sugar which is chipped with a hammer eats away (abolishes) phlegm entirely.’”
5. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn al-Nu’man from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “I once complained before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, against pain and he (the Imam) said, ‘When you lie down in your bed eat two pieces of sugar.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I followed the instruction and I became well. I told a physician about it, which was the best in our town. He asked me, ‘How has abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, learned about it? It is of our secret knowledge. However he owns books, so he may have found it in his books.’”
6. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from Sa‘dan ibn Muslim from Mu‘attib who has said the following: “After abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, took his dinner, he said, ‘When you go in the storage look for two pieces of sugar for me.’ I said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, there is nothing there.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Go there, fie upon you.’ He has said, ‘I went there and found two pieces of sugar and brought them to him (the Imam).”’
7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “Once, a man complained before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about plague. He (the Imam) said, ‘What you need is the fine and blessed.’ I then asked, ‘What is the fine and blessed?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is your Sulaymaniy, this one.’ He (the narrator) has said that abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, then said, ‘The first one who found sugar was Sulayman ibn Dawud, ‘Alayhim al-Salam . ’”
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Musa ibn al-Hassan from ‘Ubayd al-Khayyat from ‘Abd ‘Abd al-’Aziz from ibn Sinan from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If a man has one thousand dirham and he does not have anything else with him but he buys sugar with it, he is not considered a spendthrift.””
9. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from a number of his people from Ali ibn Asbat from Yahya ibn Bashir al-Nabbal who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to my father, ‘O Bashir, with what do you treat your people for illnesses?’ he replied, ‘It is those bitter medicines.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘When any of you becomes ill take white sugar, make it into powder, pour cold water on it and make him drink it. The One who has made cure in bitter things has the power to make it in the sweet things also.’”
10. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Yasar who has said the following: “Al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The sugar chipped with a small hammer dissolves phlegm entirely.’”
11. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn Ahmad ibn ‘Ushaym from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “Someone in our family had a fever and physicians had prescribed al-ghafith (a certain herb) and we made the patient to drink it, but it did not benefit him I then complained against it before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and he (the Imam) said, ‘Allah has not placed cure in anything which is bitter (only). Take one or one and a half piece of sugar in a bowl and pour water on it. Rub it with your hand and make the patient drink it. In the second night make it two and a half pieces of sugar, dissolve it and make the patient to drink. In the third night make it three and a half pieces and dissolve it as before.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I followed the instruction and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, granted cure to our patient.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) سُمُونُ الْبَقَرِ شِفَاءٌ .
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘In ghee from cows there is a cure. 5 ”
عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) السَّمْنُ دَوَاءٌ وَ هُوَ فِي الصَّيْفِ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ فِي الشِّتَاءِ وَ مَا دَخَلَ جَوْفاً مِثْلُهُ .
2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘In ghee there is a cure. It is better in summer than it is in winter and no other thing like it enters inside (the stomach).’”
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from al-Muttalib ibn Ziyad who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Ghee is a very fine sauce.’”
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When a man becomes fifty years old he must not go to sleep with an amount of ghee in his stomach.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and an old man from Iraq spoke to him (the Imam) who asked the man, ‘Why has your voice changed?’ The man replied, ‘It is because my front teeth have gone, so there is defect in my speaking.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said to him, ‘Certain ones of my teeth have also gone. Satan presents the temptation that what will happen if your other teeth go, how will then you eat? I say that there is no means and no power without Allah.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘You must eat Tharid (bread made in pieces in broth), it is suitable, and stay away from ghee because it is not suitable for an old man.’”
6. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from those whom he has mentioned from abu Hafs al-Abbar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Nothing entering inside is (as good) as ghee but I dislike it for an old man.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from al-Rabi’ ibn Muhammad al-Musliy from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘Whenever the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, ate food or drank a drink, he said, “O Lord, grant us blessing in it and better to replace it.” However when drinking milk he (the Messenger of Allah) would say, ‘O Lord, grant us blessing in it and increase it for us.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Salmah ibn al-Khattab from ‘Abbad ibn Ya’qub from ‘Ubayd ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Qays who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The milk of black sheep is better than that of the red ones; and the milk of red cows is better than that of the black ones.”’
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِذَا شَرِبَ اللَّبَنَ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَ زِدْنَا مِنْهُ .
3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when drinking milk would say, ‘O Lord, make it a blessing for us and increase it for us.’”
4. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from al-Sayyariy from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn abu ‘Abd Allah al-Farsiy from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Once, a man said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I eat milk products and they harm me.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said to him, ‘No, by Allah, milk never harms; but you may have eaten something else with it which has harmed you, but you thought it is milk.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يَغَصُّ بِشُرْبِ اللَّبَنِ لِأَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ لَبَناً خالِصاً سائِغاً لِلشَّارِبِينَ .
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘There is no one who is choked when drinking milk; Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, ‘ . . .pure milk which is suitable for those who drink.’”*
6. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Khalid ibn Najih who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Milk is the food of the Messenger (of Allah).”’
7. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar and others have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad al-Jawhariy from abu al-Hassan al-Asbahaniy who has said the following: “I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and a man said to him (the Imam), when I was hearing, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I feel weakness in my body.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You must drink milk, it grows flesh and strengthens the bones.’”
8. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Nuh ibn Shu’ayb from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’For one on whom water of the back (sexual desire) has changed milk and honey are beneficial.”’
9. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Hashim from Muhammad ibn Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who has said the following: “We ate with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. There was meat of camel (or sheep) and I thought it was from his house. We ate, and then bowls of milk were brought. He (the Imam) drank from it and said to me, ‘O abu Muhammad drink.’ I tasted it and asked, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, is it milk?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is al- Fitrah (nature, seed).’ Then dates were brought and we ate.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) أَلْبَانُ الْبَقَرِ دَوَاءٌ .
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’Milk products from cows are medicine.”’
2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid, from Yahya ibn Ibrahim ibn abu al-Balad, from his father from his grandfather who has said the following: “I once complained before abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about stomach trouble and he (the Imam) said, ‘What prevents you from drinking cow milk, have you ever drank it before?’ I replied, ‘Yes, many times.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘How did you find it?’ I replied, ‘It tans the stomach, covers the kidneys with fat and increases one’s appetite for food.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Had it been the right time, you and I could have gone to Yanba’ so we could drink milk.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Aban ‘Uthman from Zurarah who has said the following: “One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You must drink cow milk; it mixes with every tree.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya in a marfu‘ manner has narrated the following: “Once abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘If one wants to eat yogurt without harming him, he should pour al-Hadum on it.’ I then asked, ‘What is al-Hadum ?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is al- Nankhoxvah.’”
محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن بكر بن صالح، عن الجعفري قال: سمعت أبا الحسن موسى عليه السلام يقول: أبوال الابل خير من ألبانها، ويجعل الله عزوجل الشفاء في ألبانها.
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Bakr ibn Salih from al-Ja‘fariy who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, Musa, ‘Alayhi al Salam, saying, ‘Urine of camels is better than their milk, and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has placed cure in their milk products.”’
عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن أبي عبدالله، عن نوح بن شعيب، عن بعض أصحابنا، عن موسى بن عبدالله بن الحسين قال: سمعت أشياخنا يقولون: ألبان اللقاح شفاء من كل داء وعاهة، ولصاحب البطن أبوالها.
2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Nuh ibn Shu’ayb from certain persons of our people from Musa ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Hassan who has said the following: “I have heard my shaykh’s saying, ‘The milk of camels is a cure for all kinds of illness and defects, and for one’s stomach trouble it is their urine.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu ibn abu Najran from Safwan ibn Yahya from al-‘Is ibn al-Qasim who has said the following: “I once had lunch with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and he (the Imam) said to me, ‘Do you know what this is?’ I replied, ‘No, I do not know. 5 He (the Imam) said, ‘This is Shiraz al-’Utun (yogurt- water) that we have extracted for one of our patients. If you like to eat you can eat it.’”
2. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn Khalid from Khalaf ibn Hammad from Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that small bowls were brought and he (the Imam) pointed with his hand toward one of them saying, ‘This is Shiraz al-’Utun which we have extracted for a patient with us. Whoever wants to eat he can eat and whoever does not want can leave it.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Safwan ibn Yahya from ‘Is ibn al-Qasim who has said the following ‘I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about drinking yogurt water. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can drink it.’”
4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from al-Husayn ibn al-Mubarak from abu Maryam al-Ansariy who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about drinking yogurt water. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about cheese. He (the Imam) said, ’You have asked me about a food that is attractive to me. 5 He (the Imam) then gave a dirham to the boy and asked him to bring cheese. He (the Imam) asked for lunch which was brought. He (the Imam) ate and we ate with him (the Imam). When we finished lunch I asked, ‘What do you say about cheese? 5 He (the Imam) asked me, ‘Did you not see me eating it with you? 5 I replied, ‘Yes, I saw you but I like to hear it from you. 5 He (the Imam) said, ‘I will tell you about cheese and other things. Whatever has lawful in it as well as unlawful is lawful for you, until you learn that it particularly is unlawful, then you must leave it.’”
2. Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Kufiy has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Nahdiy from Muhammad ibn al-Walid from Aban ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman who has said the following: “About cheese abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Everything is lawful for you until two witnesses testify before you that it is dead animal.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn Ibrahim al-Hashimiy, from his father from Muhammad ibn al- Fadl al-Naysaburiy from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “A man once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about cheese. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is an illness for which there is no cure.’ When it was al-‘Isha’ (evening) the man came to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and looked at cheese on the table-spread and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause. At lunchtime, I asked you about cheese. You said to me that it is an illness for which there is no cure and now I see it on the table-spread.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is harmful at lunch and useful in dinner and it increases the water of one’s back.’ It is narrated that harmfulness of cheese is in its crust.”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’Eating walnut in hot weather stirs heat inside and blisters on the body; but eating it in winter warms up the kidneys and repels cold.’”
