    علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، ومحمد بن إسماعيل، عن الفضل بن شاذان جميعا، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن هشام بن الحكم، عن أبي الحسن صلوات الله عليه في الرجل يطلي ويتدلك بالزيت والدقيق، قال: لا بأس به.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn al-Hakam who has said the following: “About the case of a man who rubs his body with flour and oil after lime, abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, has said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

    علي، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن محمد بن أسلم الجبلي، عن علي بن أبي حمزة، عن أبان بن تغلب قال: قلت لابي عبدالله عليه السلام: إنا لنسافر ولايكون معنا نخالة فنتدلك بالدقيق فقال: لا بأس إنما الفساد فيما أضربالبدن وأتلف المال فأما ما أصلح البدن فإنه ليس بفساد إني ربما أمرت غلامي فلت لي النقي بالزيت فأتدلك به.

    16. Ali has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Aslam al-Jabaliy from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from Aban ibn Taghlib who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Sometimes when on a journey we do not find bran; if we can rub with flour.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful. It is bad only when belongings are destroyed and the body is harmed. If body is benefited then it is not bad. I sometimes command my slave to prepare bleached flour with oil and I rub with it.’”

    محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن علي بن الحكم، عن سيف بن عميرة قال: خرج أبوعبدالله عليه السلام من الحمام فتلبس وتعمم فقال لي: إذا خرجت من الحمام فتعمم، قال: فما تركت العمامة عند خروجي من الحمام في شتاء ولا صيف.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Sayf ibn ‘Amirah who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, came out of the bathhouse, dressed, wore his turban and said to me, ‘When you come out of bathhouse wear a turban.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I thereafter would always wear a turban after coming out of the bathhouse in winter and summer.’”

    علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن رجل، عن أبي عبدالله عليه السلام قال: سألته عن الرجل يطلي فيبول وهو قائم؟ قال: لا بأس به.

    18. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from a man who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who applies lime and urinates standing. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful. 5 ”

    محمد بن يحيى، عن علي بن الحسن التيمي، عن محمد بن أبي حمزة، عن عمر ابن يزيد، عن أبي عبدالله عليه السلام قال: كان أميرالمؤمنين صلوات الله عليه يقول: ألا لا يستلقين أحدكم في الحمام فإنه يذيب شحم الكليتين ولا يدلكن رجليه بالخزف فإنه يورث الجذام.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hassan al-Taymiy from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah from ‘Umar ibn Yazid who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘You must not lie down on your back in the bathhouse; it melts the fat of kidneys and must not rub your feet with pottery because it may cause leprosy.”’

    محمد بن يحيى رفعه، عن عبدالله بن مسكان قال: كنا جماعة من أصحابنا دخلنا الحمام فلما خرجنا لقينا أبوعبدالله عليه السلام فقال لنا: من أين أقبلتم؟ فقلنا له: من الحمام فقال: أنقى الله غسلكم فقلنا له: جعلنا فداك، وإنا جئنا معه حتى دخل الحمام فجلسنا له حتى خرج فقلنا له: أنقى الله غسلك فقال: طهركم الله.

    20. Muhammad ibn Yahya in a marfu‘ manner has narrated the following from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muskan: “Once we in a group of our people entered a bathhouse and when coming out we met abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who asked us, ‘Wherefrom are you coming?’ We replied, ‘We are coming from the bathhouse.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘May Allah make your bathing pure and clean.’ We then said, ‘We pray to Allah to keep our souls in service for your cause.’ We then went with him (the Imam). He (the Imam) entered the bathhouse and we waited until he came out, then we said, ‘May Allah make your bathing pure and clean.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘May Allah cleanse you.’”

  7. 12450Al-Kafi

    محمد بن الحسن، وعلي بن محمد بن بندار، عن إبراهيم بن إسحاق النهاوندي، عن عبدالرحمن بن حماد، عن أبي مريم الانصاري رفعه قال: إن الحسن بن علي عليهما السلام خرج من الحمام فلقيه إنسان فقال: طاب استحمامك فقال: يا لكع وما تصنع بالاست ههنا(1) فقال: طاب حميمك فقال: أما تعلم أن الحميم العرق قال: فطاب حمامك قال: وإذا طاب حمامي فأي شئ لي ولكن قل طهر ما طاب منك وطاب ما طهر منك(2).

Muhammad ibn al-Hassan and Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar have narrated from Ibrahim ibn Ishaq al-Nahawandiy from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn Hammad from abu Maryam al-Ansariy in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Once al-Hassan ibn Ali, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, came out of the bathhouse and someone met him and said, ‘I wish you a fine bathing Istihmam.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You are poor in vocabulary, why does the word ‘’1st’ (meaning your seeking bath or the word’s other meaning which is ‘buttock’) need to be mentioned?’ He then said, ‘I wish you a good ‘Humaym’ . He (the Imam) said, ‘Did you not know that ‘Humaym’ means perspiration?’ He then said, ‘May your bathhouse be nice.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If you wish a nice bathhouse then what is for me in it? You should instead say, ‘I wish purity for what is nice of you and nicety of what is pure of you.’”

    عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن محمد بن عيسى، عن إسماعيل بن يسار، عن عثمان بن عفان السدوسي، عن بشير النبال قال: سألت أبا جعفر عليه السلام عن الحمام فقال: تريد الحمام؟ فقلت: نعم قال: فأمر بإسخان الحمام ثم دخل فاتزر بإزار وغطى ركبتيه وسرته ثم أمر صاحب الحمام فطلى ما كان خارجا من الازار ثم قال: اخرج عني ثم طلى هو ما تحته بيده ثم قال: هكذا فافعل.

    22. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ’Isma‘il ibn Yasar from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan al-Sadusiy from Bashir al-Nabbal who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about using a bathhouse. He (the Imam) asked, ‘Do you want to take a bath?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I like to take a bath.’ He (the Imam) commanded to warm up the bathhouse. He then entered in it and wore a loincloth, which covered from his belly button down to his knees. Then he commanded the owner of the bathhouse to apply on him (lime or oil) on what was not covered by the loincloth. Then he (the Imam) asked him to move away. He (the Imam) then applied with his hand on the area under the loincloth and said, ‘This is how you must take a bath.’”

    سهل رفعه قال: قال أبوعبدالله عليه السلام: لا يدخل الرجل مع ابنه الحمام فينظر إلى عورته.

    23. Sahl in a marfu‘ manner has narrated the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘A man must not enter a bathhouse with his son to allow him look at his private parts.’”

  10. 12453Al-Kafi

    علي بن محمد بن بندار، عن إبراهيم بن إسحاق، عن يوسف بن السخت رفعه قال: قال أبوعبدالله عليه السلام: لا تتك في الحمام فإنه يذيب شحم الكليتين، ولا تسرح في الحمام فإنه يرقق الشعر، ولا تغسل رأسك بالطين فإنه يذهب بالغيرة، ولا تتدلك بالخزف فإنه يورث البرص، ولا تمسح وجهك بالازار فإنه يذهب بماء الوجه.

    24. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ibrahim ibn Ishaq from Yusuf ibn al-Sukht in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must not lean in a bathhouse; it melts the fat of kidneys. You must not comb in it; it thins out the hairs, do not wash your head with clay; it destroys self-esteem, do not rub (your feet) with pottery; it may cause leprosy and do not wipe your face with loincloths; it destroys the beauty of the face.’”

    علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن علي بن أسباط، عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: لا تغسلوا رؤوسكم بطين مصر فإنه يذهب بالغيرة ويورث الدياثة.

    25. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Afi ibn Asbat who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Do not wash your head with the clay of Misr (Egypt); it destroys self-esteem and may cause one to become a pimp.’”

  12. 12455Al-Kafi

    محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن أبي يحيى الواسطي، عن بعض أصحابنا، عن أبي الحسن الماضي عليه السلام قال: العورة عورتان القبل والدبر، فأما الدبر مستور بالاليتين فإذا سترت القضيب والبيضتين فقد سترت العورة.

    26. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from abu Yahya al-Wasitiy from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Madiy, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Private parts are two: the front and back. The back is covered with the rump. If you cover the penis and testicles you have covered your private parts.’” In another Hadith it is said, ‘The back is covered with the rump. You can cover the front with your hand.’

    علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن غير واحد، عن أبي عبدالله عليه السلام قال: النظر إلى عورة من ليس بمسلم مثل نظرك إلى عورة الحمار(1).

    27. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from more than one person who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Looking at the private parts of non-Muslims is like looking at the private parts of donkeys.’”

  14. 12457Al-Kafi

    محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمدبن محمد، عن علي بن الحكم، عن أبان بن عثمان، عن ابن أبي يعفور قال، سألت أبا عبدالله عليه السلام أيتجرد الرجل عند صب الماء ترى عورته أو يصب عليه الماء أو يرى هو عورة الناس؟ فقال: كان أبي يكره ذلك من كل أحد(1).

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from ibn abu Ya‘fur who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, if a nude person during pouring water on him can look at his own private parts, or water can be poured on him or he can look at the private parts of others. He (the Imam) said, ‘My father disliked all of it on the part of everyone.’”

    علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن رفاعة، عن أبي عبدالله عليه السلام قال: من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فلا يدخل حليلته الحمام(2).

    29. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Rifa‘ah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘One who believes in Allah and in the Day of Judgment must not allow his wife to go to a bathhouse.’”

    عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن عثمان بن عيسى، عن سماعة، عن أبي عبدالله عليه السلام قال: من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فلا يرسل حليلته إلى الحمام.

    30. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘One who believes in Allah and in the Day of Judgment must not send his wife to a bathhouse.’”

    عنه، عن إسماعيل بن مهران، عن محمد بن أبي حمزة، عن علي بن يقطين قال: قلت لابي الحسن عليه السلام: أقرء القرآن في الحمام وأنكح؟ قال: لا بأس.

    31. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ’Isma‘il ibn Mehran from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah from Ali ibn Yaqtin who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Can I read Quran in a bathhouse or do sex?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”

  18. 12461Al-Kafi

    علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن حمادبن عيسى، عن ربعي بن عبدالله، عن محمد بن مسلم قال: سألت أبا جعفر عليه السلام أكان أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام ينهى عن قراء‌ة القرآن في الحمام؟ قال: لا إنما نهى أن يقرء الرجل وهو عريان فأما إذا كان عليه إزار فلا بأس.

    32. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Rib‘iy ibn ‘ Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, if ’Amir al-Mu’minin prohibited reading al-Quran in a bathhouse. He (the Imam) said, ’No, he did not prohibit. He however, prohibited reading while nude but if one has a loincloth on him, then it is not harmful.

    علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن حماد، عن الحلبي، عن أبي عبدالله عليه السلام قال: لا بأس للرجل أن يقرء القرآن في الحمام إذا كان يريد به وجه الله ولا يريد ينظر كيف صوته.

    33. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not harmful if one reads al-Quran in a bathhouse if he does it for the sake of Allah, but not to find out how his voice is.’”

    بعض أصحابنا، عن ابن جمهور، عن محمد بن القاسم، عن ابن أبي يعفور، عن أبي عبدالله عليه السلام قال: (قال:) لا تضطجع في الحمام فإنه يذيب شحم الكليتين.

    34. Certain persons of our people have narrated from ibn Jumhur from Muhammad ibn al-Qasim from ibn abu Ya‘fur who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not lie down in a bathhouse; it melts the fat of the kidneys.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عَمِّهِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ بَعْضِ مَنْ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ يَقُولُ مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَ الْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلَا يَدْخُلِ الْحَمَّامَ إِلَّا بِمِئْزَرٍ

    35. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Umar ibn Ali ibn ‘Umar ibn Yazid from his uncle Muhammad ibn ‘Umar from those who narrated to him who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would say, ‘One who believes in Allah and in the Day of Judgment must not enter a bathhouse without a loincloth.’ One day he entered a bathhouse and applied lime that covered his body. He (the Imam) then dropped the loincloth and one of his slaves said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul and the souls of my parents in service for your cause, you always instruct us about the necessity of loincloth but you have dropped it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Do you not know that lime has fully covered?”’

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ رِجَالِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا يَدْخُلِ الرَّجُلُ مَعَ ابْنِهِ الْحَمَّامَ فَيَنْظُرَ إِلَى عَوْرَتِهِوَ قَالَ لَيْسَ لِلْوَالِدَيْنِ أَنْ يَنْظُرَا إِلَى عَوْرَةِ الْوَلَدِ وَ لَيْسَ لِلْوَلَدِ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى عَوْرَةِ الْوَالِدِ وَ قَالَ لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) النَّاظِرَ وَ الْمَنْظُورَ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْحَمَّامِ بِلَا مِئْزَرٍ .وَ قَالَ لَيْسَ لِلْوَالِدَيْنِ أَنْ يَنْظُرَا إِلَى عَوْرَةِ الْوَلَدِ وَ لَيْسَ لِلْوَلَدِ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى عَوْرَةِ الْوَالِدِ وَ قَالَ لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) النَّاظِرَ وَ الْمَنْظُورَ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْحَمَّامِ بِلَا مِئْزَرٍ .

    36. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Ja‘far from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘A man must not enter a bathhouse with his son where he can look at his private parts.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Parents cannot look at the private parts of their children, and children cannot look at the private parts of their parents.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘The Messenger of Allah has condemned the looking and the one being looked at in a bathhouse when one is without a loincloth.’”

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ سَعْدَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ دَخَلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) الْحَمَّامَ فَقَالَ لَهُ صَاحِبُ الْحَمَّامِ أُخْلِيهِ لَكَ فَقَالَ لَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِي ذَلِكَ الْمُؤْمِنُ أَخَفُّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ .

    37. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ahmad ibn Ishaq from Sa‘dan from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once entered a bathhouse and the owner of the bathhouse asked him (the Imam), ‘Must I vacate it for you?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘That is not necessary. A believing person (his needs) is lighter than that.’”

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُوسَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنْ أَخَذَ مِنَ الْحَمَّامِ خَزَفَةً فَحَكَّ بِهَا جَسَدَهُ فَأَصَابَهُ الْبَرَصُ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ إِلَّا نَفْسَهُ وَ مَنِ اغْتَسَلَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ الَّذِي قَدِ اغْتُسِلَ فِيهِ فَأَصَابَهُ الْجُذَامُ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ إِلَّا نَفْسَهُقَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنَ الْعَيْنِ فَقَالَ كَذَبُوا يَغْتَسِلُ فِيهِ الْجُنُبُ مِنَ الْحَرَامِ وَ الزَّانِي وَ النَّاصِبُ الَّذِي هُوَ شَرُّهُمَا وَ كُلُّ خَلْقٍ مِنْ خَلْقِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ يَكُونُ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ مِنَ الْعَيْنِ إِنَّمَا شِفَاءُ الْعَيْنِ قِرَاءَةُ الْحَمْدِ وَ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ وَ آيَةِ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَ الْبَخُورُ بِالْقُسْطِ وَ الْمُرِّ وَ اللُّبَانِ .

    38. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn Muhammad from Sa‘d ibn Muhammad ibn Salim from Musa ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Musa who has said that narrated to us Ali ibn Ja‘far the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one picks up a piece of pottery from a bathhouse and rubs himself with it, then becomes ill with leprosy he must not blame anyone except himself. One who washes with the used water of a bathhouse and becomes ill with leprosy, he also must not blame anyone else except himself.’ Muhammad ibn Ali has said, ‘I said to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that people of al-Madinah say, “There is cure (and protection) in it against the evil effect of the eyes.’” He (the Imam) said, ‘They have spoken a lie. In it people after unlawful sexual acts bathe and fornicators bathe. In it, the worst of all creatures that Allah has created, the enemies of Ahl al-Bayt, bathe and then they say that there is cure (and protection) in it against the evil effects of the eyes. Cure for the eyes because of such effect is in reading al-Hamd (Chapter one) and al-Ma‘udhatayn (chapters One Hundred Thirteen and One Hundred Fourteen), Ayatu al-Kursi (2:255) and burning incense of al-Qust, (a certain Indian or Arabian wood), al-Murr (gum of a certain tree) and al-Luban (frankincense).”’

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ السِّمْطِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ تَقْلِيمُ الْأَظْفَارِ وَ الْأَخْذُ مِنَ الشَّارِبِ وَ غَسْلُ الرَّأْسِ بِالْخِطْمِيِّ يَنْفِي الْفَقْرَ وَ يَزِيدُ فِي الرِّزْقِ .

    1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Sufyan af-Simt who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Cutting fingernails, trimming the mustache and washing the head with marshmallow plant banish poverty and increases one’s sustenance.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ غَسْلُ الرَّأْسِ بِالْخِطْمِيِّ فِي كُلِّ جُمُعَةٍ أَمَانٌ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ وَ الْجُنُونِ .

    2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Washing one’s head every Friday with marshmallow plant is immunity from albinism and insanity.’”

    أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) غَسْلُ الرَّأْسِ بِالْخِطْمِيِّ يَذْهَبُ بِالدَّرَنِ وَ يَنْفِي الْأَقْذَاءَ .

    3. Ahmad ibn Muhammad from has narrated from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Washing the head with marshmallow plant removes dirt and fine dust.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ سَعْدَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنْ أَخَذَ مِنْ شَارِبِهِ وَ قَلَّمَ أَظْفَارَهُ وَ غَسَلَ رَأْسَهُ بِالْخِطْمِيِّ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ كَانَ كَمَنْ أَعْتَقَ نَسَمَةً .

    4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Musa ibn Sa‘dan from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘One who trims his fingernails and washes his head with marshmallow plant every Friday is like one who sets free one human soul from bondage and slavery.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّيْرَفِيِّ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْخَالِقِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ غَسْلُ الرَّأْسِ بِالْخِطْمِيِّ نُشْرَةٌ .

    5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Ali from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad al- Sayrafiy from ’Isma‘il ibn ‘Abd al-Khaliq who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Washing the head with marshmallow plant is a protective charm.’”

    عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ بُزُرْجَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ غَسْلُ الرَّأْسِ بِالسِّدْرِ يَجْلِبُ الرِّزْقَ جَلْباً .

    6. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from Mansur ibn Buzurj who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Washing the head with lotus tree leaves attracts sustenance with a strong attraction.’”

    عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الثَّوْرِيِّ الْعَطَّارِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ الْعَلَوِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَمَّا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ رَسُولَهُ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) بِإِظْهَارِ الْإِسْلَامِ وَ ظَهَرَ الْوَحْيُ رَأَى قِلَّةً مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَ كَثْرَةً مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَاهْتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) هَمّاً شَدِيداً فَبَعَثَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِلَيْهِ جَبْرَئِيلَ ( عليه السلام ) بِسِدْرٍ مِنْ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنْتَهَى فَغَسَلَ بِهِ رَأْسَهُ فَجَلَا بِهِ هَمَّهُ .

    7. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Ubayd ibn Yahya al-Thawriy al-‘ Attar from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-‘Alawiy from his father from his grandfather who has said the following: “Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, commanded the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, to publicly announce his mission, he saw the small number of Muslims and the large number of the pagans. He (the Messenger of Allah) felt strongly depressed. Then Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent Jibril, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, with lotus tree leaves from the ultimate lotus tree. He washed with it his head and his depression went away.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمٍ الْفَرَّاءِ قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) النُّورَةُ طَهُورٌ .

    1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Sulaym al-Farra’ who has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, Time is a cleansing (agent).”’

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَجَّالِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) الْحَمَّامَ فَقَالَ لِي يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ اطَّلِ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّمَا اطَّلَيْتُ مُنْذُ أَيَّامٍ فَقَالَ اطَّلِ فَإِنَّهَا طَهُورٌ .

    2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Hajj al from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “Once I went to a bathhouse with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. He (the Imam) said, ‘O ‘Abd al- Rahman, you should apply lime.’ I said, ‘I had applied sometimes ago.’ He (the Imam) said, ’Apply it again; it is cleansing.’”

    أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِي كَهْمَسٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ قَالَ دَخَلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) الْحَمَّامَ وَ أَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَ لَا تَطَّلِي فَقُلْتُ عَهْدِي بِهِ مُنْذُ أَيَّامٍ فَقَالَ أَ مَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّهَا طَهُورٌ .

    3. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from ibn Faddal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from abu Kahmas from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, entered a bathhouse when I was coming out. He (the Imam) said, ‘O Muhammad, do you like to apply (lime)?’ I replied, ‘Just a few days ago I had applied it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Do you know that it is purifying?”’

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ عَمَّنْ رَوَاهُ قَالَ بَعَثَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) ابْنَ أَخِيهِ فِي حَاجَةٍ فَجَاءَ وَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَدِ اطَّلَى بِالنُّورَةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) اطَّلِ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا عَهْدِي بِالنُّورَةِ مُنْذُ ثَلَاثٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ النُّورَةَ طَهُورٌ .

    4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from Khalaf ibn Hammad from those who narrated to him who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once sent the son of his brother for something he needed. He returned when abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, had applied lime paste. He (the Imam) said, ‘Apply lime paste.’ He said, ‘Only three days ago I had applied it.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Applying lime is purifying.’”

    5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Nuhaykiy from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Remove hairs from yourselves; it beautifies.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَهُ أَقُودُهُ فَأَدْخَلْتُهُ الْحَمَّامَ فَرَأَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَتَنَوَّرُ فَدَنَا مِنْهُ أَبُو بَصِيرٍ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا بَصِيرٍ تَنَوَّرْ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا تَنَوَّرْتُ أَوَّلَ مِنْ أَمْسِ وَ الْيَوْمَ الثَّالِثَ فَقَالَ أَ مَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّهَا طَهُورٌ فَتَنَوَّرْ .

    6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from certain persons of his people from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once led abu Basir to a bathhouse and I saw abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, apply lime. Abu Basir went close to him (the Imam) and offered greeting of peace. He (the Imam) asked, ‘O abu Basir, do you like to apply lime paste?’ He replied, ‘Only three days ago I had applied it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Do you know that it is purification? So you should apply it.’”

    8. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘I like for the believers to apply (lime) paste after every fifteen days.”’

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ جَمِيعاً عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْمِنْقَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ السُّنَّةُ فِي النُّورَةِ فِي كُلِّ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْماً فَإِنْ أَتَتْ عَلَيْكَ عِشْرُونَ يَوْماً وَ لَيْسَ عِنْدَكَ فَاسْتَقْرِضْ عَلَى اللَّهِ .

    9. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from all Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Ahmad ibn al-Mubarak from al-Husayn ibn Ahmad al-Minqariy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The Sunnah about lime paste is to apply it after every fifteen days. If it becomes twenty days but you do not have it, you must borrow on the account of Allah.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قِيلَ لَهُ يَزْعُمُ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ أَنَّ النُّورَةَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ مَكْرُوهَةٌ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ حَيْثُ ذَهَبْتَ أَيُّ طَهُورٍ أَطْهَرُ مِنَ النُّورَةِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ .

    10. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah in a marfu ‘ has said the following: “Once it was said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, that certain people think applying lime paste on Friday is detestable. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not as they think. Which cleansing agent is more cleansing than lime on Friday?”’

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَ الْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلَا يَتْرُكْ عَانَتَهُ فَوْقَ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً وَ لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَ الْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تَدَعَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهَا فَوْقَ عِشْرِينَ يَوْماً .

    11. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘One who believes in Allah and in the Day of Judgment, must not keep his pubic hairs for more than forty days. It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and in the Day of Judgment to keep that in her case for more than twenty days.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ عَنْ عَمَّارٍ السَّابَاطِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) طَلْيَةٌ فِي الصَّيْفِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ عَشْرٍ فِي الشِّتَاءِ .

    12. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ from Ahmad ibn Tha’labah from ‘Ammar al-Sabatiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Applying (lime paste) once in summer is better than applying it ten times in winter.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنِ السَّيَّارِيِّ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) مَنْ أَرَادَ الِاطِّلَاءَ بِالنُّورَةِ فَأَخَذَ مِنَ النُّورَةِ بِإِصْبَعِهِ فَشَمَّهُ وَ جَعَلَ عَلَى طَرَفِ أَنْفِهِ وَ قَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ دَاوُدَ كَمَا أَمَرَنَا بِالنُّورَةِ لَمْ تُحْرِقْهُ النُّورَةُ .

    13. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from al-Sayyariy in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one wants to apply lime paste, he must take from it with his finger, smell it, place it on the tip of his nose and say, ‘O Allah, grant favors to Sulayman ibn Dawud who taught us applying lime paste’ the lime will not burn him.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَطْلِي الْعَانَةَ وَ مَا تَحْتَ الْأَلْيَتَيْنِ فِي كُلِّ جُمُعَةٍ .

    14. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Hudhayfah ibn Mansur who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would apply lime paste to the pubic region and under the rump every Friday.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ زُرَيْقِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ سَدِيرٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ مَنْ قَالَ إِذَا اطَّلَى بِالنُّورَةِ اللَّهُمَّ طَيِّبْ مَا طَهُرَ مِنِّي وَ طَهِّرْ مَا طَابَ مِنِّي وَ أَبْدِلْنِي شَعْراً طَاهِراً لَا يَعْصِيكَاللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي تَطَهَّرْتُ ابْتِغَاءَ سُنَّةِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ وَ ابْتِغَاءَ رِضْوَانِكَ وَ مَغْفِرَتِكَ فَحَرِّمْ شَعْرِي وَ بَشَرِي عَلَى النَّارِ وَ طَهِّرْ خَلْقِي وَ طَيِّبْ خُلُقِي وَ زَكِّ عَمَلِي وَ اجْعَلْنِي مِمَّنْ يَلْقَاكَ عَلَى الْحَنِيفِيَّةِ السَّمْحَةِ مِلَّةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلِكَ وَ دِينِ مُحَمَّدٍ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) حَبِيبِكَ وَ رَسُولِكَ عَامِلًا بِشَرَائِعِكَ تَابِعاً لِسُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) آخِذاً بِهِ مُتَأَدِّباً بِحُسْنِ تَأْدِيبِكَ وَ تَأْدِيبِ رَسُولِكَ وَ تَأْدِيبِ أَوْلِيَائِكَ الَّذِينَ غَذَوْتَهُمْ بِأَدَبِكَ وَ زَرَعْتَ الْحِكْمَةَ فِي صُدُورِهِمْ وَ جَعَلْتَهُمْ مَعَادِنَ لِعِلْمِكَ صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِمْمَنْ قَالَ ذَلِكَ طَهَّرَهُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْأَدْنَاسِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ وَ أَبْدَلَهُ شَعْراً لَا يَعْصِي اللَّهَ وَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَعْرَةٍ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ مَلَكاً يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ إِلَى أَنْ تَقُومَ السَّاعَةُ وَ إِنَّ تَسْبِيحَةً مِنْ تَسْبِيحِهِمْ تَعْدِلُ بِأَلْفِ تَسْبِيحَةٍ مِنْ تَسْبِيحِ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ .

    15. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father from Zurayq ibn al-Zubayr from Sadir who has said the following: “I once heard Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, saying, ‘When applying lime paste one should say, “O Lord, make pleasant what it has cleansed of me and cleanse what it has made pleasant of me. Replace it with clean hairs, which will not disobey You. O Lord, I have cleansed and sought to follow the Sunnah of the messengers, Your pleasure and forgiveness so make my hairs unlawful to the fire as well as my skin. O Lord, cleanse my body, my moral feelings, purify my acts and make me of those who meet You as a follower of the magnanimous religion of Ibrahim Your friend. Make me to meet You as a follower of the religion of Muhammad, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, your beloved one, Your messenger. (O Lord), make me to abide by Your laws, subordinate to the Sunnah of Your prophet, accept it to find discipline by its disciplines and the discipline of Your friends whom You have fed with Your discipline, planted wisdom in their chest and have made them the mines of Your knowledge. Please grant them favors.’” If one says the above Allah cleanses him from filth of the world and from sins and replaces his hairs with hairs, which will not disobey Allah. He will create with every hair of his body an angel who will say Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects) for him until the Day of Judgment. One Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects) of this angel is equal to one thousand Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects) of the inhabitants of earth.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا يُطَوِّلَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ شَعْرَ إِبْطِهِ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَتَّخِذُهُ مَخْبَأً لِيَسْتَتِرَ بِهِ .

    1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ’No one of you must allow the hairs of his underarms to grow long; Satan makes it his hiding place and cover.”’

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِي كَهْمَسٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) نَتْفُ الْإِبْطِ يُضْعِفُ الْمَنْكِبَيْنِ وَ كَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَطْلِي إِبْطَهُ .

    2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from abu Kahmas who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Pulling out the hairs of the underarms weakens the shoulders.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, applied lime paste as a hair remover.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ أَنَّ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ يَطْلِي إِبْطَهُ بِالنُّورَةِ فِي الْحَمَّامِ .

    3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn al-Hakam from Flafs ibn al-Bakhtariy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would apply lime paste on his underarms in the bathhouse.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ سَعْدَانَ قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ فِي الْحَمَّامِ فَرَأَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَطْلِي إِبْطَهُ فَأَخْبَرْتُ بِذَلِكَ أَبَا بَصِيرٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَيُّمَا أَفْضَلُ نَتْفُ الْإِبْطِ أَوْ حَلْقُهُ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ إِنَّ نَتْفَ الْإِبْطِ يُوهِي أَوْ يُضْعِفُ احْلِقْهُ .

    4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu as from Muhammad ibn Ali from Sa‘dan who has said the following: “I once was with abu Basir in a bathhouse and I saw abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, applying lime on his underarms. I informed abu Basir about it who asked saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, which is better; pulling out or shaving the hairs of the underarms?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘O abu Muhammad pulling out the hairs of the underarms weakens (the shoulders) so you must shave them.’”
