    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى وَ غَيْرُهُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ الْعَقَرْقُوفِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ لِلرَّحِمِ أَرْبَعَةَ سُبُلٍ فِي أَيِّ سَبِيلٍ سَلَكَ فِيهِ الْمَاءُ كَانَ مِنْهُ الْوَلَدُ وَاحِدٌ وَ اثْنَانِ وَ ثَلَاثَةٌ وَ أَرْبَعَةٌ وَ لَا يَكُونُ إِلَى سَبِيلٍ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ وَاحِدٍ .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya and others have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from ’Isma‘il ibn ‘Umar from Shu’ayb al-‘Aqarqufiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The womb has four ways in whichever way the seed (water) finds the path thereof comes a child, one child, two children , three children or four children . In (through) one way only one child can come and no more/”

  2. 10295Al-Kafi

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ رَفَعَهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حُمْرَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ خَلَقَ لِلرَّحِمِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَوْعِيَةٍ فَمَا كَانَ فِي الْأَوَّلِ فَلِلْأَبِ وَ مَا كَانَ فِي الثَّانِي فَلِلْأُمِّ وَ مَا كَانَ فِي الثَّالِثِ فَلِلْعُمُومَةِ وَ مَا كَانَ فِي الرَّابِعِ فَلِلْخُئُولَةِ .

    2. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from in a marfu ‘ manner from Muhammad ibn Humran who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah has created four receptacles for the womb. Whatever is from the first is for the father, whatever is from the second is from the mother, whatever is from the third is from the paternal uncles and whatever is from the fourth is from the maternal uncles (in gender or shape).’”

  3. 10296Al-Kafi

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) إِذَا حَضَرَتْ وِلَادَةُ الْمَرْأَةِ قَالَ أَخْرِجُوا مَنْ فِي الْبَيْتِ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ لَا يَكُونُ أَوَّلَ نَاظِرٍ إِلَى عَوْرَةٍ .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from ibn Muskan from Jabir who has said the following: “At the time of the birth of a child, Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would say, ’Send all women out of the house; they must not be the first to look at the privacy [genitals].

  4. 10297Al-Kafi

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُرَازِمٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وُلِدَ لِي غُلَامٌ فَقَالَ رَزَقَكَ اللَّهُ شُكْرَ الْوَاهِبِ وَ بَارَكَ لَكَ فِي الْمَوْهُوبِ وَ بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَ رَزَقَكَ اللَّهُ بِرَّهُ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from his father from Muhammad ibn Sinan from al-Husayn from Murazim from his brother who has said the following: “A man once said to abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘A boy is born to me. 5 He (the Imam) said, ‘May Allah enable you to thank the Benefactor, bless you with the gift and make him to grow up to manhood! May Allah grant you the chance to enjoy his virtuous deeds!’”

  5. 10298Al-Kafi

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ الْأَحْمَرِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي بَرْزَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ قَالَ وُلِدَ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) مَوْلُودٌ فَأَتَتْهُ قُرَيْشٌ فَقَالُوا يَهْنِئُكَ الْفَارِسُ فَقَالَ وَ مَا هَذَا مِنَ الْكَلَامِ قُولُوا شَكَرْتَ الْوَاهِبَ وَ بُورِكَ لَكَ فِي الْمَوْهُوبِ وَ بَلَغَ اللَّهُ بِهِ أَشُدَّهُ وَ رَزَقَكَ بِرَّهُ .

    2. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ibrahim ibn Ishaq al-Ahmar from ‘Abd Allah ibn Hammad from abu Maryam al- Ansariy from abu Barzah al-Aslamiy who has said the following: “A child was born to al-Husayn ibn Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and Quraysh came to congratulate him (the Imam) and said, ‘Congratulations to you for the birth of the rider (the knight).’ He (the Imam) said, ‘What kind of expression is this! Say, “May Allah enable you to thank the Benefactor for the blessed gift, may Allah make him to grow up to manhood and may Allah give you the chance to enjoy his good deeds!”’

  6. 10299Al-Kafi

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ هَنَّأَ رَجُلٌ رَجُلًا أَصَابَ ابْناً فَقَالَ يَهْنِئُكَ الْفَارِسُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْحَسَنُ ( عليه السلام ) مَا عِلْمُكَ يَكُونُ فَارِساً أَوْ رَاجِلًا قَالَ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَمَا أَقُولُ قَالَ تَقُولُ شَكَرْتَ الْوَاهِبَ وَ بُورِكَ لَكَ فِي الْمَوْهُوبِ وَ بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَ رَزَقَكَ بِرَّهُ .

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Bakr ibn Salih from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Once a man congratulated another man saying, ‘Congratulation for the birth of the rider (the knight).’ Al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘How would you know if he will be a rider or walking on foot?’ He asked, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what I should say?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Say, “May Allah enable you to thank the Benefactor. May the gift be a blessing for you and may Allah make him to grow up to manhood! May Allah give you the chance to enjoy his good deeds.’””

  7. 10300Al-Kafi

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ قَدْ سَمَّاهُ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَصْدَقُ الْأَسْمَاءِ مَا سُمِّيَ بِالْعُبُودِيَّةِ وَ أَفْضَلُهَا أَسْمَاءُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Faddal from abu Ishaq, Tha’labah ibn Maymun from a man whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, The truest name is that which expresses one’s slavery to (Allah) and the best of them are names of the Prophets.’”

  8. 10301Al-Kafi

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ جَدِّي قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) سَمُّوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُولَدُوا فَإِنْ لَمْ تَدْرُوا أَ ذَكَرٌ أَمْ أُنْثَى فَسَمُّوهُمْ بِالْأَسْمَاءِ الَّتِي تَكُونُ لِلذَّكَرِ وَ الْأُنْثَى فَإِنَّ أَسْقَاطَكُمْ إِذَا لَقُوكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ لَمْ تُسَمُّوهُمْ يَقُولُ السِّقْطُ لِأَبِيهِ أَلَّا سَمَّيْتَنِي وَ قَدْ سَمَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مُحَسِّناً قَبْلَ أَنْ يُولَدَ .

    2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘My father narrated to me from my grandfather that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Name your children before they are born: and if you do not know they are male or female, then name them with such names that are good for both male and female. In case a child is miscarried, when that child will meet you on the Day of Judgment, whom you had not given a name, it will say to his father, ‘I wish you had named me.’ The Messenger of Allah had named Muhsin before his birth.’”*

  9. 10302Al-Kafi

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفُضَيْلِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَوَّلُ مَا يَبَرُّ الرَّجُلُ وَلَدَهُ أَنْ يُسَمِّيَهُ بِاسْمٍ حَسَنٍ فَلْيُحْسِنْ أَحَدُكُمُ اسْمَ وَلَدِهِ .

    3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn Ali from Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl from Musa ibn Bakr who has said the following: “The first good thing that a father can do to his children is to give them good names. You must find a good name for (each of) your children.’”

  10. 10303Al-Kafi

    أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا يُولَدُ لَنَا وَلَدٌ إِلَّا سَمَّيْنَاهُ مُحَمَّداً فَإِذَا مَضَى لَنَا سَبْعَةُ أَيَّامٍ فَإِنْ شِئْنَا غَيَّرْنَا وَ إِنْ شِئْنَا تَرَكْنَا .

    4. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from certain persons of our people from those whom he has mentioned who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘We name every child born to us Muhammad and after seven days if we like we change or keep the same name.’”

  11. 10304Al-Kafi

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنِ ابْنِ مَيَّاحٍ عَنْ فُلَانِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ شَاوَرَهُ فِي اسْمِ وَلَدِهِ فَقَالَ سَمِّهِ بِأَسْمَاءٍ مِنَ الْعُبُودِيَّةِ فَقَالَ أَيُّ الْأَسْمَاءِ هُوَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ .

    5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-FIakam from ibn Mayyah from Fulan ibn Flamid ibn Flamid who has said the following: “I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, for advice about the name of my child and he (the Imam) said, ‘Name him with the names that express slavery (to Allah).’ He then asked, ‘Which ones are they?’ He (the Imam) said, “Abd al-Rahman.’”

  12. 10305Al-Kafi

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ عَمِّهِ عَاصِمٍ الْكُوزِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) قَالَ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ أَرْبَعَةُ أَوْلَادٍ لَمْ يُسَمِّ أَحَدَهُمْ بِاسْمِي فَقَدْ جَفَانِي .

    6. Al-FIusayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Sulayman ibn Sama‘ah from his uncle ‘Asem al-Kuziy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If four sons are born to someone and he does not name even one of them with my name he has done injustice to me.’”

  13. 10306Al-Kafi

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَزْرَمِيِّ قَالَ اسْتَعْمَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ مَرْوَانَ بْنَ الْحَكَمِ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَ أَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَفْرِضَ لِشَباب قُرَيْشٍ فَفَرَضَ لَهُمْ فَقَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ مَا اسْمُكَ فَقُلْتُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ فَقَالَ مَا اسْمُ أَخِيكَ فَقُلْتُ عَلِيٌّ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ وَ عَلِيٌّ مَا يُرِيدُ أَبُوكَ أَنْ يَدَعَ أَحَداً مِنْ وُلْدِهِ إِلَّا سَمَّاهُ عَلِيّاًثُمَّ فَرَضَ لِي فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى أَبِي فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ وَيْلِي عَلَى ابْنِ الزَّرْقَاءِ دَبَّاغَةِ الْأَدَمِ لَوْ وُلِدَ لِي مِائَةٌ لَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ لَا أُسَمِّيَ أَحَداً مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا عَلِيّاً .

    7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad formal-Barqiy from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-‘Arzamiy who has said the following: “Mu‘awiyah appointed Marwan ibn al-Hakam as his agent in al-Madinah and ordered him to pay a certain salary to the young people of Quraysh which he did. Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘I went to him and he asked, ‘What is your name?’ I replied, ‘It is Ali ibn al-Husayn.’ He then asked, ‘What is the name of your brother?’ I replied, ‘It is Ali.’ He said, ‘Ali and Ali. Is it that your father does not want to leave any of his children without naming them all Ali?’ He paid me a certain amount. I returned to my father and informed him of what had happened. He (the Imam) said, ‘Woe is upon the son of al-Zarqa’, the leather- treating man. Even if one hundred sons will be born to me I will not give anyone of them any other name except Ali.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْفَقْرُ بَيْتاً فِيهِ اسْمُ مُحَمَّدٍ أَوْ أَحْمَدَ أَوْ عَلِيٍّ أَوِ الْحَسَنِ أَوِ الْحُسَيْنِ أَوْ جَعْفَرٍ أَوْ طَالِبٍ أَوْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَوْ فَاطِمَةَ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ.

    8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Bakr ibn Salih from Sulayman al-Ja‘fariy who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Poverty does not enter a house wherein a person’s name is Muhammad or Ahmad or Ali or al-Hassan or al-Husayn or Ja‘far or Talib or ‘Abd Allah or Fatimah of the women.’”

  15. 10308Al-Kafi

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وُلِدَ لِي غُلَامٌ فَمَا ذَا أُسَمِّيهِ قَالَ سَمِّهِ بِأَحَبِّ الْأَسْمَاءِ إِلَيَّ حَمْزَةَ .

    9. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once a man came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, a son is born to me. What must I name him?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Name him with the name which is most beloved to Hamzah.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) اسْتَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ فَإِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قُمْ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانٍ إِلَى نُورِكَ وَ قُمْ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانٍ لَا نُورَ لَكَ .

    10. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Husayn ibn Zayd ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn from his father who has said the following: “This is a narration of abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, from the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. He (the Messenger of Allah) has said, ‘You should give yourselves good names; on the Day of Judgment you will be called with your names: O so and so son of so and so, stand up to your light and stand up, O so and so son of so and so, you have no light.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ عَنْ مَعْمَرِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) مَا تُكَنَّى قَالَ قُلْتُ مَا اكْتَنَيْتُ بَعْدُ وَ مَا لِي مِنْ وَلَدٍ وَ لَا امْرَأَةٍ وَ لَا جَارِيَةٍ قَالَ فَمَا يَمْنَعُكَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ حَدِيثٌ بَلَغَنَا عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ وَ مَا هُوَ قُلْتُ بَلَغَنَا عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنِ اكْتَنَى وَ لَيْسَ لَهُ أَهْلٌ فَهُوَ أَبُو جَعْرٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) شَوْهٌ لَيْسَ هَذَا مِنْ حَدِيثِ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّا لَنُكَنِّي أَوْلَادَنَا فِي صِغَرِهِمْ مَخَافَةَ النَّبَزِ أَنْ يَلْحَقَ بِهِمْ .

    11. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Salih al-Sindiy from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from Sa‘id ibn Khuthaym from Mu’ammar ibn Khuthaym who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once asked me, ‘What is your Kunyah (father of so and so or son of so and so)?’ I replied, ‘I have no Kunyah yet; I have no son or wife or daughter.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What keeps you from having one?’ I replied, ‘It is a Hadith which is narrated from Ali, ‘Alayhi al- Salam. ’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is it?’ I replied, ‘Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, “If one adopts a Kunyah and he does not have a wife he then is father of al-Ja‘r (dried up dung).”’ Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said that it is forged and it is not of Hadith of Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. We give Kunyah to our children in their childhood for fear of bad names being ascribed to them.’”

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ نَصْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شِمْرٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ أَرَادَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) الرُّكُوبَ إِلَى بَعْضِ شِيعَتِهِ لِيَعُودَهُ فَقَالَ يَا جَابِرُ الْحَقْنِي فَتَبِعْتُهُ فَلَمَّا انْتَهَى إِلَى بَابِ الدَّارِ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا ابْنٌ لَهُ صَغِيرٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) مَا اسْمُكَ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ قَالَ فَبِمَا تُكَنَّى قَالَ بِعَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) لَقَدِ احْتَظَرْتَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ احْتِظَاراً شَدِيداً إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ إِذَا سَمِعَ مُنَادِياً يُنَادِي يَا مُحَمَّدُ يَا عَلِيُّ ذَابَ كَمَا يَذُوبُ الرَّصَاصُ حَتَّى إِذَا سَمِعَ مُنَادِياً يُنَادِي بِاسْمِ عَدُوٍّ مِنْ أَعْدَائِنَا اهْتَزَّ وَ اخْتَالَ .

    12. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Muslim from al-Husayn ibn Nasr from his father from ‘Amr ibn Shamir from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once wanted to visit one of his followers because he was ill. He (the Imam) told me to follow him and I followed him (the Imam). When he (the Imam) arrived at his door his small son came out and abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, asked, ‘What is your name?’ He replied, ‘It is Muhammad.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is your Kunyah ?’ He replied, ‘It is Ali.’ Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘You have fortified yourself against Satan very intensely. When Satan hears someone calling O Muhammad, O Ali, Satan melts like lead until he hears someone calling with the names of our enemies; he becomes excited and swaggers.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ صَفْوَانَ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ أَوْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ هَذَا مُحَمَّدٌ أُذِنَ لَهُمْ فِي التَّسْمِيَةِ بِهِ فَمَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُمْ فِي يس يَعْنِي التَّسْمِيَةَ وَ هُوَ اسْمُ النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ).

    13. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Safwan ibn in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, or abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘This is ‘Muhammad’ (the Messenger of Allah) who has given them permission to name themselves with his name. However, who has given them permission to name themselves ‘Yasin’ which is the name of the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause )?’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) دَعَا بِصَحِيفَةٍ حِينَ حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَنْهَى عَنْ أَسْمَاءٍ يُتَسَمَّى بِهَا فَقُبِضَ وَ لَمْ يُسَمِّهَا مِنْهَا الْحَكَمُ وَ حَكِيمٌ وَ خَالِدٌ وَ مَالِكٌ وَ ذَكَرَ أَنَّهَا سِتَّةٌ أَوْ سَبْعَةٌ مِمَّا لَا يَجُوزُ أَنْ يُتَسَمَّى بِهَا .

    14. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah asked for a sahifah (a book) and he (the Messenger of Allah) wanted to prohibit the use of certain names to use. He (the Messenger of Allah) passed away but he (the Messenger of Allah) did not mention them. Of such names are al- Hakam and Hakim, Khalid and Malik. He (the Imam) said that such names are six or seven and it is not permissible to use them.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) نَهَى عَنْ أَرْبَعِ كُنًى عَنْ أَبِي عِيسَى وَ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَكَمِ وَ عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ وَ عَنْ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ إِذَا كَانَ الِاسْمُ مُحَمَّداً .

    15. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited four Kunyah like abu ‘Isa, abu al-Hakam, abu Malik, abu al-Qasim if the name is Muhammad.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ أَبْغَضَ الْأَسْمَاءِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ حَارِثٌ وَ مَالِكٌ وَ خَالِدٌ .

    16. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Hilal from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The most hated names to Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, are Harith, Malik and Khalid.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ إِنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ يَغْشَى عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ كَانَ يُكَنَّى أَبَا مُرَّةَ فَكَانَ إِذَا اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَيْهِ يَقُولُ أَبُو مُرَّةَ بِالْبَابِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) بِاللَّهِ إِذَا جِئْتَ إِلَى بَابِنَا فَلَا تَقُولَنَّ أَبُو مُرَّةَ .

    17. Muhammad ibn al-Husayn has narrated from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from ibn Bukayr from Zurarah who has said the following: “I once heard abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘A man would come to Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and his Kunyah was abu Murrah. When asking for permission at the door he would say, ‘This is abu Murrah at the door.’ Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said to him, ‘I swear you to Allah that when you come to our door do not say, ‘This is abu Murrah at the door (it is Kunyah of Satan).”’

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَمَّنْ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) إِذَا بُشِّرَ بِالْوَلَدِ لَمْ يَسْأَلْ أَ ذَكَرٌ هُوَ أَمْ أُنْثَى حَتَّى يَقُولَ أَ سَوِيٌّ فَإِنْ كَانَ سَوِيّاً قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي لَمْ يَخْلُقْ مِنِّي شَيْئاً مُشَوَّهاً .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from certain persons of our people from Muhammad ibn Sinan from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘When one receives the news of the birth of his child one must not ask, “Is it a boy or a girl?’ One must ask, ‘Is it of complete physical condition?’ If the child is of complete physical condition one must say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah who has not created from me a defective child.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ شُرَحْبِيلَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي الْمَرْأَةِ الْحَامِلِ تَأْكُلُ السَّفَرْجَلَ فَإِنَّ الْوَلَدَ يَكُونُ أَطْيَبَ رِيحاً وَ أَصْفَى لَوْناً .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Salmah ibn al-Khattab from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Abd al- Rahman from Sharahbil ibn Muslim who has said the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘A pregnant woman should eat quince because the child grows up of fine smell and clear color.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ التَّيْمُلِيِّ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ هَاشِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْخَزَّازِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ نَظَرَ إِلَى غُلَامٍ جَمِيلٍ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ أَبُو هَذَا الْغُلَامِ آكِلَ السَّفَرْجَلِ .

    2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hassan al-Taymuliy, from al-Husayn ibn Hashim from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, while looking at a beautiful boy said, ‘It seems the father of this boy had been eating quince.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) خَيْرُ تُمُورِكُمُ الْبَرْنِيُّ فَأَطْعِمُوهُ نِسَاءَكُمْ فِي نِفَاسِهِنَّ تَخْرُجْ أَوْلَادُكُمْ زَكِيّاً حَلِيماً .

    3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Hassan from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The best of your dates are al-Barniy, feed them to your women during their childbirth; your children will grow up intelligent and forbearing.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عِدَّةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ عَمِّهِ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ سَالِمٍ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لِيَكُنْ أَوَّلُ مَا تَأْكُلُ النُّفَسَاءُ الرُّطَبَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ لِمَرْيَمَ وَ هُزِّي إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ تُساقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَباً جَنِيًّاقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَوَانُ الرُّطَبِ قَالَ سَبْعَ تَمَرَاتٍ مِنْ تَمْرِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَسَبْعَ تَمَرَاتٍ مِنْ تَمْرِ أَمْصَارِكُمْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ وَ عِزَّتِي وَ جَلَالِي وَ عَظَمَتِي وَ ارْتِفَاعِ مَكَانِي لَا تَأْكُلُ نُفَسَاءُ يَوْمَ تَلِدُ الرُّطَبَ فَيَكُونُ غُلَاماً إِلَّا كَانَ حَلِيماً وَ إِنْ كَانَتْ جَارِيَةً كَانَتْ حَلِيمَةً .

    4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from A number of his people from Ali ibn Asbat from his uncle Ya‘qub ibn Salim in a marfu‘ manner from ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The first thing that women should eat is fresh dates; Allah, most High, said to Maryam, ‘. . . shake the twig of the palm tree; fresh dates will fall on you to be picked up.’ (19:24) It then was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what happens if it is not the season of fresh dates?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘If this is not available then it is seven pieces of dates of the dates of al-Madinah, and if that is not available then seven pieces of dates of the dates of other cities. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, “I swear by My majesty, Glory, greatness and the height of My place that if a woman during her childbirth eats fresh dates, her child, a boy or girl, will grow up forbearing and tolerant.’””

    عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الشَّامِيِّ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ أَطْعِمُوا الْبَرْنِيَّ نِسَاءَكُمْ فِي نِفَاسِهِنَّ تَحْلُمْ أَوْلَادُكُمْ .

    5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from abu Sa‘id (walking faster like running slowly)’d al-Shamiy from Salih ibn ‘Uqbah who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Feed your women with al-Barniy (dates) during their childbirth; your children will grow up forbearing.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَبِيصَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ النَّيْسَابُورِيِّ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى عَنْ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ الشَّامِيِّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) أَطْعِمُوا حَبَالَاكُمُ اللُّبَانَ فَإِنَّ الصَّبِيَّ إِذَا غُذِّيَ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ بِاللُّبَانِ اشْتَدَّ قَلْبُهُ وَ زِيدَ فِي عَقْلِهِ فَإِنْ يَكُ ذَكَراً كَانَ شُجَاعاً وَ إِنْ وُلِدَتْ أُنْثَى عَظُمَتْ عَجِيزَتُهَا فَتَحْظَى بِذَلِكَ عِنْدَ زَوْجِهَا .

    6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Muhammad ibn Qabisah from ‘Abd Allah al-Naysaburiy from Harun ibn Muslim from abu Musa from abu al-‘Ala’ al-Shamiy from Sufyan al-Thawriy from abu Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Feed your women, during their pregnancy, frankincense; if a child receives frankincense for nourishment in the mother’s womb it strengthens the heart of the child and increases the reasoning power of the child. If the child is a male he grows up brave and if the child is female her posterior will grow large which is favorable to her husband.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَطْعِمُوا حَبَالَاكُمْ ذَكَرَ اللُّبَانِ فَإِنْ يَكُ فِي بَطْنِهَا غُلَامٌ خَرَجَ ذَكِيَّ الْقَلْبِ عَالِماً شُجَاعاً وَ إِنْ تَكُ جَارِيَةٌ حَسُنَ خَلْقُهَا وَ خُلُقُهَا وَ عَظُمَتْ عَجِيزَتُهَا وَ حَظِيَتْ عِنْدَ زَوْجِهَا .

    7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn Ali from Muhammad ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘You should feed male frankincense to your pregnant women; if the child in her womb is a male he will grow up of intelligent heart, learned and brave; and if the child is female she will grow up of good moral behavior (beautiful) and of large posterior which will be favorable to her husband.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْمَاعِيلَ الصَّيْقَلِ عَنْ أَبِي يَحْيَى الرَّازِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِذَا وُلِدَ لَكُمُ الْمَوْلُودُ أَيَّ شَيْ‏ءٍ تَصْنَعُونَ بِهِ قُلْتُ لَا أَدْرِي مَا نَصْنَعُ بِهِ قَالَ خُذْ عَدَسَةَ جَاوَشِيرَ فَدُفْهُ بِمَاءٍ ثُمَّ قَطِّرْ فِي أَنْفِهِ فِي الْمَنْخِرِ الْأَيْمَنِ قَطْرَتَيْنِ وَ فِي الْأَيْسَرِ قَطْرَةً وَاحِدَةً وَ أَذِّنْ فِي أُذُنِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَ أَقِمْ فِي الْيُسْرَى تَفْعَلُ بِهِ ذَلِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُقْطَعَ سُرَّتُهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَفْزَعُ أَبَداً وَ لَا تُصِيبُهُ أُمُّ الصِّبْيَانِ .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from abu ’Isma‘il al-Sayqal from abu Yahya al- Raziy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once asked, ‘When a child is born what do you do for the child?’ I replied, ‘I do not know what we should do.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Take Jawshir [Persian Arabicized word for cow milk] of the size of a lentil and warm it up with water then drop it in the nostrils of the child; two drops in the right and one drop in the left; say Adhan in the right ear and Iqamah in the left ear. You should do it before cutting off the umbilical cord. This protects the child against shock and seizure.’”

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ حَفْصٍ الْكُنَاسِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مُرُوا الْقَابِلَةَ أَوْ بَعْضَ مَنْ يَلِيهِ أَنْ تُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةَ فِي أُذُنِهِ الْيُمْنَى فَلَا يُصِيبَهُ لَمَمٌ وَ لَا تَابِعَةٌ أَبَداً .

    2. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Aban from Hafs al-Kunasiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Instruct the doctor or someone involved to say Salat (prayer) in the right ear of the child to protect the child against the effect of insanity or the Jinn that follows human beings.’”

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مَرَّارٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ يُحَنَّكُ الْمَوْلُودُ بِمَاءِ الْفُرَاتِ وَ يُقَامُ فِي أُذُنِهِ .

    3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ’Isma‘il ibn Marrar from Yunus from certain persons of his people who have said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Drops of water from Euphrates or water from the sky should be dropped in the newborn’s mouth and Iqamah should be said in his ear.’”

    وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى حَنِّكُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ بِمَاءِ الْفُرَاتِ وَ بِتُرْبَةِ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَبِمَاءِ السَّمَاءِ .

    4. In another Hadith it is said: ‘You should drop water from Euphrates and soil from the grave of al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, or water from the sky in the mouth of your newborn ones.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) حَنِّكُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ بِالتَّمْرِ هَكَذَا فَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) بِالْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) .

    5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Feed your newborn children dates because the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, did so with al-Hassan and al- Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam.”’

    عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ مَوْلُودٌ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ فِي أُذُنِهِ الْيُمْنَى بِأَذَانِ الصَّلَاةِ وَ لْيُقِمْ فِي الْيُسْرَى فَإِنَّهَا عِصْمَةٌ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ .

    6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘One must say Adhan for Salat (prayer) in the right ear of a newborn child and Iqamah in the left ear to protect the child from Satan, condemned to be stoned.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنِ الْعَبْدِ الصَّالِحِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْعَقِيقَةُ وَاجِبَةٌ إِذَا وُلِدَ لِلرَّجُلِ وَلَدٌ فَإِنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُسَمِّيَهُ مِنْ يَوْمِهِ فَعَلَ .

    1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from the virtuous servant (of Allah), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “He (the virtuous servant of Allah, the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘ ‘Aqiqah is obligatory when a child is born to one, and if he likes to give him a name on that day he can do so.’”

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَائِذٍ عَنْ أَبِي خَدِيجَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كُلُّ مَوْلُودٍ مُرْتَهَنٌ بِالْعَقِيقَةِ .

    2. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from al-Washsha’ from Ahmad ibn ‘ A’idh from abu Khadijah who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Every newborn child is safeguarded with ‘Aqiqah.’”

    مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ سَعْدَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ مَا أَدْرِي كَانَ أَبِي عَقَّ عَنِّي أَمْ لَا قَالَ فَأَمَرَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَعَقَقْتُ عَنْ نَفْسِي وَ أَنَا شَيْخٌوَ قَالَ عُمَرُ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مُرْتَهَنٌ بِعَقِيقَتِهِ وَ الْعَقِيقَةُ أَوْجَبُ مِنَ الْأُضْحِيَّةِ .

    3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Musa ibn Sa‘dan from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Qasim from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan from ‘Umar ibn Yazid who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I by Allah do not know if my father had made ‘Aqiqah for me or not.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, commanded me and I made ‘Aqiqah for myself when I was an old man.’ ‘Umar has said, ‘I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, “Every man is safeguarded with his ‘Aqiqah and ‘Aqiqah is more urgently needed than Adhiyah (sacrifice animal).’””

    4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from ’Ammar ibn Musa al-Sabatiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Every newborn is safeguarded with ‘Aqiqah.’”

    5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ’Isma‘il ibn Marrar from Yunus from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about ‘ Aqiqah : if it is obligatory or not. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is obligatory.’”

    أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَجَاءَهُ رَسُولُ عَمِّهِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَقُولُ لَكَ عَمُّكَ إِنَّا طَلَبْنَا الْعَقِيقَةَ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهَا فَمَا تَرَى نَتَصَدَّقُ بِثَمَنِهَا فَقَالَ لَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ إِطْعَامَ الطَّعَامِ وَ إِرَاقَةَ الدِّمَاءِ .

    6. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when a messenger from his uncle came and said, ‘Your uncle says, “We tried to find ‘Aqiqah but could not find one. Do you think our giving its price in charity is sufficient?”’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, Allah loves feeding of food and slaughtering animals (to feeding the needy).”’

    عَلِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مَرَّارٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ وَ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ جَمِيعاً عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْخَزَّازِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ وُلِدَ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) غُلَامَانِ جَمِيعاً فَأَمَرَ زَيْدَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ أَنْ يَشْتَرِيَ لَهُ جَزُورَيْنِ لِلْعَقِيقَةِ وَ كَانَ زَمَنُ غَلَاءٍ فَاشْتَرَى لَهُ وَاحِدَةً وَ عَسُرَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْأُخْرَى فَقَالَ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَدْ عَسُرَتْ عَلَيَّ الْأُخْرَى فَتَصَدَّقْ بِثَمَنِهَا فَقَالَ لَا اطْلُبْهَا حَتَّى تَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهَا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يُحِبُّ إِهْرَاقَ الدِّمَاءِ وَ إِطْعَامَ الطَّعَامِ .

    8. Ali has narrated from father from ’Isma‘il ibn Marrar from Yunus and ibn abu ‘Umayr all from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Two sons at the same time were born to abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. He (the Imam) instructed Zayd ibn Ali to buy two fat healthy sheep (or camels) for ‘Aqiqah. At that time prices were high. He bought one and buying another became difficult. He said to abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Buying another is difficult, so you should give its price in charity.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘I will not seek to find one until it becomes possible for you; Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, loves slaughtering of animals to feed the needy.”’

    الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ مُعَاذٍ الْفَرَّاءِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْغُلَامُ رَهْنٌ بِسَابِعِهِ بِكَبْشٍ يُسَمَّى فِيهِ وَ يُعَقُّ عَنْهُوَ قَالَ إِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ ( عليها السلام ) حَلَقَتْ ابْنَيْهَا وَ تَصَدَّقَتْ بِوَزْنِ شَعْرِهِمَا فِضَّةً .

    9. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from ‘ Abd Allah ibn Sinan from Mu’adh al-farra’ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The boy is safeguarded on the seventh day from his birth with giving him a name and slaughtering of a ram for ‘Aqiqah.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Fatimah ‘Alayha al-Salam, shaved (the heads) of her two sons and gave in charity of silver by the weight of their hair.’”

    عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ فَقَالَ فِي الذَّكَرِ وَ الْأُنْثَى سَوَاءٌ .

    1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about ‘Aqiqah and he (the Imam) said, ‘It is the same for both male and female.”’

    أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ جَمِيعاً عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ حَازِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْعَقِيقَةُ فِي الْغُلَامِ وَ الْجَارِيَةِ سَوَاءٌ .

    2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all Safwan from Mansur ibn Hazim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘ ‘Aqiqah for boys and girls is the same.’”

    3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ’Isma‘il ibn Marrar Yunus from ibn Muskan who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about ‘Aqiqah and he (the Imam) said, ‘ ‘Aqiqah for a boy and a girl is the same, one ram for this and one ram for this.’”
