5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from his brother al-FIassan from Zur’ah from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a man who comes across a deceased without Wudu’ and about what he should do. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can thump his palms against the wall of bricks to have Tayammum.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Faddal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from woman of al-Hassan al-Sayqal from al-Hassan al-Sayqal who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about women’s performing Salah (prayer) for deceased people if there is no man present among them. He (the Imam) said, ‘They all line up and no one of them stands up in front of others.’”
2. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn abu Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shimr from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If no man is present, a woman leads (standing) in the middle with other women on her right and left, she in the middle says Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) until Salah (prayer) is complete.’”
3. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad al-Kindiy from al-Mithamiy from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn abu ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a woman experiencing Hayd (menses), if she can perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, but she must not stand in the line; instead stand alone.’”
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a woman who experiences Hayd (menses) if she can perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, but she must not stand in the line of the others.’”
5. Hammad has narrated from Hariz from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Woman experiencing Hayd (menses) can also perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased; there is no Ruku‘, and Sajdah. One experiencing sexual relation can take Tayammum and performs Salah (prayer) for a deceased.’”
1. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah from more than one person from Aban from Muhammad ibn Musfim who has said the foiiowing: “I once asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ’Is there any hour during which performing Salah (prayer) for a deceased is prohibited? He (the Imam) said, ‘No, there is no such time.’”
2. Abu Afi af-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd af-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Musfim who has said the foiiowing: “Abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You can perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased anytime; it is not a Salah (prayer) with Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees) and Sujud (prostrations). Only on sunset and sunrise performing Salah (prayer) in which there is humbleness, Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees) and Sujud (prostrations) it is not desirable, because it sets and rises between the two Qarn (horns) of Satan.’” (Another meaning of the word ‘Qarn’ is a century)
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from in a mafu’ manner the following: “I asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ’Why are there five Takbir in Salah (prayer) for a dead person?’ He (the Imam) replied, ’From every Salah (prayer) of a day’s Salah (prayer), one Takbir has come.’”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman and Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah would say five Takbir for certain people, and four Takbir for other groups of people. When he (the Messenger of Allah) would say four Takbir in the Salah (prayer) for a dead man, he (the deceased) was suspected of hypocrisy.”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Muhammad ibn Muhajir from his mother “Umm Salamah who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, say, ‘When performing Salah (prayer) for a deceased, the Messenger of Allah would say Takbir (Allah is great beyond description), then say the two testimonies (I testify that only Allah deserves worship, He is one and has no partners and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger). He would then say Takbir then say, “ O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause” and pray for the prophets. Then say Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) and pray for the believing people, then say the fourth Takbir and pray for the deceased, then say Takbir and end the Salah (prayer). When Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, prohibited praying for the hypocrites, he (the Messenger of Allah) would say Takbir, say the two testimonies, pray for the prophets, then say Takbir and pray for the believing people then say the fourth Takbir, end the Salah (prayer) and would not pray for the deceased.’”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from certain persons of his people from Sulayman ibn Ja‘far al- Ja‘fariy from his father who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Allah, most Blessed, most High, made five Salah (prayer) obligatory, and from every Salah (prayer) there is one Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) in Salah (prayer) for a deceased.’”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Abd al-Malik al- Hadramiy from abu Bakr al-Hadramiy who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once asked, ‘O abu Bakr, do you know how much is Salah (prayer) for a deceased?’ I replied, ‘No, I do not know.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is five Takbir (Allah is great beyond description). Do you know from where are they taken?’ I replied, ‘No, I do not know.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Five Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) are taken from five Salah (prayer), one Takbir from every Salah (prayer).”’
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Musa ibn Talhah from abu Bakr ibn ‘Isa ibn Ahmad al-‘ Alaviy who has said the following: “Once I was in the Masjid when a dead body was brought in and I wanted to perform Salah (prayer) for the deceased. Abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, came to me, placed his elbow against my chest and pushed me back all the way out of the Masjid and then said, ‘O abu Bakr, Salah (prayer) for deceased people is not performed in Masjid.”’
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ’Uramah from Zur‘ah, from Muhammad ibn Sanaa ‘ah in a Muzmar manner has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about Salah (prayer) for a deceased. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must say five Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) in this Salah (prayer). After first Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) say, “I testify that only Allah deserves worship, He is one and has no partners and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause and to ’A’immah who provide right guidance and forgive us, our brothers who were believers before us and do not allow jealousy against the believers to enter our hearts. O Lord, You are compassionate and merciful. O Lord grant forgiveness to our living people, to those who have died of the male, female believing people, place kindness in our hearts, those of the virtuous ones among us and grant us guidance in the disputed matters of the issues of truth by Your permission; You guide, whomever You will, to the right path.” If the second Takbir is said (before you complete the above sayings), it is not harmful.You then say, “O Lord, this is Your servant, son of Your male and female servants. You know better than I about him do. He needs to receive mercy from You and You do not need him. O Lord forgive his sins, increase his good deeds, forgive him, have mercy upon him, lightup his grave, dictate to him his good argument, join him with his Holy prophet, do not deprive us of receiving rewards because of him and do not put us to trials after him.” Say this until you complete all five Takbir.’” (According to this Hadith there are five Takbir and after every Takbir there are the above recitations, which consist of the two testimonies, Salawat (O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause), prayer for the believers and prayer for the deceased).

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘In Salah (prayer) for a deceased say Takbir (Allah is great beyond description), then say, “O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause,” then say, “O Lord, this is Your servant the son of Your male and a female servant. I do not know about him except good but You know more about him than I know. O Lord if he is a person of good deeds, increase his good deeds, but if he is a person of bad deeds, forgive his sins, grant him mercy, make his grave spacious and make him of the friends of Muhammad, O Allah grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause.” Then say the second Takbir (Allah is great beyond description). Then say, “O Lord, if he is a person of purity, purify him but if he is a sinner forgive him.” Then say the third Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) and say, “O Lord, do not deprive us of receiving rewards because of him and do not put us to trial after him.” Then say the fourth Takbir (Allah is great beyond description). Then say, “O Lord, write him (his name) with You among those of high status and replace him in his children whom he has left behind and make him of the friends of Muhammad, O Allah grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause.” Then say the fifth Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) and end the Salah (prayer).’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from a number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad all from ibn Mahbub from abu Wallad who has said the following: “I once asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about Takbir over a deceased person. He (the Imam) said, ‘There are five Takbir. In the first one say, “I testify that only Allah deserves worship, He is one and has no partners and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah, I pray to You to grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause.” Then say, “O Lord, this person, shrouded in front of us, is your servant and the son of Your servant whose soul You have taken to Yourself, and he is in need for your mercy and You do not need his being punished. O Lord, if he is a person of good deeds, increase his good deeds; if he is a person of bad deeds, forgive his sins.” Then say the second Takbir and do the same after every Takbir.”
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘In Salah (prayer) for a deceased say Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) and the testimony and say, “We are from Allah and to Allah we return. All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds, Lord of death and life. O Allah, I pray to You to grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. O Allah I pray to You to grant Muhammad the best of rewards for his favors to his followers and for his preaching the message of his Lord.” Then say, “O Lord, this is Your servant, the son of Your male and a female servant. His forehead is in Your control. He has left this world, he is in need of Your mercy, and You do not need his being punished. O Lord, we do not know about him anything except good; but You know more about him than we know. O Lord, if he is a person of good deeds, increase his good deeds. If he is a person of bad deeds, forgive his sins, grant him mercy, forgive him through your mercy, join him with your Holy prophet, and keep him on the unchangeable word in the worldly life and in the hereafter. O Lord, make us to walk on the path of guidance and guide him and us to the right path. O Lord, grant (us) forgiveness, O Lord grant (us) forgiveness.” Then say the second Takbir. Repeat what you have said after every Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) until you say all five Takbir (Allah is great beyond description).’”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus who has said the following: “I once asked al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause. People raise their hands during the first Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) in Salah (prayer) for a deceased but not in the rest of Takbir and if should I raise my hand in the first Takbir only or in all Takbir. He (the Imam) said, ‘Raise your hand in all Takbir.’”

Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hassan from Ahmad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahim abu al-Sakhr from ’Isma‘il ibn ‘Abd al- Khaliq ibn ‘Abd Rabbihi who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘In Salah (prayer) for a deceased say, ‘O Lord, You have created this soul and You have caused it to die. You know all of its secret and public matters. We have come to You to mediate before You in his favor, so accept our intercession. O Lord, entrust it with those whom it took as supreme power and raise it with those whom it loved.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ibn ’Udhaynah from Muhammad ibn Muslim and Zurarah from and Mu’ammar ibn Yahya and ’Isma‘il al-Ju’fiy who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘There is no particularly prescribed prayer to say in Salah (prayer) for a deceased. You can pray whatever prayer you like; and the most deserving is the believing person who has just died and that such prayer begins with prayer for the Messenger of Allah by saying, ‘O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause.’”
2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from ’Abd Allah ibn Muskan from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘There is no Salam (the phrase of offering greeting of peace) to end Salah (prayer) for a deceased.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman from al-Halabiy from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, have said, ‘There is no Salam (the phrase of offering greeting of peace) to end Salah (prayer) for a deceased.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from al-Muthanna’ ibn al-Walid from Zurarah from who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The Messenger of Allah said seventy Salah (prayers) for Hamzah.’”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Um ay r from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in Salah (prayer) for Sahl ibn Hunayf who was a Badriy, (participant in the battle of Badr) said five Takbir. He (the Imam then walked for a while, then placed him on the ground and said another five Takbir and so on until he had said twenty- five Takbir.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir from who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The Messenger of Allah in Salah (prayer) for Hamzah said seventy Takbir and ’Amir al-Mu’minin) Ali said twenty five Takbir in Salah (prayer) for Sahl ibn Hunayf. He (the Imam) said, ‘Each time ’Amir al-Mu’minin said five Takbir as new people arrived saying that we did not have a chance to attend Salah (prayer) for him so ’Amir al-Mu’minin would ask to place him on the ground and he (the Imam) say five Takbir until he arrived to his grave.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “One of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has stated this Hadith: ‘There are people of weak understanding who do not understand prayer for the Holy prophet, and for the believing people - male and female. In Salah (prayer) for such people you should say, “Our Lord, forgive those who repent and follow your path and save them from the fire of hell. . .” Read to the end of verse 8 of Surah 40 of the Holy Quran.’”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ‘Umar ibn ’Udhaynah from Fudayl ibn Yasar who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When you perform Salah (prayer) for a believing person, pray for him and strive in your appeal in favor of the deceased person. If he is of those who keep matters on hold (of waqifiy belief) or of weak understanding say, ‘Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) and, O Lord, forgive those who have repented, followed your path and protect them against the suffering of the hell fire.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If the deceased is a person of weak understanding, say, “O Lord, forgive those who have repented and followed Your path and protect them against suffering of the hell fire.” If you do not know the condition of the deceased, then say, “O Lord, if this deceased is of those who love good and people of goodness, then forgive him, have mercy on him and ignore his shortcomings.” If the deceased is a person of weak understanding, ask forgiveness for him in the form of intercession, not because of his right upon you as believing in Divine Authority of ’A’immah, Alayhim al-Salam.”’
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn Faddal from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Expressing kindness and compassion has two aspects: The aspect of al-Walayah (guardianship) and that of intercession.’”
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from a man from Sulayman ibn Khalid who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said to say this, ‘(I testify that only Allah deserves worship, He is one and has no partners and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger). O Allah, I pray to You to grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. O Lord, accept his intercession, brighten his face and increase the number of his followers. O Lord, forgive me, grant me mercy and accept my repentance. O Lord, forgive those who repent, follow your path and save them from the fire of hell. . . .’ (40:7) If the deceased is a believing person, he goes to paradise; if he is not a believer, he goes out of it.’”
6. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ghalib from Thabit abu al-Miqdam who has said the following: “Once I was with abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when a deceased from the people who believe in predestination was brought; and I was near him (the Imam) and heard him (the Imam) say, ‘O Lord, it is You who have created these souls and You cause them to die and give them life. You know their secrets and their public affairs better than we know. You know the permanent and temporary ones among them. O Lord, this is Your servant. I do not know anything evil about him and You know better about him. We have come to intercede in his favor after his death. If he deserves, accept our intercession in his favor and raise him with those whom he loves.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from af-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ubay ibn Salul died, the Holy prophet attended his funeral. ‘Umar said to the Messenger of Allah, “O Messenger of Allah, has Allah not forbidden you from standing on his grave?” He (the Messenger of Allah) remained silent. He (‘Umar) said, “O Messenger of Allah, has Allah not forbidden you from standing on his grave?” He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Fie upon you, how you could tell what I say? I said, “O Lord, fill his belly with fire, fill his grave with fire and make him feel the heat of fire.”’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘He made the Messenger of Allah to expose what he disliked.’”
2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father all from ibn Mahbub from Ziyad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Amir ibn al-Simt who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that a man of the hypocrites died. Al-Husayn ibn Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, attended his funeral; at this time one of his followers met him and asked, ‘O so and so, where do you want to go?’ He (the follower) said, ‘I am running away from the dead body of this hypocrite and from having to perform Salah (prayer) for him.’ Al-Husayn ibn Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Just stay on my right side and say what I say.’ When the guardian of the deceased said Takbir, al-Husayn ibn Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘O Lord, condemn so and so a thousand times together and without difference. O Lord, make this one of Your servant to suffer in Your land and make him suffer the heat of fire, make him suffer the most severe of Your punishment; he loved Your enemies, he was hostile to Your friends and he hated the family of Your Holy prophet.’”
3. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from ibn abu Najran from Safwan al-Jammal who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that a man of the hypocrites died and al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, came out walking. One of his followers came and he (the Imam) asked, ‘Where are you going?’ He replied, ‘I am running away from the dead body of this hypocrite to avoid performing Salah (prayer) for him.’ Al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Stand next to me and say what you will hear I will say.’ He (the Imam) then raised his hands and said, ‘O Lord, humiliate a servant who is one of Your servants in Your land. O Lord, make him feel the heat of Your fire. O Lord, make him suffer the most severe of suffering from Your creation because he loved Your enemies, he was an enemy of Your friends and hated the family of Your Holy prophet.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When you pray against the enemy of Allah say, “O Lord, we do not know of so and so except that he is Your enemy and the enemy of Your messenger. O Lord, fill up his grave with fire as well as his belly and hasten him to the fire, because he loved Your enemies, he was an enemy of Your friends and hated the family of Your Holy prophet. O Lord, constrict down his grave.’ When his body is picked up, then say, ‘O Lord, do not raise him and do not purify him.’”
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ’Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ’If the dead person is one who refuses the truth say, ‘O Lord, fill up his belly with fire as well as his grave. Make snakes and scorpions dominate him.’ This is what abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said about an evil woman of banu ‘Umayyah against whom my father prayed and said this expression, “Make Satan her companion.” Muhammad ibn Muslim has said that he then asked him (the Imam), ’For what reason snakes and scorpions are placed in her grave?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is because snakes bite her and scorpions sting her and Satans give her company.’ I then asked, ‘Will she feel the pain?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, very severely.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, say, ‘O Lord, humiliate a servant who is one of Your servants in Your land. O Lord, make him feel the heat of Your fire. O Lord, make him suffer the most severe of suffering from Your creation because, he was an enemy of Your friends, he loved Your enemies and hated the family of Your Holy prophet.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Abd Allah al-Hajjal from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman from abu‘ Abd Allah or from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Once a woman of banu ‘Umayyah died and I was present in her funeral. When they performed Salah (prayer) and picked her body when on the hands of men he (the Imam) said, ‘O Lord, put her down and do not raise her and do not cleanse her.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘She was an enemy of Allah -I think he said- and our (enemy).”’

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy from Ali ibn Ja‘far from his brother Musa ibn Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a people who just have said Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) for Salah (prayer) of a deceased that another dead body is placed on the ground. What are they to do? He (the Imam) said, ’They can leave the first one until they complete all Takbir for the second one. They can complete all Takbir for the first one and do the remaining for the last one, either way is not harmful? ”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Muhammad ibn ‘Ajlan who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must not make it heavy for your deceased by placing him in the grave. Place him two or three yards away from the grave on the ground so that he can get ready.”’

Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Khurasaniy from his father from Yunus who has said the following: “I heard a Hadith from abu al-Hassan, Musa, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that whenever I remember it in a house I feel as if it is tightening upon me. He (the Imam) said, ‘When a deceased is placed in front of his grave, give him a chance for a while; he readies himself for interrogation.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Nadr ibn al-Suwayd from Yahya ibn ‘Imran al-Halabiy from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muskan from Zurarah who has said the following: “Once I was with of abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when a man from Ansar was also there. A funeral procession passed by and the Ansariy man stood up; but abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, did not do so, and I remained sitting with him. The Ansariy remained standing until the procession passed by and then he sat down. The Imam asked, ’What made you stand up?’ He replied, ‘I saw al-Husayn ibn Ali do as I did.’ Abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ’By Allah, al-Husayn did not do so and no one from us (Ahl al-Bayt) has ever done so.’ The Ansariy then said, ‘What you just said has placed me in doubt. I thought I had seen him (al-Husayn) doing so.’”
2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ibn abu Najran from Muthanna al-Hannat who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that Ali ibn Al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was sitting when (people with) the dead body passed by. People stood up when the dead body appeared. Ali ibn Al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Once, (people with) the dead body of a Jewish person passed by; the Messenger of Allah was sitting on (the side of) way. He did not like the dead body of Jewish person higher over his head and to avoid this he stood up.”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-‘Abdiy from ibn abu Ya‘fur who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that no one should enter a grave with shoes, slippers, turbans, gowns or hats.”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Um ay r from Ali ibn Yaqtin who has said the following: “I heard abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, say, ‘You must not enter a grave wearing a turban, a hat, shoes, or a shawl. You should open up your buttons, thus is the tradition of the Messenger of Allah. You should ask protection from Allah against Satan, the one condemned to be stoned. You should read Fatihah al-Kitab, Chapters 113, 114, 112 and Ayat al-Kursiy. If possible, one should make the side of his face touch the earth, keep saying the testimonies of faith and speak of Allah as much as one knows until he is in the presence of his guardian (Imam al-Mahdi).”’

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Misma’i from Isma’il ibn Yasar al-Wasitiy from Sayf ibn ‘Amirah from abu Bakr al-Hadramiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that you must not enter a grave wearing a turban, a shawl, a gown, or shoes. You should open your buttons.’ I then asked, ‘Can one wear al-Khuff (slippers or socks)?’ He replied, ‘There is no offense in wearing al-Khuff if needed or because of fear.’”
4. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that whoever enters a grave should come out only from the side where the feet are placed.”
5. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad in a marfu‘ manner the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘One may enter a grave from whatever direction he likes, but should come out from the side where the feet are placed.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Salih af-Sindiy from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from ’Abd Allah ibn Rashid who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that a man may enter the grave of his father, but a father should not enter the grave of his sons.”
