12. Muhammad ibn ‘Isa has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ali who has said the following: “I saw Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, wearing clothes of lentil color.’”
13. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muskan from al-Hassan al-Zayyat al-Basriy who has said the following: “My friend and I once visited abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when he (the Imam) was in a well- furnished home. He had a flowery sheet on him, his beard was trimmed and kohl (metallic color eye powder) was applied to his eyes. We asked him (the Imam) certain questions and when we were to leave, he (the Imam) said to me, ‘O Hassan,’ and I replied, ‘Yes, here I am, to obey your command.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Tomorrow come to me with your friend.’ I replied, ‘Yes, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause.’ The next day we went to meet him (the Imam) and he (the Imam) was in a house with no furnishing except a mat and was wearing a rough-textured shirt. He (the Imam) turned to my friend and said, ‘O brother from al-Basrah, yesterday you came to me when I was in the house of the woman. Yesterday was her day, the house is her house, and the furnishing is her furnishing. She had dressed up for me on condition that I dress up for her as she had dressed up for me. So do not think anything.’ My friend said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, by Allah there was something in my heart but now by Allah, Allah has removed what was in my heart. The truth is in what you just said.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from certain persons of his people in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, it is detestable to wear black except three items such as slippers, turbans and gowns.”’
2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from certain persons of his people from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Hudhafah ibn Mansur who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in al-Hirah (a city in Iraq) when the messenger of abu Ja‘far al-Mansur, the caliph came to call him. He (the Imam) asked for a raincoat, one side black and the other side white, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘I wear it but I know that it is the dress of the people of fire.”” (Black was the emblem of al-‘Abbaside rulers. Imam wore it due to Taqiyah (caution because of fear)
3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Sulayman ibn Rashid from his father who has said the following: “I once saw Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, wearing a black outer garment and a blue Taylisan (pallium).’”

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from and Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar all from ibn Faddal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from his father who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Al-Kattan (linen) is of the garment of the Prophets and it helps the flesh to grow,’”
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not wear wool or hairs unless because of illness.’”
2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman from Shu’ayb from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘You must wear clothes of cotton because it is the cloth of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, as well as our cloth. He (the Messenger of Allah) did not wear wool or hairs except because of illness.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Uthman ibn Sa‘id from ‘Abd al-Karim al-Hamadaniy from abu Tamamah who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far, al-Thaniy, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Our land is cold. What do you say about wearing fur?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Wear that which is from edible animals and verify (that it is from edible animals).”’
4. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from ibn Faddal from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Kathir al- Khazzaz from his father who has said the following: “I saw abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, wearing a shirt of rough texture underneath his clothes, over which was a woolen gown over which was a thick shirt and I felt it, and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, people dislike wearing wool.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Not so, my father, Muhammad ibn Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would wear it as well as Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, did. They, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, wore their clothes of the roughest texture in their Salat (prayer) and we also do so.’”
5. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from abu Jarir al-Qummiy who has said the following: “I once asked al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about feathers; if it is lawful. He (the Imam) said, ‘My father would use a pillow of feathers.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, came out for Salat (prayer) and certain ones of his children had a gown of yellow al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) with ribbon work of yellow al- Khazz.’”
2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, wore a gown of al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) valued at fifty dinar and al-Khazz ribbon work of fifty dinar.’”
3. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajj aj who has said the following: “I, once, was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when a man asked him (the Imam) about al- Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water). He (the Imam) said, ‘Its use is not unlawful.’ He then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, in our land they are dogs that come out of the water.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘When they come out of the water do they then live on land?’ The man replied, ‘No, they do not live on land.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Its use is not unlawful.’”
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al- Salam, in winter would wear al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) decorated on both sides and a hat of al-Khazz for winter, then sell them in the summer and give its value in charity.’ He (the Imam) then read, ‘Who has made unlawful the beautiful things that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has brought out for His servants and the very fine kinds of means of sustenance. (7:31)’”
5. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from al-‘Is ibn al-Qasim from abu Dawud, Yusuf ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “I once visited abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and I was wearing a gown of al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) with its lining of al-Khazz, a Taylisan (pallium) of al-Khazz of very fine texture. I then said, ‘I am wearing a kind of clothing which I do not like.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Why is that so?’ I replied, ‘It is this Taylisan.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is the matter with it?’ I replied, ‘It is of al-Khazz.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is wrong with al-Khazz?’ I then said, ‘Its warp is of abrisam (silk from silk worm).’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is wrong with abrisam? It is not detestable if its warp is of abrisam, or its buttons or its emblems. Only all abrisam is detestable for men, and not for women.’”
6. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Musa ibn al-Qasim from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from abu Jamilah from a man who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘We the community of the family of Muhammad wear al- Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) and al-Yumnah (that which is made in Yemen).’”
7. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Sa‘d ibn Sa‘d who has said the following: “I once asked al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is al-Khazz that we wear.’ I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, that is fur.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If its fur is lawful so also is its skin.’”
عَنْهُ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ عِيسَى قَالَ كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الدَّوَابِّ الَّتِي يُعْمَلُ الْخَزُّ مِنْ وَبَرِهَا أَ سِبَاعٌ هِيَ فَكَتَبَ ( عليه السلام ) لَبِسَ الْخَزَّ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ وَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ جَدِّي ( عليهما السلام ) .
8. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ja‘far ibn ‘Isa who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about animals from the fur of which al- Khazz is made; if such animals are of predators.’ He (the Imam) wrote in answer, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, wore al-Khazz (garments made from skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) then my grandfather also did so.’”
9. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shamir from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that when al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was murdered, he wore a dark color Jubbah (gown) of al-Khazz (garments made of skin or fur of an animal that lives in water). They found thirty-three torn spots in it because of being hit with sword, spears or shooting arrows.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Hafs ibn ‘Umar (‘Amr) abu Muhammad Mu’adhdhin Ali ibn Yaqtin who has said the following: “I saw abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, performing Salat (prayer) in al-Rawdah and wore a jubbah (gown) of al-Khazz (garments made of skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) of the color of quince.’”
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Faddal and Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yasir who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, ‘Buy al-Khazz (garments made of skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) for yourself or if you like buy al-Washy.’ I then asked, ‘All with al- Washy?’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘ What is al-Washy ?’ I replied, ‘It is that which has no cotton in it and they say it is unlawful.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can wear what has cotton in it.’”
2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Yunus ibn Ya‘qub from al-Husayn ibn Salim al-‘Ijliy:That he delivered al-Washy to him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam.
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from Yunus ibn Ya‘qub who has said that narrated to me the one whom I trust that: he saw on the girls of abu al-Hassan al-Washy (al-Khazz, garments made of skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) .
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Men must not wear silk and clothes with brocades except during a war.’”
عَنْهُ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَمِيلَةَ عَنْ لَيْثٍ الْمُرَادِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَسَا أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ حُلَّةَ حَرِيرٍ فَخَرَجَ فِيهَا فَقَالَ مَهْلًا يَا أُسَامَةُ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُهَا مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فَاقْسِمْهَا بَيْنَ نِسَائِكَ .
2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Faddal from abu Jamilah from Layth al-Muradiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, made ‘Usamah ibn Zayd dress in silk (during a war). He (after the war) came out in public in that dress. He (the Messenger of Allah), said, ‘O ‘Usamah, wait. Those who wear this (silk) do not have a share (in morality) so you must divide it among your women.’”
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah ibn Mehran who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about dress of silk and brocades. He (the Imam) said, ‘During war it is not unlawful even if it has prints and pictures on it.’”
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Aban ‘Uthman from ’Isma‘il ibn al-Fadl who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not proper for men to wear silk, except during the time of war.’”
5. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-‘Abbas ibn Hilal al-Shamiy who has said the following: “I once said to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, those who eat tasteless food, wear garments of rough texture and appear very humble are very attractive to people.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Has it not come to your notice that Yusuf was a prophet and the son of a prophet who wore gowns decorated with brocades and buttons of gold. He would sit in the gathering of the pharaohs and issue judgments. People did not need his dress. They however needed his justice. What is needed of an Imam is that when he speaks he must speak the truth, keep his promise and must rule with justice. Allah does not make food unlawful or drinks which are lawful. He however, has made unlawful the unlawful things of small or large quantity; and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, ‘Who has made unlawful the beautiful things that Allah has brought out for His servants of the fine and clean sustenance?’ (7:32)”
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya Ahmad ibn Muhammad and others have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id fn al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman from Jarrah al-Mada’iniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, disliked shirts with borders decorated with silk as well as garments of silk, clothes with embroideries, and cushions of red color; he called them the cushion of Satan.’”
7. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Sama‘ah from more than one person from Aban al- Ahmar from Muhammad ibn Musiim who has said the folio wing: “Abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Silk garments are not proper, however, selling such garments is not unlawful.’”
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from certain persons of our people who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Women can wear silk garments decorated with embroideries, except in the state of Ihram.’”
9. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn Ali from al-‘Abbas ibn Musa from his father who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about abrisam and al-Qazz (kinds of silk from silk worm). He (the Imam) said, ‘They are the same.’”
10. it is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from al-Qasim ibn ‘Urwah from ‘Ubayd ibn Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not unlawful to use a garments which are made of al-Qazz if its warp or weft is of cotton or kattan (linen, the fibers of certain plants).”’
11. it is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “Al-Hassan ibn Qiyaman once asked abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a garment with its weft of al-Qazz and cotton in which al-Qazz is more than half: if one can use for Salat (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, had such a gown.’”
12. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from abu Ayyub from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is not proper for a woman to wear garments of all silk in the state of Ihram, however, in hot or cold weather it is not harmful.’”
13. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Salih ibn al-Sindy from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from abu al-Hassan al-Ahmasiy who has said the following: “Abu Sa‘id once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about al-Khamisah (a square-shaped gown with prints), when I was there, with its warp of abrisam (silk from silk worm); if it can be used in very cold weather. He (the Imam) commanded him to wear it.’”
14. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah from more than one person from Aban from ’Isma‘il ibn al-Fadl who has said the following: “About the case of a cloth which has silk in it abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If it is mixed with other fibers it then it is not unlawful.’”
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from ‘ Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “About the meaning of the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, . . and cleanse your clothes’, (74:4) abu £ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It means lift up (cut short) your clothes (instead of dragging them on the ground).”’
2. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ from Ahmad ibn ‘A’idh from abu Khadijah from Mu’alla’ ibn Khunayth who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin who lived among you once went to banu Diwan and bought three pieces of clothes for one dinar. One piece was a shirt, which in its length reached above his ankles, a loincloth, which in length reached to the middle of his leg, a gown that reached in his front side up to his breast and from the back down to his rump. He (’Amir al-Mu’minin) then raised his hand to the sky and continued praising Allah for providing him clothes until he (’Amir al-Mu’minin) reached his home and said, “This is the kind of clothes that is proper for the Muslims.’” Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘However, today they (Muslims) are not able to wear that kind of clothes, and if we do so they will say, “They have become insane and show off.” Allah, most Blessed, most High, says, “. . . and cleanse your clothes” meaning do not allow your clothes to be dragged on the ground. When our al-Q’a’im will rise this (the kind of clothes which ’Amir al- Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would wear) will be kind of his clothes.’”

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus ibn Ya’qub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ya‘qub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Hilal who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once commanded me to buy a loincloth for him. I said that I could only find wide ones. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must cut it and stitch its borders.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘My father has said, “Whatever of loincloth passes down the ankles is in the fire.’” Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Yunus ibn Ya‘qub a similar Hadith.
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ كَانَ مَعَ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) أَيَّامَ حُبِسَ بِبَغْدَادَ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ لِنَبِيِّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) وَ ثِيابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ وَ كَانَتْ ثِيَابُهُ طَاهِرَةً وَ إِنَّمَا أَمَرَهُ بِالتَّشْمِيرِ .
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn ‘Uthman from a man from the people of al-Yamamah who was with abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in jail in Baghdad who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, ‘Allah, most Blessed, most High, has said, to His Holy Prophet, ‘. . . and your clothes cleanse them,’ (74:4) his clothes were clean but He commanded him to raise them instead of keeping them long (that drag on the ground).”’

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn Mahbub from Hisham ibn Salim from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once advised a man from banu Tamim and said to him, ‘You must never allow the loincloth and shirt to hang down to drag; it is the sign of arrogance and Allah does not love arrogance.’”

Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Kufiy from ‘Ubays ibn Hisham from ibn from abu Hamzah in a marfu‘ manner has said, the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once saw a young man with his loincloths hanging low, and said to him, ‘Son, you must raise your loincloth; it will last longer and help clean your heart (from arrogance).”’
7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin when wearing a shirt would extend his hands. If the sleeves reached his fingers he would cut them short.’”
8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father from Muhammad ibn Sinan from al- Hassan al-Sayqal who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once asked me, ‘Do you like to see the shirt of ’Amir al- Mu’minin, Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam in which he sustained the injury, to show his blood (stain)?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I like to see it.’ He (the Imam) asked for it and it was brought in a basket. He (the Imam) opened and spread it out and it was a shirt made of cotton similar to those of al-Sunbalaniy (a place in Rome) and from the spot for its pocket down to the ground there was a white blood mark like the strike of a sword. He (the Imam) said, ‘This is the shirt of Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in which he was mortally wounded and these are the traces of his blood.’ I measured it around his body; it was three shibr and around its bottom it was twelve shibr (the space between the tip of thump and the small finger when they are opened and stretched.”

Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from al-Hajj al from Tha’labah Ibn Maymun from Zurarah ibn A’yan who has said the following: “I saw the shirt of Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in which he was mortally wounded. It was with abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, its bottom measured twelve shibr and around his body it was three shibr and I saw marks of blood splashed on it.’”
10. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn Ali from a man from Salmah Bayya’ al-Qalanis who has said the following: “I once was with abu Ja‘far, when abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, came. Abu Ja‘far, said, ‘You must cleanse your shirt.’ He left and we thought his shirt might have come in contact with something unclean. He came back and he (the Imam) said, ‘It just is as it was.’ We then asked saying, ‘We pray to Allah to keep our souls in service for your cause, what is wrong with his shirt?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘His shirt is long and I commanded him to shorten it; because Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said, ‘. . . and cleanse (shorten) your clothes.’ (74:4)”
11. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from Yahya al-Halabiy from ‘Abd al-Hamid al-Ta’iy from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has narrated the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, looked at a man who had dressed in a shirt that dragged on the ground. He (the Imam) said, ‘This cloth is not clean.’”
12. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah ibn Mehran who has said the following: “About the case of a man who was dragging his clothes behind him on the ground, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘I dislike one’s making himself look like a woman.’”
