Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Bakr ibn Salih from Zakariya abu Yahya who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, asked about al-Fuqa ’ and described it for him (the Imam) how it is made. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not drink it and do not come back to me about it again.’”
13. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amir ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from Mu‘awiyah ibn Musa who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about al-Fuqa’. He (the Imam) said to me, ‘It is wine.’”
14. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Musa from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘All intoxicating substances are unlawful, everything confusing the power of reason is unlawful and al-Fuqa’ (beer) is unlawful.’”
15. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu al-Hassan and asked about al-Fuqa’. He (the Imam) said in writing, ‘It is wine and the penalty for drinking it is like that for drinking wine.’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hassan or a man from Ali ibn Faddal from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from ‘Ammar ibn Musa al-Sabatiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once explained for me how to cook raisins until the brew becomes lawful. He (the Imam) said, ‘Take one quarter of raisins and clean them. Pour twelve ritl of water on them, then soak for one night. If it is summer and you are afraid of its simmering, keep it in an oven, which is full a little so it does not simmer, then remove all the water from it. In the morning, pour water on it so that it is covered with water. Thereafter, boil it until its sweetness is gone. Thereafter, remove the other water and pour on it the first water. Thereafter, measure all of it and see how much the water is. Thereafter, measure one-third of it and pour it in the pot in which you want to cook it. Pour enough water to cover it, then measure it with a stick and keep its size and measurement by a stick or reed and mark it at the surface of the water. Thereafter, boil the other third until the remaining water goes, then boil it on fire and keep boiling until two-thirds are gone and only one-third is left. Thereafter, for every quarter take one ritl of honey and boil it until its scum and suds and blur of honey is gone from the cooking. Thereafter, beat it with a stick or such thing firmly until it is mixed and if you like, you can mix fragrance with saffron or ginger, you can do so, then you can drink it. If you like it to remain with you for a longer time then clean it properly.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from ‘Ammar al-Sabatiy who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about raisins and how to cook them to become clean for drinking. He (the Imam) said, ‘Take one quarter of raisins and clean it. Thereafter pour twelve ritl of water on it, then leave it for the night to soak. In the morning remove its suds, then pour on it enough water so it is covered thereby. Thereafter, boil it on fire for a boil then remove the water, then pour it on the first water, then place all of it in one pot. Then, ignite fire beneath it until two- thirds are evaporated and only one-third has remained with the fire underneath. Then take one ritl of honey and boil it on fire for a boil, remove its blur, pour it on the cooked (preparation), beat it until it is mixed, then pour saffron or a little ginger for fragrance. “You can also divide it in three parts to cook. First, you should measure it by a certain measurement so you know how much it is. Then place the first one in a pot in which you want to boil it. Then pour in it one-third as much as water reaches and mark its level, then pour the other third part, then mark it where water reaches then pour the last third part, then mark it where this other reaches; then fire underneath gently until its two-thirds are gone and only one-third is left.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Musa ibn al-Hassan from al-Sayyariy from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from those who narrated to him from ’Isma‘il ibn al-Fadl al-Hashimy who has said the following: “I once complained before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about growling in my stomach and my not being able to digest food. He (the Imam) said, ‘Why do you not drink al-Nabidh which we drink? It digests food and takes away abdominal growling and gases.’ I then asked, ‘Please describe it for me, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Take one Sa‘ of raisins, clean it of seeds and other things in it, then wash it properly, then soak it with an equal amount of water or a quantity that covers it. In winter leave it for three days and nights, and in summer one day and night. Thereafter clean it and take the cleaned amount, place it in a pot and take its measurement with a piece of wood then cook it gently until its two-thirds are gone and one-third is left. Then place in it one-half ritl of honey. Take this honey and cook it until the extra is gone then take ginger, Khulinjana (a certain Indian plant) and cinnamon, saffron, dianthus and Mustakiy (Mastic tree) powder them and place them in a piece of fine cloth. Place it in to cook and boil it with the rest, then take it away from the fire. When it is cool clean it. You can take from it after your lunch and dinner.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I followed the instruction and my condition that I had was gone. It is a fine drink and does not change if it remains for a time, by the will of Allah.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja‘far from al-Sayyariy from those whom he has mentioned from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once complained before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a certain pain and that a physician has prescribed for me a drink from raisins with water twice as much, and that honey must be poured on it and cooked until two-thirds are gone and only one-third is left.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Is it not sweet?’ I replied, ‘Yes, it is sweet.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can drink it.’ I did not tell him how much the amount of honey was.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Mansur ibn al-‘Abbas from Ja‘far ibn Ahmad al-Makfuf who has said the following: “I once wrote to him, meaning, abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, and asked about oxymel, rose water, jam of mulberry, apple, quince and pomegranate. He (the Imam) said in writing, ’It is lawful. 5 ”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Hamdan ibn Sulayman from Ali ibn al-Hassan from Ja‘far ibn Ahmad al-Makfuf who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and asked about drinks like oxymel, rose- water, jam of mulberry, pomegranate, quince and apple; if the seller is not knowledgeable when they are sold in our market places. He (the Imam) wrote, ‘It is permissible and it is not harmful. 5 ”
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ibrahim ibn Mahziyar from Khalilan ibn Hisham who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, in our area there is a drink called al-Myabeh which is taken from quince which is peeled then is placed in water. Juice (grape juice) then is boiled until one-third (is left), then the quince is crushed. Its juice then is taken. Then the one-third water and quince, musk, spices and condiment, saffron and honey are cooked until its two-thirds are evaporated and only one-third is left; if it is lawful to drink it. He (the Imam) wrote, ‘It is not unlawful as long as it is not changed. 5 ”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from ‘Ammar ibn Musa who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a large jug in which there is wine; if it is suitable for vinegar, or water, sauce or olives. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is washed then it is not unlawful.’ I asked about a pitcher in which there is wine; if it is suitable to use it for keeping water. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is washed then it is not harmful.’ (I asked) about a cup or bowl, which is used to drink wine, he (the Imam) said, ‘You must wash it three times.’ It was asked if just pouring water in it is sufficient. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not sufficient until he rubs it with his hand and washes it three times.’”
2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from al-Hajj al from Tha’labah from Hafs ibn al-A‘war who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a large jug in which there is wine, then it dries up if vinegar can be kept in it. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, one can do so.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ibn Bukayr from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about wine to which something is done until it is turned sour. He (the Imam) said, ’If what is done in it (the wine) overwhelms it, then is not harmful/”
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Jamil ibn Darraj and ibn Bukayr from Zurarah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about al- ‘Atiqah (old) wine which is turned into vinegar. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Fadalah ibn Ayyub from ibn Bukayr from ‘Ubayd ibn Zurarah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who takes wine and turns it into vinegar. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Fadalah ibn Ayyub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about wine which is turned into vinegar. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful if one has not placed in it what overwhelms it.’”

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from certain persons of our people from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin from Bakr ibn Muhammad from ‘Aythamah who has said the following: “I once visited abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when his women were with him and he (the Imam) sensed a smell and asked what it was. They said, ‘It is a kind of perfume which is placed in one’s hairs.’ He (the narrator) has said, that he (the Imam) commanded to throw it in the sewage.’”
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from ‘Ammar ibn Musa who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about the table on which wine or intoxicating substances is served. He (the Imam) said, ‘The table becomes unlawful.’ It then was asked, ‘If one is on a table from which he eats and there is a man who has wine with him and no one has drunk from it. He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not become unlawful until wine is drunk on it. If after drinking wine on the table, then sweet is served, one can eat it because it is another table, that is, one can eat the sweet.’”
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from Ahmad ibn ’Isma‘il al-Katib from his father who has said the following: “Once abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, went to Masjid al-Haram (the Sacred area). A group of Quraysh saw him. They asked, ‘Who is he?’ It was said to them, ‘He is the Imam of the people of Iraq.’ Certain ones among them said, ‘You may send someone to ask him questions.’ One young man from among them went and asked, ‘Son of my uncle, what is the greatest of the great sins?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is drinking wine.’ He went back and informed them about it. They said, ‘Go back and ask again.’ He went back and he (the Imam) said, ‘Did I not say, O son of a brother, that it is drinking wine?’ He went back and informed them and they told him to go back again. They were there that he went back to him (the Imam) and asked him. He (the Imam) said, ‘Did I not say, O son of a brother that it is drinking wine? Drinking wine takes the drinker to fornication, theft, murder of what Allah has prohibited, paganism and the effects of wine goes above all sins like trees that go above all other trees.’”
4. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shamir from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has condemned because of wine ten characters. Of such characters is the planter, the keeper, the seller, the buyer, the drinker, the payment receiver, the squeezer, the carrier, the one being carried to and the server of wine.’”
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Barqiy in a marfu‘ manner from Hafs ibn al-A‘war who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that I use a small water container. It is said that if wine is kept in it (water container), then al-Bakhtaj (a certain liquid item for personal use) is kept in it, it is better for it. In the small water container, wine is kept and it then is shaken, then it is poured out and then al-Bakhtaj is kept in it. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful (after washing it clean).”’

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Harun ibn Muslim from Mas’adah ibn Sadaqah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Once there was a group of people with my father and they had different views about al-Nabidh. Certain ones among them said, “The cupful (of al-Nabidh) which is intoxicating is unlawful.” Others said, “Al-Nabidh in small quantity does not intoxicate but it is unlawful in large quantity.” They referred the matter to my father, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who said, “On the basis of fairness and justice if nothing has been placed in the cup it would never become full. This applies to the other cup also. If nothing has been placed in, it would not intoxicate.” He (the Imam) said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If a small quantity of that which in large quantity intoxicates, enters one’s vein, Allah will make that vein suffer because of three hundred sixty kinds of torments.”””
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ غِيَاثٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) كَرِهَ أَنْ تُسْقَى الدَّوَابُّ الْخَمْرَ .
7. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father from Ghiyath who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, disliked one’s making the animals drink wine.’”
8. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘If one refrains from drinking wine for the sake of something other than Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, Allah will provide him drink from the sealed wine of the garden (paradises). He (the narrator) then said, ‘He does not refrain from it for the sake of Allah.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is (just as I said it is) to protect his soul.’”

Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ibrahim ibn Ishaq, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ahmad, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah, from Mehzam who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘If one refrains from drinking wine for his own protection Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, will provide him drink from the sealed wine of the garden (paradises).”’
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Yahya ibn al-Mubarak from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jabalah from Sama‘ah ibn Mehran from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘Stay away from wickedness, idols, and false words.’ (22:30) He (the Imam) said, ‘It is music and singing.’”
2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from abu Jamilah from abu ‘Usamah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Music (and singing) is the nest of hypocrisy.’”
3. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Sulayman ibn Sama‘ah from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Qasim from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that when Adam, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, died, Iblis and Qabil expressed joy and came together in the land. Thereafter Iblis and Qabil set up musical instruments and means of amusement to rejoice at the death of Adam, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. Thus whatever is there on earth of this sort in which people take pleasure is because of that.”
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Ali ibn ’Isma‘il from ibn Muskan from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once heard abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘music (and singing) is of such things for which Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has warned with punishment in the fire.’ He (the Imam) then read this verse, ‘There are people who pay for worthless tales (or activities) that deviates them from the path of Allah without their realizing such bad results. They treat the signs of Allah with ridicule. It is such people who will suffer a humiliating torment.’ (31:6)”
5. Ibn abu ‘Umayr has narrated from Mehran ibn Muhammad who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘music (and singing) are of the things about which Allah has said, ‘Among people there are those who buy useless things in the form of words to mislead people from the path of Allah.’”
6. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad ibn Muslim from abu al-Sabbah al-Kinaniy who has said the following: “About the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . those who do not attend al-Zur,’ (25:72) abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It (al-Zur’ah) is music (and singing).”’
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) أَنْهَاكُمْ عَنِ الزَّفْنِ وَ الْمِزْمَارِ وَ عَنِ الْكُوبَاتِ وَ الْكَبَرَاتِ .
7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘I forbid dancing, use of flutes, smaller and bigger drums.’”
8. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Washsha’ who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying that once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, was asked about music (and singing). He (the Imam) said, ’It is in the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . among people there are those who buy useless things in the form of words to mislead others from the path of Allah.’”
9. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Sa‘id ibn Junah from Hammad from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz who has said the following: “Once we arrived in al-Madinah and visited abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who asked us, ‘Where have you lodged?’ We said, ‘It is with so and so, the owner of singing slave-girls.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You must remain honorable.’ By Allah we did not understand what he (the Imam) meant and we thought perhaps he wants us to be kind to him (owner of the lodging). We returned to him (the Imam) and asked, ‘We did not understand your words, ‘Be honorable.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Have you not heard the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘When they pass by useless things they pass honorably.’ (25:72)”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Harun ibn Muslim from Mas’adah ibn Ziyad who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when a man said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul and the souls of my parents in service for your cause, I enter my WC (water-closet) and I have neighbors who have singing slave-girls who play musical instruments and perhaps I sit longer, listening to them.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You must not do so.’ The man said, ‘By Allah, I do not go to them; it is only my listening to them with my ears.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘For the sake of Allah, have you not heard Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, saying, “...the ears, eyes, and hearts will all be held responsible for their deeds.” (17:36)’ He replied, ‘Yes, by Allah, as if I have not heard this verse of the book of Allah from non-Arab or Arab people. However, I will not return to it if Allah so wills and I ask forgiveness from Allah. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must go and take a shower, then ask what you want, because you were involved in a great thing and how terrible your condition could have been had you remained in such condition! Praise Allah and ask Him to forgive you because of what He dislikes and He dislikes only bad and indecent matters; and you must leave evil and indecent things to indecent people; everything has its associates.’”
11. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Salmah ibn al-Khattab from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad from ‘Imran al-Za‘faraniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If Allah grants a bounty to a person and that person comes to that bounty with a flute, he has not appreciated it; and if one is affected by a misfortune and he comes in such condition with mourning (professional mourner) he has disregarded it also.’” (Expressing joy and grief through unlawful ways is harmful.)

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Yunus ibn Ya‘qub from ‘Abd al-‘Ala’ who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about music (and singing). I said that they think the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has granted permission in saying, ‘We have come to you, we have come to you, so offer us greetings, offer us greetings, we will offer you greetings.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘They have spoken a lie. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, “We did not create the heavens and the earth just for fun. (21:16) Had We wanted to play games, We could have certainly done so with things at hand. (21:17) We bring forward the Truth to crush and destroy falsehood; it is doomed to be banished. Woe to you for your way of thinking about Allah!” (21:18)’ He (the Imam) then said, ’Woe upon the one who ascribes something to one who is not present in the gathering.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from abu Ayyub from Muhammad ibn Muslim and abu ai-Sabbah af-Kinaniy who has said the following: “About the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . those who do not attend al-Zur . . .’ (25:72) abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is music (and singing).”’
14. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Ishaq ibn Jarir who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘There is Satan called al-Qafandar. If barbat (a musical instrument) is played in a house for forty days and men come to him then that Satan places every part of his (Satan’s) body on every part of the body of the owner of the house, then blows a blow; and thereafter he will not mind even if people go in on to his women.’”
15. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Ibrahim ibn abu al-Balad from Zayd al-Shahham who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The house of music (and singing) is not safe from tragedy, prayers are not accepted and angels do not enter in it.’”
16. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Mehran ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Harun who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘(The gathering for) music (and singing) is a gathering to the participant of which Allah does not look. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, ‘There are people who pay for worthless tales (or activities) that deviates them from the path of Allah without their realizing such bad results...’ (31:6)”
17. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa or others from abu Dawud al-Mustariq who has said the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If barbat is played in one’s house for forty days Allah gives its control to a Satan called al-Qafandar who sits on every part of the body of the owner of the house. When this happens bashfulness (the sense to feel ashamed of one’s indecent acts) is taken away from him and he does not mind whatever he says or is said about him.’”
18. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Madiniy from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about music (and singing) when I was present. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not enter the houses whose inhabitants Allah disregards.’”
19. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Yasir al-Khadim who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one keeps his soul clean of al-Ghina’ (music (and singing)), Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, commands the winds to move a tree in the garden (paradises). From this tree a sound is heard the like of which is never heard, and those who fail to keep their souls clean of al-Ghina’ (music (and singing)) will not be able to hear it.’”
20. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ali ibn Ma‘bad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Khazzaz from Ali ibn ‘ Abd al- Rahman from Kulayb al-Saydawiy who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Playing ‘Ud (a certain musical instrument) grows hypocrisy just as water grows green plants.’”
21. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ahmad ibn Yusuf ibn ‘Aqil from his father from Musa ibn Habib who has said the following: “Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah does not grant holiness to a nation in which barbat sounds and the (false) eulogies that cause pain.’”
22. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Jahm from Hamid who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once asked me, ‘Where have you been?’ I then thought that he knows the place where I was. I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I was passing by so and so and he kept me, I went in his house and looked at his slave-girls.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘That is such a gathering to the inhabitants of which Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, does not look. Have you placed your family and assets in the trust of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious?”’
23. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn Mahbub from ‘ Anbasah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Listening to al-Ghina’ (music (and singing)) and useless things grows hypocrisy just as water grows green plants.’”
24. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Ibrahim al-Armaniy from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one listens to a speaker he worships him. If the speaker conveys from Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, he has worshipped Allah; but if he conveys from Satan he has worshipped Satan.’”
